Oh God... This was me... You are directly calling me out in this video... I was in Japan last summer and I was very conscious not be a "filthy foreigner" . I was very critical of other foreigners who were committing faux pas. I travel a lot and it gets really difficult when other foreigners ruin it for us. I studied Japanese customs the 2 weeks before going there so that way I could be maximally respectful. It seems like I was the very cringe I sought to destroy....

@marklucachev6695

It IS rude to be disrespectful and... rude (?). I mean I feel like that's obvious... there are plenty of Japanese who dislike it when foreigners are messy, noisy, etc... same as they would with a Japanese person being messy, noisy, etc. The difference is they usually can't communicate with the foreigner to say 'bro, stop it', so instead they just ban foreigners from their shop to avoid the hassle. I'm conversationally fluent in Japanese and have never had a problem entering anywhere. Nope, I can't read every single kanji for every single kind of fish (not high on my priority list of vocab to study lol), and sometimes I get tongue-tied, but the only real discrimination I've faced has been that a VERY few stores have different (higher) prices for foreigners, which #feelsbadman. But I also feel a bit queasy and uncomfortable whenever I see other foreigners being loud, rude, etc... because I'm ashamed of my countrymen and because I don't want to be lumped-in with them, as someone who lived in Japan and speaks the language. And there's nothing wrong with that. Also, let's be honest, western (well, American) culture REALLY sucks right now. Take a brief glance at Tiktok to see how rude, selfish, etc... people are. We just don't have the same social contract they do in Japan. So yeah, it's perfectly reasonable to not want that crap in an otherwise super polite country like Japan.
@helper_bot
@helper_bot 4 месяца назад
its not really your job to critic them, if i were you id just do the normal thing either ignore/call security if they're really making a ruckus and let the actual natives deal with it. i'm just saying of course, personally it'd be impossible for me to learn specific ethics in japan (e.g. from ordering a food, down to underground crime, etc) within 2 weeks

As a foreigner who came to live in Japan 10 years ago, I confirm this actually happens. Until a few years ago, there was more solidarity… with foreigners looking or smiling at each others when seeing each other in the streets even if they didn’t know each other. Now we feel entitled to criticize each other because we love to pump up our ego as “experts about Japan”. I also have to admit to myself that now I really can’t suffer seeing foreigners who just arrived to Japan and know absolutely nothing going around teaching other foreigners about Japan. Or those ones making RU-vid videos about every stupid shit they see or experience while they’re here. Like when they take the bus and they show “This is a Japanese buuuuus, how magnificent!” and I’m there thinking “Dude, don’t you have buses in your country too?” 😂

Just recently been to an Izakaya and when the Staff asked me something I didn't know a specific word and two "other foreigners" made fun of my Japanese when i excused myself at the staff. Meanwhile those two weren't fluent either as i could tell by my own knowledge and just pretend to be. Not a single Japanese ever were annoyed because I'm not fluent yet. It kind of ruined my day seeing how fellow foreigners look down on you. I don't enjoy tourism in general because I'm myself a bit biased but I'm doing my best to not insult anyone and I'm aware most do nothing bad. It always made me happy seeing tourists interested in Switzerland's customs and culture, so I don't see why Japanese would have an issue if you enjoy their culture and do your best. In fact any migrant who manages to speak swiss german has my utmost respect.

Just throwing my two cents out there. I think a reason for this behavior is people getting the segregation treatment with commercial businesses, japanese only restaurants, hotels, ect. This makes people feel like the country isn't very welcoming or even downright hostile to them, so they do what people must do when faced with such a situation, try to integrate and bully other foreigners in an attempt to "fit in." It's honestly quite sad if you really think about it and it's quite similar to what happened in America during the prohibition era when the Irish were ostracized, so what did they do to fit in? Start bullying other peoples groups. I'm not saying this is right but there is a pattern and I hope people realize this so this stops happening period, where all humans at the end of the day, nationality, ideology, ect are all just labels. Anyways if you managed to read through this I wish you a nice day and to please be kind to one another.

@Scribit339 I mean, even when my japanese was way worse, I got into everything. Most business arent really trying to turn you down, but they clearly don't focus on getting foreigners without Japanese to their store either. As far as I've heard, the 18+ entertainment sectir is a bit picky, but I have no idea how much. I don't think most cone for that reason.
@yoshineitor
@yoshineitor 4 месяца назад
@@Scribit339 I mean I have only seen "foreigners not allowed" signs on sex-related locations, for reasons you can check online (Yakuza owners might be concerned with diseases and size-stuff). If a shop has banned foreigners it is probably not a very good one or important one, popular restaurants, shops and hotels cater towards tourists (and by extension foreigners) so even if they had trouble with foreigners before they won't ban them as it might represent a solid portion of their income.

I also visited in Japan in 2018. The worst things I witnessed were some Americans being a bit loud during a live performance (you couldn't properly hear the artist anymore) and some Chinese walking between plants in a park where the signs clearly said they weren't allowed. But for the rest, everyone seemed pretty well behaved. Sora brought up Johnny Somali (and similar streamers). I do think this has caused a reaction cause those people really made foreigners look so disrespectful. This foreigner vs foreigner thing is probably an overcorrection. I'm not sure it's necessarily a bad thing in principle. Hold your own accountable when they do dumb things that make your entire group look bad.

@@MustardSkaven I literally just got back to the US this past Wednesday. The amount of foreigners WAS insane compared to when I lived there (2014-2016). Thing is, most of them were not westerns but Chinese. There were probably 100 Chinese tourists to every 2 white/brown tourists. The few Indian, Pakistani, American, UK, etc... tourists I saw were all generally polite and seemed perfectly calm and respectful... the worst thing was the fact that they generally dressed like homeless bums lol. But I didn't see any of them being rude. On the other hand, every time I saw someone being really outright rude or obnoxious, I'd think "wow, that's the rudest Japanese person I've ever seen!", and then as soon as they got close or opened their mouth, I heard the Mandarin or Cantonese and realized they were Chinese visitors. Honestly, China, you guys gotta get with the program. I've got a number of Chinese friends who are all nice and polite but the mainlanders flooding Japan... yikes!

I like how Filthy Foreigners are now despised in Japan.. meanwhile when it was Filthy Frank's era, he was creating chaos wherever he went with that pink suit, and it was ok, weebs even worshipped him. _😂🙏🏻😂🙏🏻_

it was started by this one somawho guy pranks are one thing, i dont think FFrank ever made someone hurt, or get arrested at the police station, he know full well about the rules and ethics, and he just does his own thing and again, japanese people themselves mostly dont care about gaijin the problem now (after that somawho guy got arrested i think idk idc abt his life) other foreigners just keep on faulting others for the stupidest thing possible which is pretty dumb, at least thats what i understand from this video

It's such a cute outlook from a japanese, that foreigners are the same and they would not bully each other. For Japanese only Japanese and Foreigners exist, which is hilarious. This kind of talking trash about each others tourists happens everywhere.
@Scribit339

This is an interesting perspective I hadn't heard before, but it makes sense. I was just in Japan a few months ago and outside of the tourist hot spots, I didn't really even see many tourists. Most places I went to, I was still the only non-Japanese person there. The tourist situation seems similar to NYC, Paris, etc.

You hit the nail square in Sora, but there's actually another level to it. I've been living in Japan since 2010 and I came originally as a student. A friend who came during our studies with me pointed out an interesting phenomen. He is dark skinned and I'm light skinned. Whenever he saw another dark skinned person (regardless of their country of origin) they always exchanged a nod of approval. He described it as "a we made it" sort of feeling. However, when he observed two light skinned people, or when I saw someone who also had light skin, I would always get a shocked or disappointed look like from them like "what are you doing here!?" We talked a lot on this, and he made an interesting point. For some Western people, Japan has a very "pure" or mysterious image, and seeing another person with the same light skin color as them broke the illusion or image in their head, thereby causing disappointment and resentment. Perhaps it's due to some fetishization of the culture. But what you're describing to me has been something always there, just not in the zeitgeist until now.

If you have a pest problem and know the damage they'll cause, of course you'll look at a house in danger of being overrun with rats and go "jesus fuck, that house is going to get swarmed." So a country overrun by ceiling bird owners will look at Japan having to deal with ceiling bird owners like Johnny Somali and go "jesus fuck, they need to take a stand."

I wonder if the increase in tourism is because people have had it on their 'bucket list' of things to do, and with how awful things have been the past few years, people are doing more of the 'luxury' or 'once in a lifetime' trips while they can. I know that's certainly the case for me.
