In Zambia, 72-year-old Clare and her three sisters are facing serious drought. They live in the Senanga District, where 78% of the population live below the poverty line, or on less than $2 per day. Women bear the brunt of this crisis.
Clare is one of 1,280 other farmers who enrolled in Action Against Hunger’s black-eyed pea (cowpea) project. They are planting drought-resistant crops in an effort to fight both climate change and gender inequality.
Before the project, Clare faced disaster. “Our crops completely dried up and we had nothing to harvest,” she said. “During that time, there were many days where we couldn’t get food and had nothing to eat.”
