What began simply as a negotiating position in a licensing dispute, turned into one of the costliest decisions in the history of football.

@adventurerwannabe they are live simulations. It's the true experience of being a manager. You set your club and team up for success and you watch from the sidelines and make tactical adjustments that you hope your players listen to. Its better than fifa to me because I can't just control the players and make them play my way. I have to pick a team and tactics that will lead the game to be played in a way I want... and even then, we may go down and I will have to adjust my tactics or trust that my team will work their way into the game. You are a manager, not an omnipotent God like character that controls every player on the field lol

@@adventurerwannabethe gameplay is setting up the tactics and running the club, basically you play both as the manager and the director of football. If fifa is trying to simulate being Messi then FM is trying to simulate being Pep Guardiola.

To be fair… those games are fifa and madden… which they don’t actually own madden being the NFL and Fifa being fifa. So technically, his statement just pushes the blame to the license holders. For example Need for speed is definitely a different game every time… not that the game is good but it is different

As it's gone on, the game's just gotten more annoying. I have 19 and 22 here and I got so annoyed at 22 that I just went back and started up a new career in '19 and I've been SO much happier with that.

All the people that hated on PES were just console owners. I played both growing up but PES was always the King (quite literally too). Only console players hated it due to licensing but if you had a PC, the PES community solved just about every issue with mods.

Where do you think most of the players were? Back in those days consoles were the easy, and less expensive way to get into games. So consoles had all the casuals. All the casuals cared for was that the people and teams looked like.

I still play PES 3. For me it's not even about the licensing. I just love the physics of it. Also have PES 21 with mod, but often prefer playing 3 instead without any.

And that's part of the reason that PES could never and will never be able to compete. The majority of football gamers are on console. It doesn't not matter if PC football gamers can just mod the missing teams when console gamers who make up the largest amount of buyers can't.

PES is great I used to play before FIFA. But Pes lacks skill moves and the authenticity of fifa game was amazing with career mode with managing real clubs with real stadiums and all feels so great.

2K getting into football can only be a good thing, Since the gap widened on PES, EA Sports have been resting on their laurels more and more, the quality control of the last few games in particular, including EAFC24 have been nothing short of abysmal, with replicable, often game-breaking bugs and broken features that any semi-competent playtesting team would have ironed out on the first run, somehow persisting across multiple releases, particularly in the game's now severely neglected career modes. I'd go as far as to describe the EA Sports development team as the ONLY team in an industry defined by poor labour conditions and crunch cycles to be practically stealing their wages, because there's no real man hours going into these games anymore. the game's still selling because there's no real alternative for that football gaming fix either 2K provide a more competent alternative, or EA are forced to actually exert some effort again to stave off the erosion of their monopoly.

Imagine if the World Series were an independent tournament and tried to strongarm Sony about having the World Series in their game, and Sony instead just got the MLB and MLBPA licenses, as well as Japan League, KBO, Brazil, Puerto Rico, Cuba, etc licenses, and called the championship, well, the MLB Championship. Konami and FIFA would need a revenue or profit split deal, I imagine. Even them FIFA will still want too much money and control. FIFA's demands were greater than the value they brought to EA's series, I can't imagine they will lower them too much for the next developer. Either way the biggest problem will be the licensing of players, clubs and leagues. EA FC sales show people don't care about the FIFA name.

PES used to have better gameplay and physics than the old FIFAs did, but they could never compete because they couldn’t get the rights to players and clubs. Now that EA has the exclusive rights to the Prem, LaLiga, Bundesliga, PSG, Juve and other smaller leagues. How are FIFA and Konami going to compete if they can't even get 3 of the top 5 leagues and many others in their game when the game console crowd isn't able to just mod them in and are the biggest buyers of football games?

1. EA hasn't put out an NBA game since Live 19. 2K are the ones putting out NBA games now. 2. Madden is a similar situation to FIFA in that the name isn't the main selling point; it's the license with the NFL. If the Madden estate asks for too much, I can easily see EA changing their name to NFL Ultimate Team 25 or whatever.

There is currently a company backed by CR7 and KDB who are making a competitor called UFL (Ultimate Football League) and have already made a deal with FIFpro for licencing player images. If the game comes out (after 2 years of delays) and is actually good, FIFA might just run over there instead of bothering with 2K.

The UEFA in particular seems to be occupying an interesting spot in this dispute - for many years, PES was a commercial partner for them, countering the FIFA-EA-Dominance, but as soon as FIFA and EA broke up the UFEA was willing to license everything to EA to stick it to FIFA

According to T&C from Argentina, 2K has 800 licensed clubs from all around the world, and more than 35 national leagues to play. If this is true I hope 2K becomes the king, we need better football game and I also hope if they make their own version of UT they do it based in skills and don’t use handicap, make it real based in skills please! I was always a PES fan back in the day. The licensing is always good with EA, but if 2K get involved I think I’ll definitely be checking it out. the NBA games are great.

About PES vs FIFA, the reason FIFA won was that Konami refused to build a new game engine for the new console generation, so newer PES were scaled up older-gen games, while FIFA used the latest game engine, making a huge leap

Glad you mentioned Pro Evo, that was THE game when I was growing up. It's a shame EA bullied Konami out of the running as Pro Evo was a masterpiece and by far the better game. It would have been good to see both companies push each other to have better and better gameplay and standards instead of EA basically cutting Konami at the knees.

The whole Championship Manager/ Football Manager episode showed that it's vital to know where the value is. In that case it was the scouting network and the database, EA are hoping the FIFA name and licences aren't as vital as the game engine and fanbase. I suspect they're right.

It's hard to argue with Wilson, I didn't buy EAFC 24 straight away as I figured it wouldn't have the licensed teams anymore.....but inactuallity its the same as any other fifa title that came before.......just 4 letters on the box !!! Clearly Fifa dnt bring anything to the game....

If only it were illegal for EA to hold exclusive rights to player team and league names. If only there was an open and fair playing ground for multiple companies to make fun and realistic football sims, then competition would give us the best game possible.

EA didnt lose the NBA license to 2k. NBA 2K literally sold 20x the amount of copies of EAs NBA live.. EA just gave up. I'm hoping we get both American and global football/ soccer games from Take 2.. They seem to be much better at making realistic looking animations which usually leads to more realistic game play.

FIFA would have had a leg to stand on if they controlled all licensing for the players and all the football organisations in the world. It goes to show that FIFA misunderstood what people value about football first and foremost: the players themselves.
