I choose to believe that whenever Brandon sees a whiteboard he is compelled to explain how some variety of AK works. #akgnotficationsquad

Trivia: In 60's to 80's Romania, the civilian "Patriotic Guard" was equipped with semi-auto AKs (so they won't be able to compete with military in case of an unrest). Those still had the "auto-sear" in place, as a "safety sear", but they didn't have the middle "Auto" dimple stamped on the metal. Well, you could still stop the selector manually in that position, and that would be "Auto". To deal with that, the little square tab/flag of the selector (min 13:21), had a piece cut out of the left side it (left arrow in the video), so it would not be ever be able to stop the disconnector from rotating. That way it was safer than the AKs that are sold now in US as semi-auto. To convert one of those AKs to full auto would require just replacing that selector. Ah, and yes, those AKs were tightly guarded and controlled, no personal use was allowed. Even the bullets were accounted for and you didn't get more than like 3 at once. That didn't change after +40 years from fall of communism.

So succinctly you need four things: 1) a full auto/safety sear drilled and pinned 2) a channel cut in the receiver rail for the sear to pass through 3) a "tab" on the carrier to trip the sear 4) a hammer that has a hook/notch on the bottom to accept the sear This is all very straightforward and amazingly simple. Now out of sheer curiosity I'm going to check my romanian kit build's carrier when I get home and compare it to my Saiga .223. Thanks for the educational video! As a machinist it was quite intruiging!

That bit about selector switch design isn't fuddlore, we were taught that exact same thing in the Finnish army where we use the RK-62, Finnish copy of the AK.

This is why this gun is so reliable bc everything fits so perfectly and each thing does multiple jobs at once helping its comrades

Mine is a full auto bolt carrier group thanks Brandon I did not know how to tell and mine has that exact channel. Mines degenerated but has that Chanel in the bolt carrier so Mine was full auto it bow has semi auto sear. But My bolt carrier is a full auto bolt carrier I was trying to get history on My gun and now I know thanks to You video. Peace and God bless.

When you are lucky enough to have served in the military that still has AKs in inventory so you could see all of this in person directly

13:53 fun fact, you should take a look in to the SIG 550 (or the swiss Sturmgewehr 90 short stgw 90) it has lots of similarities with the AK! It was my military rifle and i kept it after the service, unfortunately now it is no more full auto :(

I figured out how to make a rpk full auto with a hand drill and a dremel in a shack in the guatemalan jungle, I had a bastard of a time with dremeling out the rail for the auto sear to clear, and I had to take out the trigger group twice to figure out the orientation of the rate reducer's spring, wish I had this video to watch back then (Disclaimer- No I was not licensed to do this in any way, I did not do this at home, I did this in another country)

But just a idea here on a follow up video to this one, but could you do a video on the legal jargon of manufacturing of say an AK post 86 "Hughes" B.S like what FFL is required as well as S.O.Ts And what requirements need to acquire said license maybe an LLC is needed? Just stripped my two AKs down to check the tab on the bolt carrier. Interestingly the PSA has the “full auto” tab and the Draco is missing the little dip.

I’ve actually never seen an AK before but this video actually made a lot of sense. Personally I don’t understand the AK vs. AR argument, if it goes pew then what does it matter?

Okay, pausing at 2:30 because I want to post my theory on how full auto works (how I've always assumed it worked) before it's explained. Ok, so I've always assumed that in much the same way the gas generated by the round pushed back the bolt so the spent casing can be removed by the ejector system, and the spring in the mag then pushes a new round in its place, with the bolt now being reset for the next shot... When a firearm is set to full auto on the selector switch, the bolt isn't just 'reset'. It slams home to fire another round, starting the process over again until the trigger is released or there's no more rounds and the bolt is either held open by the empty mag if it's an open bolt design, or closed if it isn't because there's no more rounds exploding in the breech to generate the requisite gas to push the bolt back again. I've always assumed that when you set the selector to semi, there's some kind of 'catch' that doesn't allow the bolt to slam home without another squeeze of the trigger, burst fire having some other kind of mechanical catch that lets the bolt slam home a set amount of times per squeeze, and full auto moves said catches out of the way entirely. I'm probably WAY off, but that's basically how I'd design full auto... Let the gas do the work as usual. Now to see how vastly incorrect I was because I live in fucking Maryland which has gun laws that have been called "unconstitutional". We're like one step above Commiefornia.

Im surprised during the whole force reset trigger craze no one made a FRT for the AK, there was 5 companies making AR FRT's, supposedly TAC-COM did but I have not been any information on it.

I am a Dutchie and served in Afghanistan as a combat medic along US finest. I never fired an AK then.... Today that changed. My wife had to travel to Miami for work and I went to Lock & Load and got to fire an AK. Because of you, and Tarkov. I went one mag semi auto for accuracy and one mag full auto. Fuck me, full auto goes hard. No accuracy whatsoever but SO MUCH FUN!! I completely understand why you're THE AK guy. Fantastic and powerful firearm. I wish the Netherlands had a 2nd ammendment... 🥲 Guess we have to migrate 😄
