In 1933, legendary director Fritz Lang made a film criticizing the Nazis just as they were coming to power. However, instead of the slap on the wrist he was expecting, he was offered the position at the head of the German film industry. Lang knew he had to escape Germany, but how did he do it?

I believe when you mention the "Yellow shirts" you are referring to the Sturmabteilung/SA which were called the brown shirts not the yellow shirts as you say
@CinemaTyler

Thanks for the correction. The story in this video is built out of a couple of interviews Fritz Lang gave in which he referred to them numerous times as 'Yellow Shirts.' Hopefully in context it will make sense.

Wait, I thought you were pwning us with the "yellow shirt" references, a subtle wink as if to say, "This whole 'Fritz trolls the Nazis' story has about as much substance as a Mabuse fever dream" and if you were paying attention, you would have seen the clue I provided by deliberately getting the Nazis' shirt color wrong.

Főgler László Even if he intentionally put that line in the film, to "embarrass, or sleight the Nazis, he would've had to been boasting about it to people. As one line, that doesn't even use the exact phrase, would've just went unnoticed by most. I'm not saying he wasn't thinking about it, when he wrote the film, but one would have to know he had disgust for the Nazis, to see the entire "mad genius", as symbolic for Hitler, and his promise of the empire/Reich. You're comment makes it more apparent with how careful he was being. As he had the built in excuse, that he used the word herrschaft, instead of reich, as to not offend them. He did leave without much of his money, but I believe that was just because of the times, and the fact he would've been monitored. Taking a large sum, or transferring it, would've had him under the thumb of Goebbels, most likely intimidated to make propaganda for the party.
@TheXeldrak

Doesn't he say "Der letzte Sinn des Verbrechens ist es, eine beschränkte Herrschaft des Verbrechens aufzurichten."? So, a proper translation would be "The ultimate purpose of crime is to establish a limited reign of crime." I really don't see how you could translate it as "the endless empire of crime"

Mabuse was a very popular villain in Germany, movies about him were made into the 60s, with Fritz Lang directing some. Many recognizable faces from German cinema starred in them, Gert Frobe, (Goldfinger) Peter can Eyck ( The Spy Who Came In From The Cold) and Wolfgang Priess (The Longest Day and A Bridge Too Far.) Thanks, really enjoyed this.

I'd really love to see some conversation about "M" Fritz's 1931 film which also has some Nazi satire in it. I've heard that the Nazi's adopted the film as great until they realized that the gang in the movie represented them.
@landofthesilverpath5823
@landofthesilverpath5823 Год назад
Interesting, I always interpreted the criminal underworld in the movie as anti-heros. Sure, they were thieves and beggars and so on. But they at least had enough honor to get rid of a serial child killer/rapist. I mean, the killer wasn't exactly the good guy of the film being oppressed or anything.

@@landofthesilverpath5823 that just shows how amazing the Movie is. The Gang states that what they do (begging, stealing, what ever) is their job ("everyone got to make a living") and if cops/the police force is harmed in conflict they say that's what they (the cops) signed up for. They knew the risk. They gangsters are portrait in a relatable way. And get even more relatable when they state that murdering children (and making the police disrupt their business) is inexcusably! They are even offended that the police thinks the killer is one of them. So they decide to take things in their own hands. I think on that point everyone rooted for them and their chance of getting the murderer, especially after the police couldn't get him by then. But in the end, especially with the speeches given at the "trial" you see that they are not so nice guys after all. The language (I only know the German version) is heavily influenced by fascist rhetorics. Even if they look like a Court they are only a better organised lynch mob where the outcome of the trial is already clear the beginning. That's when the mask falls.
@Mrs_Beanbag
@Mrs_Beanbag 2 месяца назад
Relatable at first, and sympathetic for the "hands on" mentality especially compared to the inefficient police but nothing but a deadly lynch mob in the end. Maybe that movie is still relevant almost 100 years after it's release 😅😅
@nicktosti7487
@nicktosti7487 2 месяца назад
@@landofthesilverpath5823 that's the interesting flip of the movie, the criminal is built up as a shadowy big bad figure but is the most pathetic person in the film. The mother at the end feels no justice has truly been served.
