I saved to splurge on winter clothes. I waited until my favorite thrift store had a 30% off apparel day. I bought 10 new to me shirts for $4.00 each. So fun

@chaoticallysay2625 It depends on the area where you live where people in that area are from a Scandinavian ancestry or German and have genetically larger bodies. It also depends on the size of the city. I have heard that a lot of thrift stores now sell the nicer donations online.

Being a Counselor, many people overspend because of depression, not feeling good enough, mental health issues and childhood trauma. I truly enjoyed the segment!!! Thank you for sharing!!!!

Oh, so true! I spent too much money on things and experiences for a couple of years (!) trying to distract myself from a trauma that I had experienced. Finally, after some therapy, my mental health (and budget) is much better.

I appreciate the topic about giving at work. I used to be all in on everything work😐. I’d donate sick leave, I would stay late, come in early…I mean, I spent a lot of time and energy at this place. And I worked hard. After a series of disappointments, I changed my attitude and now I’m there for the paycheck and the paycheck only. Sometimes it makes sense to just separate your work life from your personal life and to stop giving so much energy to a job.

Gave up having nails done…$150 a month. I started using that money ( I am very OK with saving, debt free) doing the small things my house needed…replaced awful bright fake brass door hardware in my house, chalk painted a pretty awful “ boho” dresser in my room and added new hardware, put coded key pad entry doors locks, custom blinds downstairs (saving for upstairs as I write). Painted window frames in kitchen dining area…many little things…coat rack in entry…all done on the money I would have spent on nails and a tips in 1 year. As this year finishes I will have everything done. I will then start a sinking fund with unspent “nail” money. ( my car is 13 yrs old so I need that!)

That’s great! I know once you start doing things like nails, hair, exercise classes or hobbies, it’s hard to stop mainly because you develop relationships with the people providing the service.

I'm trying something new fir November. I call it "No Shop November" and what I mean by that is that I will not shop for extras outside of basic groceries and gas. This is tough because of all the upcoming Black Friday sales, but I'm working on that delayed gratification and really analyzing my spending. Im a free spirit with spending, so this is a huge challenge for me.

I have been blessed so much. I try each month to donate to someone I know that is having difficulty. Like friends that were in a bad motorcycle accident 6 months ago and can't work. I donated to their son's senior trip. I considered my porch and fenced yard a mental benefit, someplace to take a break from my stressful job.

"Self care" has become a phrase that people use to justify spending money on things they don't really need. There are so many self-care things that are free or cheap, but that 15$ gourmet chocolate bar isn't "self care", it's indulgence.

My parents actually told me they dont want me to spend more than £10 on their Christmas presents. Quite a challenge,but they said dont spend too much and they dont judge me by the size of the gift.

For a useful Christmas presents for a few Dollars: does your family member/friend have pet dog(s)? What about dog poo bags. I use nappy bags for poo bags which are cheaper. A few packs of poo bags would be useful and not go over budget.

Lots of great talking points here! RE: giving--I used to have places I regularly gave money. When the pandemic hit, these organizations (all national) got greedy and started begging for more and more money. I thought it was incredibly tacky at a time when so many people were struggling. I totally changed my way of looking at it and now I only give to local organizations, where I know the majority of the money is staying within my community. Same with thrift donations, I no longer give to Salvation Army or Goodwill but to a local thrift that is all volunteer run and all profits are kept within the area.

I love that you were generous to widows and people who have been diagnosed with cancer because I've been in both of those situations. My husband had cancer for a total of 8 years and had a remission for 4 years in between his treatments and then passed away at the age of 51. He had been on disability for a couple of years at that point and I had already lost my job because of the stress and difficulty of the illness in part, along with my own health problems. There were some of my husband's co-workers as well as my parents who helped us out as much as they could and it was a lifesaver! Having cancer even with medical insurance can and will, will destroy your financial life. I know God will bless you greatly for being so generous and kind with Hiis money ❤❤❤

My heart goes out to you. We have a family in our lives who just lost their mother to cancer. A month later, the dad lost his job. If we hadn't been so frugal all these years, we would not be able to help them out. It is so gratifying to help and NO material wealth gives me the happiness that generosity gives.🇨🇦♥️

I wish i had the money I've spent over last 40 years for clothes, coffee, happy hour with friends. Omg, retrospective look tells me i was not frugal in my younger years. Definitely frugal now; no new clothes, cars, etc. I'm good with what i have.😊

Haha I’m with you Larry on the chick Fil A sandwich lol but for real for me it helps me to spend money on what I call mini dates with my husband, we go for ice cream scoops (1 scoop) or coffee at QuickCheck or an inexpensive lunch ($10-12) because it gives us quality time out of the home where we aren’t distracted by the family or the television. Then I also budget for quality time with my son, he doesn’t like those home board games and doing things like he used to when he was a kid, so I take him out for a walk to window shop and buy him a bubble tea or we go once a month of a lunch outside, again using the lunch special. So these aren’t normally frugal but I budget these in so I can reconnect with my family outside of the home distractions.

Being retired and on a fixed low income a way that I frugally enhance my mental and physical health is by joining the local senior’s centre. It is only $45 for the whole year. They have something happening Monday to Friday 9-4. I take two exercise classes a week and also join in the Golden Oldies singing group. I am also involved in my church belonging to two women’s groups and the choir. I too tithe and allow a certain amount every month on top of that for donations to good causes like the food bank.

Or look at the price and say " it's cute but it's not $$ cute" lol wait and see if it's on sale when it is the price you are willing to pay - if it is still available it was meant to be 😊. I worked in retail for 12years and we were required to wear what was currently being promoted. This is how I was able to have the wardrobe required. And I still do this. I also only buy something if it goes with at least 3 other things and I can wear it to work. When it can no longer be worn to work it becomes "play" clothes or donated if in good shape. Gym clothes are usually bought at goodwill or other thrift stores and double as PJs. When clothes are no longer in shape to be worn depending on the fabric they become rags or quilt scraps (I have a quilt my hubby's grandmother made and when my mil saw it she started pointing at the different pieces and saying "this was my dress this was Pa's pajamas etc." ). It was a family history lesson in a beautiful blanket. Lol

But I don't like to shop under pressure, so I look at clearance on off peak hours. If I am not sure about an item, and someone is breathing down my neck to see everything I buy, I am NOT above loading up my buggy, walking to the other side of the store to take a breather and decide if I need to buy the items. And I put them back when the dragon breathers are long gone from the area.

I dont have much left in my budget for anything but essential needs. My taxes, insurance rates and unexpected car repairs ate through my savings. As a result, my generosity fund, will be going toward volunteering on my day off at my local food bank once a month.

My family and my close friends who are like family have changed how we approach holiday giving and now we do this: each person puts in $25 and the name of a charity with a description on why they picked it. We put all the names with charities in a hat and pick two and that’s who the money goes to. I no longer have to wrack my brain trying to figure out what to buy, how to make sure I spend about the same on each person, and wrapping all those gifts. It’s a win-win for all.

Great Video! I follow Frugal Queen in France and recently they had a terrible storm with winds over 140 or 160 mph (I forget). They have had their power out for an extended period of time. Just after I watched their last video i saw an ad for a solar power station.( I used to look at gas powered generators but I am intimidated by them.) I got the power station to the checkout and decided it was just too much. I emptied my cart and left it. Two days later I saw a black Friday sale on the same power station but $400 off. I looked online to find a coupon and found one for 5% off totaling $94. So to make a long story shorter, I bought it at almost $500 off. Free shipping to Canada. I could have lived without it but I could afford it and it's giving me peace of mind, and I have wanted one since you did your power out video. I feel I am justifying buying it when it probably wasn't the the most frugal purchase but i have a freezer and fridge it will run for a while when the power is out. Which happens ever year here.

Because of your channel I have gone from just having a budget that has worked for me very well to having a goal list. If I went on just my monthly budget my house will be paid off in 7 years but if that goal of paying off my house and focus all my extra income on just the house pay off I can have it paid off in 30 months. That is more important than anything else right now at the end of that time I can save for other things. In about 6 years my roof needs replacing, with that mortgage paid off it will be easy to pay for the new roof or a newer car. Just continue to live on that budget and save the rest.

My frugal elderly client once told me to never impulse buy anything. If you’re wanting an item, save for it. Once the money is saved, 9 out of 10, you really didn’t need that item. Now you’ve saved extra money for your retirement! lol. It’s worth the theory! It’s worked for me the last 20 years.

My generosity comes in homemade gifts or meals. I love to crochet, so many of my gifts are crocheted. (You were recipients of some of that last Christmas.) I donate lapghans and slippers to a local Hospice. My baking goes to family, neighbors, and my parish priests.

I like the generosity budget. At the moment, things like snacks for the church youth group just come out of my ordinary household budget. I am also working to gain income from hobbies, so am currently crocheting 'snowflakes' to sell as Christmas decorations.

I have definitely done that in the past..especially at the thrift store.. but lately I went to the thrift store specifically to by a winter coat because I did not have one..while I found a nice coat for $6.99. I also found a name brand jacket for $6.99 and I almost bought it. But I had to remind myself I was just given a new jacket by a friend and did not really need a jacket. I was so proud of myself for putting the jacket back; and I only bought the coat.

I think context is important in this topic. Overspending for one person may be perfectly justifiable for another. I like to spend a lot of money on healthy, organic food because it's important to me. However, I still try to cut food costs as much as I can...I think a lot of people overspend on Christmas gifts and try to justify it because it's Cmas. Americans are greedy during the holidays and it's really a shame.

Sometimes, when in a discussion with other people who are asking me about our attitude towards spending and money, I will say we are semi-frugal. When I say that word "frugal", when I hear me saying that word, I can hardly believe that that word came from my lips. We were for decades anything but frugal but when we realized that we had to change behavior we did an abrupt 180. It is a struggle, but I think we are winning the battle. It is in my view a mindset that we need to constantly reinforce.

I just spent just under $500.00 for air purifier air filters. I COULD have spent $159.00 per filter set +$9.95 UPS shopping. OR, I could have spent under $93.00 per filter set for five filter sets with FREE shipping (while saving $59.00 MORE in shipping costs.) Obviously, I did the latter.These are enough filters for our TWO Air Doctor air purifier units that we will need during the next four to five years and with the prices of EVERYTHING going up in price. Looking at the INCREASING prices of filters AND shipping I actually SAVED BIG! I had $385.00 saved in the budget for filters so yes, technically I overspent from the budget but in the end, I actually saved through my research, price shopping AND NEGIOTATION on my part!! I asked for a better price by buying bulk and this company worked with me.

It also has a lot to do with marketing. When I primarily shopped at Target, I always bought unnecessary items. After switching to Walmart, I noticed that I wasn't doing it anymore.

I noticed that when the Walmart 2 miles from my house closed and I would have to drive about 8 miles to the nearest Walmart that I even. stopped shopping at Walmart because I always would compute the cost of gas and my time. I now shop at a local grocery store that is more expensive. I spend less because I keep my menus mostly the same boring basic food. Variety is not a big priority.

@@Joce123 This reminds me of something someone I know said years ago that really stuck with me. She said she shopped at the smaller grocery store, even though it was a bit more expensive. Why? Her time was valuable too. She could be there faster and because it was a smaller store, she could be in and out faster. Sometimes we forget the "time is money" adage.

One thing I will do for kids raising money for a school trip, etc that they have to raise $XXX amount their self is to pass on buying that $15 pie BUT I give them $5 towards the amount they need to raise.

I have a huge family when ever I was out and about if I saw something that was perfect for someone for a ridiculous low price i would buy it seal the bag with the persons name inside and put in a special place in my closet. Then there was no huge hit during the holidays. My couch was purchased in the early 2000's and only because the one I had was "shot" (when you sat down you were basically folded in half) i checked to see how much it would cost vs a new one. I put the old one on my deck and made $20 on a couch that was free to begin with (mil gave us her old one when she got a new one) when some college kids knocked on my door and asked if they could have it for $20. Lol Wait for sales on clothes etc right after holidays and before inventory - this happens about twice a year and most store managers will tell you if inventory is comming up. The sales are usually crazy good right before because they don't want to have to count them 😂.

Sometimes the Lord calls us to give more than what we put in the fund. I say always keep your heart open to that. ✝️❤️ Right now we're supporting a brigade in the Golan heights and Messianic Fellowship in Jerusalem through Moriel Ministries They have thermal socks and some other items. There are lots of Messianic IDF that share the gospel. We support that 100%

In our Province (Ontario) you need a Masters to teach…regardless of what level of education you want to teach! Lots of great advice🥰

Interesting. In the US, you need an undergrad in education and you need to pass an additional exam to have your teaching certificate. If you want to teach at the community college, you need at least your Masters - but most instructors (even at community colleges) have their PhD.

"It won't be cheaper next week" and "I'll save gas by not making more trips". (30 miles round trip to store) Kittyfood by the case, 12 at a time for 5 cats. Litter150 lbs at a time. 3 X/yr. They are good mousers for their dessert. DRive past garage sales "none of that is for me, allll of that is for someone else who Neeeeeds it." Councelling IS medical. Emotional well being: Time with my darling, teaching favorite skills. Garden. Kitties. Thing Shepherd: find someone who needs random things I'm given for that purpose: furniture, appliances, food, stacks of egg cartons, "old" computers, wiring, lumber and pipes, clothes, blankets, glassware, frames, PLANTS, encouragement.

When it comes to a Masters, one thing you have to look at is whether or not you will get paid to be a teaching assistant or research assistant. Both my husband and I got our Masters degrees with no money out of pocket. We received tuition and a stipend. We were employees of the University. It did not matter that we decided to home school and live on one income. The education was an asset in teaching our children as well as interacting with other professionals. It gave us tools for life. Frankly in some subjects, if you can’t get an assistantship, you probably aren’t at the level that you’d need to be anyway… Additionally many corporations will pay for their employees to get further education- like an MBA for example, so you’d be better off entering the workforce and then pursuing it. Grad school is a bit different experience from undergrad even if you continue straight into it. There are social opportunities, but it is more serious business.

So many RNs went for further degrees and stayed working on the hospital floor….same as the Associate degree nurses…. then landed up with big education expenses and not making any more $ than the ADN nurses. Today, many new nurses leave within their first 5 years. Also, many find they don’t care for nursing but can’t leave because of the educational debt they have.

RE: Masters degree for a teacher: many states REQUIRE a masters degree (I had 10 years to earn mine). Yes, you are paid more, teachers are paid "on step." Also when comparing school systems to work in, ask when interviewing, whether or not they offer tuition reimbursement. I only worked in 2 school systems, the second one would reimburse me for classes taken (had a minumum grade requirement) equal to what in state university tuition was. I chose to attend a state University so was fully reimbursed for tuition paid. Some school systems will advance a teacher over to a new column for salary once 1/2 of the degree is earned. All questions to pursue.

Getting a master's degree is not necessary I'd say. Unless you want to go into the academic field, you know exactly which specialism/field you are aiming for, and you have a very specific end goal, knowing you'll need this degree for the job you want. If not, get your bachelor's, get a job, (it's what I did), and see where that gets you. If you just rush into a Master studies right after your Bachelor's without clear guidance for yourself, you might be wasting a lot of time, money and effort you might not have needed to spend. (not to mention the student loan debts... oof)

Totally agree with the limit on extracurricular activities for kids. First, it’s hit or miss what they’re going to like. When I was growing up we were limited to two. And if my parents paid for it, we had to finish it for the year. But kids today tend to be super overloaded on activities. And I think it’s a lot of pressure on parents to keep up with the Joneses of school extras. Even if you have the money, is it really that necessary to spend it on those things?

Yes, and all the expenses for sports clubs like traveling, and all the time it takes. It really adds up. I think we have to remember these are EXTRA not necessary things and not to worry too much about doing them.

About those things you want to buy and feel a need to buy - Think about how often you will use them, will they save or cost money on the end (and how much), and is it actually worth it to your soul if its more of a want. For example there was a time we honestly looked at buying a paint gun for painting house exteriors the day we returned a Home Depo rental later than the 4 hour time slot on a day we did not have 8 to 24 hours to devote to painting. The price wasnt cheap and yet we were looking at painting 3 houses between ours, family, and friend while each of us were working our 9-5 jobs. In the 6 weeks we pondered, thought, rented, amd decided to buy we decided to buy what was apparently promo was gone resulting in the paint gun we were looking at almost doubling in cost and a lesser replacement at the price point we had been looking at. In the end, we decided to keep renting and instead alter our schedules etc...to maximize paint gun rental charges. The gun we originally looked at at the price point it had been would have been about the same only semi-hopeful rental costs amd we would own the thing in the end. But, it would also had allowed us to be much less fuss free with respect to scheduling. We weren't volunteering by gosh but at the original cost, if we would have gone on to help paint a 4th house we would clearly have had saved money over renting. At double the cost, we decided not to.

LOVE this video, Hope and Larry. I have a question. I have found as I get older, I prefer veg and fruit over junk food and even some meats. Do you feel any different/healthier since you do eat vegan and do you feel better eating more organic. We have bought some organic eggs and meat, but it is extremely expensive. To me, there is no difference in taste, but if we are healthier (and the chickens and cattle are), I'm all for that.

@@UndertheMedian My state (Maryland) requires all teachers to have their Masters within 5 year from when they start teaching. That said, if you use one of the programs they sponsor, it’s almost free. The county gives you $600 towards books but classes are reimbursed if you get a B or higher. And if your class start time means you have to leave work early, they cover the missed time. Our state always needs teachers (avoid Prince George’s Co.). Salaries start at $46,000 -$60,000. If he is considering a position anywhere, he should set up a comparison chart for different counties or school districts. Health insurance, other benefits and hours can vary greatly.

A few years ago I was blessed with a good massage therapist that did deep tissue massage. It helped me so much to have a monthly visit. Sadly, she was forced to retire and I have not been able to find a replacement.

My son started high school band and it was very hard to budget because they just kept throwing out expenses that we unexpected. My son said he was sorry we couldn’t afford it and I was like it isn’t about whether we can afford it but it is literally never in the budget and it is always an emergency. It baffles me that this doesn’t bother other people but we don’t leave that much flexibility in our budget for those unplanned non necessities. Maybe we will be better prepared next year to know what is coming to plan for it.

There's always kids collecting for band. Be bold and ask the director exactly how much a year's involvement costs so you'll have a clue FIRST. They tend to just surprize parents with "incidental" costs that add up WAY toooo fast.

As a retired teacher who always budgeted, I would question teachers who made supply lists look like Christmas wish lists for the rich, and they would look at me with derision. I would always question why we had to each have our own requirements for the class. In middle school, I told them a binder notebook separating all classes, loose leaf paper, and pens/pencils. That is 99 percent of what should be needed, as teachers get some funds to buy materials for the students. But yet they buy crazy stuff instead of the every day stuff. Can you tell I don't miss the profession?

I also have a wonderful masseuse that’s worth every penny. I sit for long periods of time in my job and there’s a lot of strain on my neck, shoulders, back and legs (court stenographer), so to me, it’s money well spent.

Pick ONE activity for after school. Dive into it and give it the best effort. This leaves time for homework, house chores and just staring out the window, which is more important than people give credit. Repeat after me: "I heavily support my own charities".

Sometimes it pays to wait for a better sale. A training course I wanted to take was on sale through end of Oct. I held off because I wasn't sure yet if that was a direction that would work for me. Nov 1st it was an even bigger discount. Also for train and education, explore your options. See what is or isn't included. I am leaning towards a more expensive course because if their responsiveness to inquiries and their program includes a reaume and job search assistance.

For generosity. I have a goal of 3 charity projects a year, sometimes 4. For example, the church I went to collected new shoes during the summer to give to needy children before school started, I liked giving and participating in that. Also I have a neighbor that has about 6 kids, her last 2, the twins, are just a bit younger than my little one, so when he grows out of his clothes I give them to her.

Great comments, adding another: window shop. Do not buy. Do not keep all payment methods on the phone; just one. Delight in the shopping but don't buy. It's tough practice. If you can't, then you really don't want any cards on your phone... Shopping for me is a fun session but, I will futurefaje outfits for events that will be unlikely. I'm selling quite a bit past purchases and that's keeping me really skeptical about my choices of spending too. Does this purchase really fit a use in my life or is it clutter?

If you want activities for children, consider your parks and recreation department. They offer classes, sports, lessons and activities. Many offer summer day camps and swimming lessons. Schools frequently offer clubs that cost you nothing and even have school buses to drop them off. You don’t need travel leagues to get a well rounded child. For us the goal was fun, exercise and teamwork. And for music between the school teacher and free online lessons that should cover the vast majority of children. You can fund them with a moneymaking effort. If you are looking for scholarships, know that (about 95%) more money is available based on need and academic achievements of B and better. Teach them to apply for scholarships, that skill will help them throughout their lives. If you are thinking a sports scholarship know that many go away if your child is injured and only about .005 of students at a high school get a partial or full scholarship sport scholarship.

A masters degree will give you more per month on your pension. You get paid more while working and during retirement with a masters degree. You are doing the same job and you might as well get the extra money. It will help pay insurance during retirement.

Although I have heard of Good RX for prescriptions, sometimes your individual pharmacies have their own "card" for discounts, but they do not advertise it, you have to ask. My local Giant Eagle enabled me to get a $6,000 prescription for $47.47, really!
