Man, I love this store. What's interesting is the old school vegetarian bee hoon beside it, $2 for a beehoon meal with assorted goodies and the zai er comes in 1 big piece. Braised duck beside the carrot stall ain't half bad too. Bak kwa infront has crazy long queues before CNY, beside that store there's the sesame oil chicken which is awesome to me. Many good eats in that hawker centre!

I have been eating their carrot cake since youth, thats when their parents were still around. I really love the fragrance of this carrot cake. Never fails to amaze me!

Most of my friends in NZ are a bit puzzled because I keep going back to Singapore for holidays. They get even more puzzled once I tell them it's just for the food; this vlog illustrates perfectly why I keep coming back - the wok skills and great technique (artistry?) that go into creating a plate of food that is so simple, and so tasty, but costs less than a capuccino in NZ! I don't usually go for white carrot cake very often, I already have a few favourite stalls for the black one but this one looks worth the bus ride out west to try the white. The only two stalls whose white carrot cake I used to really like are both gone now - Miow Sin was at Lavender but I'm not sure where they went after the food centre closed. There was also a good one at North Bridge Rd - Ke Shuang Xing - but I heard the uncle retired and nobody else in the family could do carrot cake like he did. Last time I was in NBR the stall was still open but they were doing laksa etc.

The Clementi one is still pretty good. The Uncle makes it better but I Guess we gotta take whatever it is now. Still amazing that I would q for an hour

You should try the one at Pipit Road morning market.. fried by a uncle in 80s.. doing it since with his dad on trishaw.. he is genuinely old school... he cut the carrot cake in the hot pan so have small bits or big chunk, unlike nowadays people use wire net to cut and looks like kway teow. Open from 6am to 10am... if you like carrot cake.. this is hidden gem must try.

wow seriously he's so super generous with the eggs!! looks yummy! the one in whampoa food centre shortchanged customers - super stingy with eggs uses 3 eggs for 4 servings of $4 carrot cake of a small portion!!

Been eating from this stall since I was a kid. The grandpa is a real character with his thick eyebrow and straw hat. Now his granson taking over I think

I just sssooo miss char kwey teow... One of my fave together with hokkien mee.. Mee goreng nasi lemak roti prata with curry... Laksa... Hor fun... Used to hang out in clementi 448 coffeeshop when i was in singapore.. 11 yrs has pass.. I definitely will go back and visit soon... Oh and i miss porridge sambal.. Nasi padang... ONDEHONDEH... BUBUR CHACHA.. and claypot rice.. MADRE MIA AM DROOLING... Been craving all those food since i came here in Madrid..

The original carrot cakes I loved to eat way back in the 50s' & 60s' were fried with chunky pieces of lard and chopped garlic, with sweet soy sauce. They were in strips of around 4x1cm, fried to a near crisp sometimes for that smoky flavour. That's extinct now. Today's version is all chopped and mashed up.

I noticed that the stall now opens in the afternoons so gave them a try. Ordered the black version extra sweet but it was a total disappoinment. It tasted more like less sweet than extra sweet and was lacking in overall flavour (forgot to add seasoning and ran out of chye poh?). It was a soggy mess. The guys manning the stall weren't the usual ones. Sorry Greg, but the stall at Clementi West Street 2 does it much better.

hey greg, can you think about doing a program that shows all the sauces that these hawkers use. i never get to see the brands they use because everything goes so fast. plus i live in sweden and would like to know if i can find the same brands here. i think it would be a great show. anyway, keep up the good work! love your content as always!

A vlog about sauces is hard to be honest. A lot of Hawkers protect their recipes by pouring the sauces into plain bottles.

it is part of the business secrecy. Equivalent to baking recipe that are scattered around internet and book, they will only tell you the "public/common" recipe. That's why a dish will taste different between hawker ( 外卖)and homecook . (MSG / flavor enhancer play a big role here ) . Also sauces like oyster , dark/light soy sauce, mirin, cooking wine ( shaoxing , red, white , etc ) differred among region and manufacturer. Local foods are heavily influenced by these local manufactured sauce. Like chhá-kóe-tiâu in Penang will have different taste bud (aroma, saltiness, sweetness) with Medan mainly because they use different Soy Sauce (local only). oh, other modus operandi instead of using plain/no-brand bottle is they will use different brand sauce. It will trick you thinking that they use XX brand sauce. Usually with big and famous brand to give the impression of premium class.

Geez, haven't been to Clementi Central early enough in a while to catch this stall's goodies. Are they new owners or next generation owners? Is the taste still good as claimed by many? My preference at any stall is always a balanced delight of half white half black.

Love carrot cake. Have never minded the oiliness of hawker food. However, in this instance the frying technique (huge batch) requires a LOT of oil and here they really used much more oil than needed, as seen from the oil separation. Just my opinion.. Nice video, though, and I can't wait for the review.

Fried Carrot was a lot better when i was growing up in Singapore from late 80s to tge early 90s. The cake was softer and was not as dry as they made them from the late 90s onwards. What happened? Can't they bring back the original quality? Now all you taste are the sauces.
