Kings and Queens, welcome to another episode of Living in China Series.
Today’s street interview is coming from Shanghai and Hangzhou where I asked some expats their views on China over the period they've lived here.
Let's watch to see their responses.

Basically I will ignore what people think about my country if they haven't stayed in China for at least five years.

No restrictions until the local govts. decide they want someone's land or for street peddlers to pay more for their license to do business or freeze peoples bank accounts because they are going bankrupt . Maybe foreigners are allowed some peace and leeway but how about the local people . Unfortunately this socialism that promises equality and prosperity for all is never delivered and it is spreading even to so called democratic govts. When the state takes full control of peoples lives only the elite and cronies benefit .

Having stayed in and out in China since 2014 I consider it a good place for the most part. It's annoying Internet is so restricted and a few other things but I feel safe, people are for the most part friendly. When I'm back home in Norway I always feel I want to go back to China. Many things are convenient here in China, cities are modern, travelling is convenient. During covid it was bizarre of course but hopefully this is over now.

foreigners weren't happy because of strict policy during the lockdowns in China because they never grasped that you protect yourself and you also protect others around you concept. the strict lockdown is to protect the most vulnerable, infants and elderlies. US lost more than a million to the pandemic. China barely a fraction of that. let them leave.

wtf!?!?! Why are they coming back? The government should ban them forever. They want to complain so bad when the times are tough and want to reap the benefits when the times are good? No way! Great video. Thanks! Here's a suggestion for in between interviews.... simply film some community scenes where there are people. This will allow those living outside China a glimpse of the everyday here and now situation in China - this helps us, who don't live in China, get a real daily picture of China and helps dispel the constant negative narratives. 💡

@@KINGKWESI Thanks! However, don't put too much effort into this because too much effort may result if you feeling burnt or feeling like it's a chore and ending up resentful, etc. Here are some ideas, show us: busy scenes at parks, outside shopping areas, perhaps outside a hospital (if there is one in your community), public transit, etc. Revisit places where there are people and mention that date it was filmed. Thanks again!

Leaving COVID behind, I would like to expound a little bit on the "rules and restrictions" part: it's all about the population, land, and culture. Please think about an example, let's say the US. Compared to China, the US has a similar size territory but a far less population, which means that the social density in the US is much less than that of China. In addition, the area of land that is habitable for human beings is less in China than in the US. Have you ever heard of the famous Tengchong-Heihe line? Almost 96% percent of the Chinese population lives on the east side of this line because the west side is mostly naturally inhabitable. This causes an even larger difference between the social density of China and the US. When a country's social density increases, the government has no choice but to implement more rules and stricter laws because the rate of crime and other similar problems rise a lot when people live closer to each other. This suggests that if the US also had a 1.4 billion population and the Americans were all forced to live on one side of the country, the US government must also be forced to pass more social rules and stricter laws to maintain the stability of the entire nation. Another reason is that in Chinese culture, "powerful entities" have been admired for thousands of years. These entities can be a mighty army, a capable military general, a charming emperor, and so on. This means that the Chinese people are more obedient to the government than people in other countries do. Now you should know why there are more rules and restrictions in China than in South Korea or other countries.

Not really. Interviewing people returning to a country makes more sense actually. It forces them to remember the problems outside and inside the country better and why they choose to return. Some people will give biased opinions when they want to leave a country.

Westerners tend to be impatient whereas us in the East/Asians are largely more patient and tend to commit actions based on long term consequences. Unsurprisingly, the ones mostly irritated with China's lockdowns are westerners, particularly Americans lol. You can also tell from the Americans living domestically in their own countries how they feel about lockdowns so some of the opinions expressed here are not particularly surprising. I don't think this quality is necessarily bad... just different, I suppose. Nice video!
