Nice to know that I spent 11 years of my life learning how to speak like an 80 year old librarian in the 19th century instead of a a hip 30-something year old guy. I mean, I grew up with a French mother but I had no clue there was slang like this. It's too late to learn it now.

Agreed, *_especially_* with French government officials only formal French should be used. If you make an error it will be better for you to make an error politely (formal) than in slang. D'accord, *_surtout_* avec les représentants du gouvernement français, seul le français formel doit être utilisé. Si vous faites une erreur, il vaut mieux que vous fassiez une erreur poliment (formel) plutôt qu'en argot.

I'm a native English speaker. I had to look up what trainers means. At first I assumed it was a British vs American English thing but it turns out, the definition has a specific difference from sneakers in the world of Athletics. It might still be more British though.

@@kinparlink I know there's a lot of different french dialects and in Brittany there is "Breton" which many people speak but I think most people know to speak traditional French if they are speaking to a non local. Some accents are needless to say very difficult to understand. I just hope I can one day use my French when I get to visit my mother in Brittany without being forced to get you know what.

@@kinparlink my family learned French and it took us a while to get used to Parisian dialect, but don't worry, if you try to speak _any_ French they will be quite happy to try to understand. I have had multiple instances where I asked a question or requested something in what I thought was French and the person I'm talking to looks a little confused, asks a question in response that I don't quite catch, I apologize with "Désolé, je parle anglais et j'apprends le français". By this time the butcher, his coworkers, and the people in line behind me are all working to help each other and me understand each other, even asking if anyone else speaks English. And there is no mockery or embarrassment at all, just a sincere desire to help a person learn French. This has happened at multiple places. If you try, the French will do their best to help if they can! This may be different in some areas, but so far it has been true around Paris, Versailles, and in the country to the East of Paris.
