If you're an 18-55yo man interested in using fasting to cut hunger in half and lose up to 7lbs of fat a month, I made this for you: bit.ly/FastToLast How many of you guys have been fasting? I didn't include too much of my personal experience this time around, but during my 5 day fast I either had lower libido or I was too exhausted from walking constantly to think about sex, but after refeeding my libido was definitely higher than normal
I've been doing daily 20 hr fasting and 4 hr feeding windows, but been eating whatever I want during the 4 hours. Losing about 3lbs a week. I'm going to incorporate more protien though instead of carbs. How does this apply to intermittent fasting I wonder 🤨
Note: One thing that I have always liked about your presentations is the absence of religiosity. Science is not an absolute... like dah. Every time that I have water fasted was while I have been celibate. I noticed no libido change for having no reference I am assuming... and only yucky relationships (that I allowed) before hand. You will have to ask this question later on, for when I did get into a relationship anew... I will have to test that.
Definitely feel amazing after fasting and then breaking it with a protein focused meal, as well as strength training 💪🔥 At age 36 I'm at my fittest ever 😊
I remember a Canadian doctor assisting an aboriginal community in BC suffering from obesity having them prescribed a low-carb diet over a period of time to control their insulin levels. Turns out he was able to restore proper hormone and blood levels with a significant weight loss, and patients with mild diabetes were cured improving their lifestyle.
Low carb diet is a incredibly healthy diet. Dr.Bernstein, a type 1 diabetic and doctor that specializes in diabetes, advises it to all his patients to control blood sugar levels.
The benefits are from the reduced energy in take. When total calories and protein are equated, the randomised controlled human trails shows the ratio of carbs and fat are irrelevant on biomarkers. When I've done low carb vs high carb, and kept protein and calories the same, I notice ZERO difference in fat loss biomarkers taken by blood.

I started doing intermittent fasting (IF) two years ago, weighted 212 lbs. In six months acheived my goal of 160 lbs. My testosterone (T) levels before IF were always bothering me, usually between 230-280 ng/dl. That is borderline low T for men my age (38). After two years of doing IF daily, plus 3 day fasts every 3 months, I'm now at 637 ng/dl, well into the normal range of T levels, also boasting many of the health benefits it also provides to my hormones and body in general. This works!❤ July 2024: and to add that after 9 years trying to conceive a child (have zero sperm count for years), finally glad to say that I could get my soldiers back online and got my wife pregnant!!!
@@d1ssolv3r Hello! I do a 17:7 fasting period. I eat between 12pm and 7pm. Normally, I eat for lunch anything I want, and for dinner I do keto (protein, fiber, fat-zero or low carb)
The one thing I want to know that didn't seem to be mentioned in the video, unless I'm mistaken, was, how long do the heightened test levels last? Does it drop back down after a few days rapidly? Or gradually return to the pre-fast levels? Could there hypothetically be a way to do a fast cycle go increase your over all testosterone levels, or would the benefits be negligible, specifically from a training standpoint.
Levels remained elevated for a while due to sensitivity to GNRH. I may have dropped a tiny bit a while after, but provided that food intake remained the same, T levels were at least as high as before the fast.
Testosterone levels were indistinguishable one week after refeeding, based on the study cited at 3:44. Probably not mentioned because it does undermine the impressiveness of the results. (Source: Endocrine markers of semistarvation in healthy lean men in a multistressor environment, Friedel et al.)
Fasting 16/8 seven days a week is what works for me, a life-changer in fact. Will move to 20/4 when I feel ready. My focus is on the sustainable long run, no extreme changes overnight.
@@opita_opica 16-hour fasting, then whatever I eat is strictly within the remaining 8 hours. Done 18/6 today and survived fine, looks like my body's taking it well. Trying to be careful though and do it gradually, one never knows... It's great, very empowering. Enjoy!
Your body does not need or want testosterone when it's starving because it's a GROWTH hormone but when you start eating again it needs the testosterone to start growing again.
This reminds me of the “hard times -> strong men -> easy times -> weak men repeat.” Fasting creates strong men, eating constantly makes weak men quite literally. It makes absolute sense, because animals aren’t mean to live easy lives, they are meant to take on hell and come back stronger. Same with damaging your muscles to build them back. We are absolutely astounding things, and we are meant to take on absolutely astounding biological stress, not stress in an office cubical.
from what ive read it seems the current science on the topic is not that you have to "damage your muscles to build them back" but rather stressing the muscles, by pushing them near their limit for a prolonged period, that signals the body to strengthen them. you dont have to feel sore to gain muscle, (an indicator of muscle damage) but if you feel sore you probably pushed yourself harder, for longer, and so the gains will likely be bigger.

Ramadan is definitely NOT fasting, it's just moving all your food to outside of daylight hours. The endocrine changes occur when you have NO food for 3 or more days, think of it as a period of starvation, mimicking not being able to have access to any food as if you were on a prolonged hunt in the wild.
I always noted that fasting was the biggest factor in allowing me to bulk up, not force-feeding myself, but depriving myself and then watching my appetite become insatiable in the refeeding stage. Best way to put on weight if skinny is to counterintuitively start by fasting.
Exactly. Nowhere near long enough to counter the loss of test from dieting. If it did you would see natural bodybuilders whose entire career is based around maximizing test doing it. They don't. They bulk and cut at a small calorie deficit.
@@AndyTomlins What works for bodybuilders doesnt necessarily apply to "normal" people, their goal is different to some extent. If you call yourself a bodybuilder, that means you are willing to devote a lot of your time for maximal effects, for the day of the competition. Most people just want to be lean, somewhat stronger with the minimal amount of time, effort and attention. Im not convinced that high testosterone for like 3 days is massively better than 5 days, biology is more complicated than that. A hormonal spike serves as a signal anyways. Also growth hormone is increased WHILE fasting and drops when refeeding as far as i know. Check out Martin Berkhan, he is the pope of intermittent fasting. He is ripped AF and deadlifts like 600 pounds.
@@AndyTomlins Bodybuilders don't matter, exogenous testosterone basically puts all these 'tactics' to shame, anyone who injects will have far higher testosterone than somebody who maxises every single part of their life
I'm sure our ancestors starved regularly, not by choice mind you, more likely availability due to scarcity or weather. Fasting is an inbuilt biological mechanism to ensure our survival. Even on a day to day basis, go out hunting all day... one big meal at the end of the day; if all goes to plan. If not, fasting to the rescue! (For a while, anyhow lol) 🙌🙏💯
I just started fasting about 3 months ago and lost 40 pounds already. I went from 210 to 175 and felt 10x better. I was obese even though I didn't look obese. I felt tired and terrible all the time but now I'm moving constantly with way more energy
You must have a lot to say about your fast. So much thought leads up to taking on a fast and preparation. Then there's all the introspective thoughts you have while fasting.
I've practiced prolonged fasting for over 3 years now and I've kept making tremendous gains during this time. My testosterone was 894 ng/dl when I tested it almost 2 years ago and my muscle mass and habits have only gotten better since then so I suspect it's higher now. It's also made cutting very easy and reversed any sort of food addiction I ever had. I literally never crave junk food as whole foods taste amazing to me now and I can go very long without every feeling starved even when quite lean. What I've suspected and seems to be true anecdotally is that it boosts hormones and ability to put on muscle mass in the long term.
i agree with you...i dont like vegetable at all but after doing intermitten fasting..i found vegies to be quit delicious..being free of junk foods for 4 year now
I have recently statrted intermittent fasting. A 3 day series of 18:6. It has made a huge impact on "resetting" my gut/body. I am going to continue this every 4-6 weeks and see how things go!😀
@hasanraza7922 I have found that doing an intermittent fast keeps my body in a lean state. I exercise daily and when fasting I don't go as hard. I have found that doing this periodically it helps with overall maintenance! It works for me! Have a powerful day!💪
From an evolutionary standpoint it makes sense to have lower testosterone levels when on a fast. We (used to) hunt prey for long periods of time. Once its succesful we sitdown and eat, meaning we have nourishment, security and a social gathering. That is the perfect time to initate mating rituals and sleep before heading to the next long hunt again. Getting horny while chasing a giant Mamooth might not be very helpful ^^
does not make sense from that view. Testosterone is directly related to aggressiveness, risk-taking, fighting and thus also hunting down animals. if you have low T you do also have low energy and a lot of self-doubt and the feeling of insecurity. No way you can take down a mamooth while having low T. Id say it is the other way around. Your T decreases when you're in a comfort zone.
Also you're forgetting about the gathering part of the hunter-gatherer lifestyle. People in those societies/times ate tubers, nuts, leaves, fruit, honey, and mushrooms, as well. Plus fish which is a lot easier to catch. The hunters would not have been hunting on an empty stomach. If they were, that would mean they are already in dire straits.
@@floridaman318 I would assume that the genetic connection to this phenomenon is stuck with the prehistoric version of us (similiar to other mamals like lions etc.) before we started practicing gathering in addition to hunting. Not enough time passed for evolution to kick in and change the genetic connection (or just wasnt adventagous)
I don't think this will work for me. I have almost no fat as it is and can see my rib cage so my body will just eat my muscles. Did I miss something here? The tiny sample size research and your personal data in no way suggest that fasting has a long term or even medium term effect on testosterone levels. So you get a reflex reaction when the negative feedback loop is more sensitive to feeding and a temporary spike in IGF and free test. So what? If it made your testosterone levels significantly higher a month later it would be something worth making a snazzy RU-vid video about. A few days of higher levels isn't going to change anything except give you a boosted protein synthesis to repair all the tissue you catablolized during the fast. The amount of sciency sounding information that supports any health benefits of fasting is zero.
I tried 21 days using water and multivitamins only; I'm used to 7 day fasts every 3 months, yet I was curious to see what would happen. I could have continued but I didn't see any purpose. Given the state of the world today, it might be to everyone's advantage to learn how to suppress hunger.
I did a 33 day water fast (with electrolytes) a few years back. It was actually really easy state the third day. I was very careful refeeding. I had a few spoonfuls of bone broth hours before eating anything.
Yep, the best part is when you can look at stuff like sweets and carb heavy foods yet have zero urge to eat any of it. Not NEEDING to eat is so liberating, like breaking free of a cage you didn't know existed.

As Muslims , we fast from sunrise to sunset everyday for a month, it's called Ramadan, there's lots of benefits doing that but this year I noticed some big changes : -my face became healthy and (shiny) , I used to have acne but now it's clear. -I developed facial hair, which made me look more masculine. -my mental health improved, I became less moody ... It's been one week since Ramadan started,I can't wait to see more results, I hope you learn more about this Holy month .
Assalaam alaikum, masha'allah beautifully explained brother may Allah grant you the greatest of deeds and benefits in both this life and Jannah insha'allah
We muslims fast 1 month in a year that is now the month of ramadan. Wr fast from just before sunrise to sunset and that is very beneficial as we know now Science proves it. What you are saying is starvation...if you have fast for 5 days without eating anything in between.. obviously that would have negative effect.
I love your videos because they help people put their health back into their own hands. there's so much to learn, but it's very possible to become more and more aware of how different things impact your body, and to make small changes over time to get you closer to your specific goals. I'm a firm believer that you don't need to be a doctor, nor should you rely solely on doctors, to understand and improve your health.

Muslims fast this way, from sunrise to sundown. And a high protein diet is recommended when breaking the fast. 1400 years ago to this day we’ve observed this annually for a month. It’s said to help detox, grow, and minimize issues related to eating aswell. Interesting.

Unless you're not eating at night, Ramadan is closer to Intermittent Fasting or OMAD since you refeed daily as opposed to not eating anything for the duration of the fast. The stress is less on the body for sure but hormone rises are also lower.
Yeah fasting works really well, I do intermittent fasting 1 or 2 times a week. Even when I break my fast, the portion of my meal is the same as if I wasn't fasting. Has helped me put on a lot of lean mass and am shredded. I have also been doing the intermittent fasting now for over a year.
I've always found eggs to be a very safe way to break a fast. After long fasts I usually use a bone broth, but always include boiled eggs when I break a fast. I work out pretty hard while fasting and on a ten or eleven day fast I know I lose some muscle, but it comes back so fast on a high protein diet I really don't worry about it. Mostly I keep my fasts between three and five days to avoid the lose of muscle and add more muscle when I break the fast.
You don’t lose muscle on a fast. That doesn’t happen, your body does not burn anything but fat, glucose, or old protein (through autophagy). You only lose muscle if you don’t use it
Currently on a long fast, started 11/26 weighing at 354 lbs to now 12/18 (22 days) weighing at 314 lbs. Total loss so far is 40 lbs, and I feel great. Just water, black coffee, tea, and Himalayan pink salt. Not sure how long to keep going, hoping to drop below 300 by New Years. As far as breaking the fast I have a stock of bone broth ready. And I intend to follow that a day or two later with protein rich yet light foods such as a hard or soft boiled egg, etc. Had labs done last Friday on day 19 and my T levels were just under 800. Mind you I had low T prior to that which motivated me into this fasting journey. Thanks for the ear.
For both men and women, it is confirmed fact that more sexual partners means less capability for pair bonding, or it takes much more work to pair bond. It is for both men and women. The difference is that for women the effect is much greater, than it is for men. Both should limit their partners, but for women it very quickly becomes worse after 3-5 partners.
Hi Joseph, that's an interesting topic you bring up, but I'm having a hard time knowing what kind of fasting you do Can you do research on how Muslims fast or maybe to be more precise how their role model fasting (prophet Muhammad pbuh)? more than 2 billion people follow him, maybe it can be a best practice in fasting Thanks for your great videos, keep it up!
Agree with the positive findings. I experience them every time I fast. My white blood cell count increased after a 4 day water fast, from being so very low to being in the normal range.

I would love to learn what the minimum effective dose for these effects is, just finished a 5 day fast in part because of these but if I wanted to do a less extreme fast more often how many days would be the fewest to see a significant effect. For example would having the weekend as exercise rest days as well as fasting days lead to testosterone spikes in the week that would amplify the effectiveness of hypertrophy workouts? Would the hgh boost boost recovery on those days so recovery is greater? And so on. Would appreciate any knowledge shared
I started intermintent fasting 6 months ago. First 12/12, that as too easy, then 16/8, which was better, but hard to get enough protein in 8 hours. My first meal after the short fast is a smoothie that includes a large serving of FF Greek yogurt. Then a half hour later, it's eggs and meat, sometimes avocado. I've lost quite a bit if weight doing this and some work outs. I'm 60.
The only issue is, you'd have to keep repeating it to maintain that testosterone level.. The rapid spike after the refeeding would stabilize back to normal level in 5-6 days.. Based on my experience, the only sustainable fasting method to maintain testosterone is the weekly 36-hour one.. Eat dinner on Saturday, again eat breakfast on Monday..
In India , we celebrate a festival called navaratri, during which we fast for 9 days straight, and not allowed to eat anything non veg and even onions and garlic , and after the long fast we can eat whatever we want, I always wonder if these age old traditions like the navaratri or Ramadan have some scientific basis, pretty cool to think our ancestors might have figured out the secrets of fasting thousands of years before us , and we still cannot say anything for sure
Could you increase muscle growth with short periods of fasting, given that growth hormones are released? And if so how long/short should the fasting last?
you should take consideration the muscle protein synthesis also and your nutrition after re-feeding, that's why its always better to eat properly with low calorie high protein dense food.
I think evolutionary it makes sense that eating protein after a fast is beneficial Picture you and your tribe go weeks without food, then u finally manage to take down a mammoth
Joseph, as allways great video. Cool findings about fasting impat on T. But what about free T ? Because during a fast or carb restrinction diet SHBG allways increases significantly and so goes down free T, although total T stays at the normal or even higher range.
Exactly right. After breaking a fast I still have all the symptoms of low T for weeks afterwards. I believe it's because SHBG will remain high long after T levels level off to a normal range. It's all about free T, not total.
I remember learning as a kid that if you were starving in the desert for a week and made it out, the worst thing you can do is eat and drink like you did before because it can kill you. I was told that but I never knew why until now lol. I do intermittent fasting but I dig trenches in the desert for a living so going whole days without eating would have me passing out. Probably try longer fasting when I'm older.
I started carnivore last month at 186lb, now I am 177lb. I am a bodybuilder and I was eating about 2600 calories to maintain 186lb. My carnivore diet is now at around 3300 calories. Not only did I increase my calories significantly and lost weight, I believe I was mildly insulin resistant or had some hormonal balance even though I was an active person. My strength levels stayed the same. I am assuming majority of the weight lost was fat and water with a little bit of muscle. This video literally explains why carnivore works so well. Meat makes you full for prolong periods of time therefore your insulin isn't always spiking and your're essentially fasting without trying.
Awesome info thanks... I broke my fasting with bone broth 1 cup every hour 3 times, then a small portion of green salad and chicken and at the ends fatty meat. I feels great every time...I do this one a month and works just right every time.
Best fast breaking meal that works for me after 5-7 day fasts is just a single hardboiled egg followed by a small bit of paprika or cucumber half an hour later. Then after 4-6 hours you can definitely eat a whole meal albeit a low carb one, if you want but you'll probably feel full from that egg for most of the day 😅
👺👹🇯🇵 *Ancient Japan knew about refeeding syndrome back then. From personal experience, I can say fasting is amazing for heightened protein synthesis. Years back I did multiple prolonged fasting, starting out doing IF, then worked up to a 2 week(started out 2 days, 3, 5, 7, 9, then 14). Afterwards went to the gym for about 4 months, and got absolutely yolked. My life was also hectic then, working 40+ hours, taking 15 credit hours worth of college courses, and worked out 4 days a week for about an hour each day, and getting on average 6 hours of sleep a night.
As a muslim, we have ramdan when we fast 30days, each day from sunrise to sunset, but our prophet (PBUH) adviced us to break the fast with "dates" wich is this fruit full of fiber sugar and vitamines and also a sip of water then you have to pray for 30 min or more, wich helps digesting those nutrients.
Hi Joseph, great video as always. I’m a bit confused by your description of refeeding syndrome. I agree that there is a massive electrolyte flux into the cells, “diluting” the blood, but this would not increase blood volume (10:18) but rather decrease it. Furthermore, my understanding is that the electrolyte imbalance (specifically hypophosphatemia), coupled with insulin’s downstream effects, rapidly depletes energy stores, causing myocardial ischemia, rhabdomyolysis, and respiratory failure, leading to death. I think the myocardial ischemia can cause “heart failure,” if the person survives the acute phase, and the ischemia can decrease cardiac function and lead to heart failure in the more chronic setting. However, I think usually in the acute setting, the electrolyte imbalance causes a fatal arrhythmia, which is the more common cause of death from refeeding syndrome. Very minor correction, but otherwise great video!
Research Refeeding Syndrome - the way you eat after prolonged fasting is crucial - start with broth and very low carb cooked vegetables and/or a boiled egg. But even the egg yolk has a lot of sodium so be aware. No added salt to your refeeding meal after prolonged fast.
Fasting once per week combined with keto diet(very low carb diet) and compound exercises at the gym is the key. Naturaly 10x my testosterone in just 4 months!!! Feel much better than my teen age 💪
The best type of fasting is the Islamic fasting, a 30-day healthy balance of fasting and eating, andnof course doubling down with worship and its calming effect.
Subjective experience 100% agrees. I’ve always felt like the benefits of fasting hit around 48-72 hours after ending the fast. Say you fast for a day on a sunday. Make a note of how you’re feeling the following wednesday. Want to feel at your best for a party in the weekend? Fast for a day or 48h if you can handle it, on monday-tuesday. Peace!
@@gags730 They literally said on Monday or Tuesday, which is well before the party in the context of what they wrote. Or even after, you're not empty on going into the party regardless.
Bone broth is the best thing to break a fast with. It’s easy for digestion, especially ideal as your intestines tend to be a little brittle after a fast
What happens to testosterone after a fast beyond the short term (from 10 day after a fast to 3 months)? Did it stay high or go down after a few days? Thanks
I wonder how the other hormones in their bodies react as well. Will SHBG, progesterone, and aromatase increase and negate the effects of increased test in the case of fasting? What about androgen levels for muscle building? So many questions now.
This. How are the gonadotropins affected? Free Testosterone to Estradiol ratio? Thyroid hormones? DHEA and cortisol? These overly simplified videos on YT about changes to total T in isolation just don't tell you anything really.
