How Footings Work In A Foundation

A footing in construction is the lowest part of the foundation that makes contact with the ground.
Without it the structure will eventually settle and fall apart.
Usually made with concrete and rebar, they are placed underneath loadbearing walls to distribute the weight of a house or a building.
Trench footers like these are dug into the ground using a backhoe or an excavator.
The ditch itself becomes the form for the concrete.
Footings, sometimes called footers, can also be formed using 2 x 10 s or other materials like Form-a-drain.
It’s critical that footings be placed on original undisturbed ground that can support the weight of the structure.
The bottom of the footing must be lower than the lowest depth that the ground can freeze in your region.
If the ground freezes below the footing it can actually lift the entire house and cause major structural damage.
Rebar is placed horizontally in footings to give the concrete tensile strength and is held up off the ground with chairs.
Vertical rebar can also be placed into footings leaving part of it sticking out. This part eventually becomes poured into the foundation walls tying the two together.

Dunno if you're still reading these but fun fact, here in the Netherlands (EU) the solid ground you're talking about is so deep that all buildings except basic sheds are built on metal pillars driven into the ground and filled with concrete, basically all houses here are built on poles. And they go pretty deep as well, multiple segments are just slammed into the ground by special machines, sorry, don't know the english terminology, these "heimachines" can get several stories tall as well and make a constant klanking noise as they drive the "heipalen" in. Even for our house extention we had to rent a crane to get 1 of these in our backyard

Fun fact…the term footings comes from the early days of brick houses which were often built in shallow trenches and the bricks laid straight onto dirt but 3 bricks wide, which measures a foot. After 2 or 3 courses this would be reduced to the normal (in the uk) 2 bricks width before reaching above ground. This was called a foot-in and was done simply to spread the load and reduce the chance of movement.
@bashkillszombies
@bashkillszombies 2 месяца назад
Pretty sure it's because it's the foot of the house. I've lived in 1,000+ year old houses in the UK and their footing is absolutely not a foot, they're huge. Hell most houses over 200-300 years old have 3-4 foot walls, so that makes no sense. 2 brick width walls is a post industrial revolution thing, way after footings became a term. Just because something sounds like something doesn't mean it's related.

As one person stated, drainage is important, and pour soil must be removed. Please do not assume natural undisturbed soil will adequately support your structure. And, natural soil can have varying degrees of firmness. After excavating any bad soil and the footing trench, use a vibratory compactor to compress the exposed soil. Place some fractured rock or fractured gravel (similar to what is used to make highway asphalt or high quality concrete) over your compacted soil. Then compact that rook/gravel. Then start forming.

Built many houses. Every footer we installed with planks and rebar we also used a lazar level as this is somewhat critical. Didn't hear this mentioned but good video!

GREAT video. It is surprisingly hard to get into the construction lingo when youre coming at it from no experience whatsoever. These videos realy help that. Nice work keep it up.

I always thought it was the BOTTOM of the footing that must be below frost depth. Great video! Much appreciated!
@hausplans
@hausplans 6 месяцев назад
That’s correct, only the bottom of the footing needs to be lower than the frost line. I realize my drawing was confusing and made it look like the top.

You are the 2nd channel ive actually subbed to off of shorts. As an aspiring engineer and dreams of building my own home one day. Stuff like this makes the concept of building a home aeem so much tangible and possible. Just learning general concepts over time makes understanding and applying the fine details so much easier. Great channel

I like learning about construction it’s one of the few categories. I don’t know a lot about and I have a big interest in homesteading and learning how to build real long lasting structures, but I’m also smart enough to pay somebody when I’m notsure I can do it. I did not even fathom how much goes into just making a foundation. I understood the reinforcement part but I had no idea. They were two separate parts to the cement that become one.

As someone who wants to build my own home with the hands God gave me, videos like this are teaching me everything I need to know. I want the house out of brick with a concrete foundation. I was originally planning on using Roman designs for roads to build it, with a concrete shell, then placing the bricks on the concrete.

when I got to see what goes into the foundation at 10 years old when we doubled the size of our house ..... It is VERY important or the whole thing can be a total loss. Love to see this.

after seeing houses being built with 3d printed concrete and no rebar or frames held together by only stud sheets and prayers, and multiple other building offenses that appear on shorts. It is very refreshing to see someone actually building a solid house with good fundamental knowledge and not stupid gimmicks that will need to be completely re done after 5 years

In Sweden, modern building standard is basically excavating the whole area down to below freezing, fill with drainage, then thick styrofoam for insulation and THEN concrete slab on top. Whole house is “anchor”, and drained and very insulated from underneath.
