They didn't redo these episodes to make the dub uncensored, they simultaneously made a censored and uncensored version of the dub. This is the biggest thing that Funimation did right that 4Kids did wrong- Funimation provided OPTIONS. There was a kid-friendly version made for strict TV networks (as short lived as it was), and an uncut version for the DVD release. Had 4Kids released an uncut version, I doubt many people would have had such a big problem with them. Now, granted, the edits 4Kids made involved cutting out huge chunks of the story and making bizarre alterations that don't even really make sense, so they probably couldn't have released an uncensored version if they wanted to. After all, 4Kids DID try to do that with Yugioh, and they basically had to redo all of the episodes from scratch. It just shows that Funimation's method was better on an inherent level. Funimation obviously had to do a lot of edits in One Piece and a lot of them were fairly rough, but they kept those edits to the minimum that the TV network required, which allowed them to make two versions a lot more easily.
@@DylanYoshithey made their dubs for cable and didn't (for the most part) heavily modify dubs to a crazy degree like 4kids adding puns, removing Japanese music etc.
Plus, there were some name changes that Funimation probably only made to the edited version in order to be consistent with changes that 4Kids had already made that much of the audience was already familiar with. Maybe they would've still needed to call them cursed fruits in the edited version, but they certainly had no other reason to make the same mistake 4Kids did with the ship's name or changing Ace's name to Trace.
so early Funimation was basically what 4kids should've been doing from the start, still censoring but not replacing what they censor with stupid stuff like lolipops or spring loaded hammers
At least they still kept something in Sanji's mouth. It worked better to add than to remove entirely and the lollipop looked rather cool. So bugger off. Also, Funimation removed quite a bit of scenes 4Kids would have kept but changed some things in them like the pirates drinking. 4Kids would have changed the drinks, not removed the scenes or characters from the scene entirely. Funimation also removed the drinks entirely from certain scenes they didn't cut whereas 4Kids would have just recolored them and displayed them as something else, which is better than nothing at all.
I actually mostly watch the Funi-Dub of OP, and hadn't realized they did a censored tv edit, but thinking about that makes a lot of sense. SO glad uncensored exists.
No, it's more that television itself has changed. Nowadays, they are much less restricted with the more relaxed rating systems available on streaming sites like Crunchyroll (and can even make certain shows age-restricted if necessary). If they were still airing it on network or cable TV, many (albeit not all of them) of the same kinds of edits would still be needed unless they were airing it late at night with a TV-14 rating such as on Cartoon Network's old Adult Swim block.
tbf the reason this change was made wasn't necessarily 4kids fault in the Manga his name was translated to Zolo sometimes translating certain things to English from Japanese causes them to be weird with "L" and "R" other examples of translation errors in the manga are Eneru's name was mistranslated to Enel, and Alabasta was mistranslated to Arabasta, and Reverie was mistranslated to Levely

I would watch a few episodes and then watch your videos covering them and then a few more episodes and then one of your videos untill skypea. The 4kids names were kept because of the fact this dub came out 1 week after 4kids and cartoon network and toei animation wanted people watching week to week not get confused
I started watching One Piece back in September, and I've been watching these changes videos alongside them. It's funny seeing all of the changes that 4Kids made (I can't get over the Boogie-Woogie scene from the Alabasta Arc), and I'm interested to see what else Funimation initially changed when they got the One Piece license. Keep up the great work! By the way, I just finished the Jaya arc this week, and let me tell ya, seeing Luffy punch Bellamy in the face was satisfying as heck!
20:55 fun fact about L and R in other languages: in Germany Luffy is called Ruffy with an English pronunciation. If I remember correctly, this character is called Raffit as well.
I believe this was back when One Piece was still on Cartoon Network. After 4kids ended, Funimation took over, but still had to edit stuff out for the channel it's on. Eventually, Funimation brought back the original animation for the dub and re-recorded lines to match the show's intended rating. If I recall correctly, Skypiea was the first arc recorded for the official dub!
That's because, like others said, it isn't -- THIS dub was only for the television broadcast (meaning smoking & booze HAD to be censored) and was required to maintain continuity with the older 4Kids dub. Later, Funimation went back to redub the first two seasons and clean up the third ("pickups" in voice acting terms) for the uncut DVD's and, later, its own website (now merged with Crunchyroll).
To give credit where credit is due, had 4kids kept dubbing One Piece up to that point then they likely would’ve kept in all the alcohol and gun scenes, only having them be recolored
I preferred 4kids’ lollipop approach to censoring the cigarette. It was less intrusive to the animation, and still fit Sanji’s character well enough. Funimation had to edit Sanji’s whole arm out of frame often or even cut shots of him holding it up to his face.
Notice how fast this episode is in comparison to literally everything before it. Shows FUNImation's care and respect when editing to the original source material and there jump in skill since the '99 Funi dub of DBZ which to me, suffered the same issues a lot of 4kids productions did of it not caring for the original vision of the show.

I don't know why I read that you referring to the actual SHOW'S episodes and how their editing helped the pacing of the story like maybe when they removed scenes but then 4Kids did the same and even to a larger extent cutting out whole arcs to keep things moving, haha. Yeah, Funimation did less edits because their standards for what can be shown to kids is different and they weren't too restricted or hell bent on censoring so much which was typical for them at the time. Of course, 4Kids' edits got better by the end of their tenure with the show when they were initially airing the show on Fox Kids. After the move to Toonami, they got less censor crazy, but this was more towards the end because they already had episodes heavily edited that aired on Toonami that was initially set to air on Fox Kids. The change of networks came after they already did a huge batch of episodes that didn't air yet. If they knew in advance at let's say episode 30 that the show would regularly air on Toonami, then episode 31 and onward may have been edited less heavy and maybe even some of the arcs might not have been skipped. But even Funimation made some bizarre edit choices removing whole scenes due to drinks when 4Kids would leave them in and just change the drink color and call it something else. Eh, it's a weird thing this dubbing business.
14:14 this was the one and only episode I saw of the censored 4Kids dub and the toothpick scene was so bizarre out of context because it has nothing to do with anything going on in the scene, I don't think he was eating at the time. It's weird that they went the extra mile for something like that, but it stuck with me ever since.
20:39 - One thing I really find funny/strange about that edit is that 4Kids KEPT the scene where Mihawk slashes Zoro/Zolo largely intact, and yet all they did was censor the blood. Apparently a man getting (bloodlessly) slashed across the chest is perfectly fine in the 4Kids dub, and yet the edited Funi dub had to tone that down.
0:07 Actually, the 4kids wasn’t the first English dub for One Piece. Odex dub in Singapore was the first One Piece English dub before 4kids and Funimation got.
These episodes of the edited Funimation dub were super hard to find, we could only find the uncut versions of the episodes. Good thing there is someone who recorded the edited episodes and archived them online. Now I can finally see and hear some of the differences between the two funimation dubs.
my friend was there for these episodes, and that's what fully got him into the series w/ Blackbeard's speech. The following couple of years he had spent getting me into the series proper until I finally caved, even watching the current episodes at the time. And then, in spring break 2010, I had binged all of Water 7 & Enies Lobby...my life has never been the same & I wouldn't have it any other way.
Honestly it seems like most of the dialogue and plot has been kept intact, this would have been a pretty decent way of watching one piece as a kid,. I remember catching 1 or 2 episodes on tv of funis dub and enjoyed it, even led me to watch the uncut version once it came out on dvd.

One Piece isn't a money maker in the West. Otakus love One Piece but a company dubbing One Piece loses money. This goes for other countries doing One Piece dubs. They had to cancel it. Its not big outside Japan no matter how many angry Otakus post about it
You got your info mixed up Funimation did'nt stop dubbing the show they just pulled it off Toonami. Obviously we can only speculate as to why but I'd imagine it was just getting too frustrating for them and pulling it would let them do it from scratch without the 4kids baggage. However it happened it was the best decision they made and now the dub is almost caught up to the japanse version.
We had the uncensored version from the first episode here. So, i'm happy my country wasn't shy on this (Even if TOEI is, as the manga is more violent than the uncensored version)
Feels like people are losing the thread here that these were only TV edits for Cartoon Network in the late 00s. None of the home or digital releases have visual edits (beyond episode names/credits), and of course, Funi's dub is a lot more accurate to the JP version than 4kids
Funi tried, they really tried to get One Piece back in 2003, but 4Kids ended up with it… and they didn't even WANT it! OP was part of a Toei package deal with 4Kids's actual goals: Kinnikuman (Ultimate Muscle) and Tokyo Mew Mew!
I think being a smoking pirate at sea would be like really bad cause smoking in real life is an addiction and you woukd have a really bad time suffering from cigarette withdraw even in the safety of your own home much less the open ocean
@@RantNavvTalksAnime Thanks, also in Latin America we are delayed with the FUNi dub but we have an uncut dub on 2020, now that dub it’s on Gyojin island arc (or that in where the fakes appear) and with the recent episodes (but not Zou or Wholecake arcs), we also got the 4Kids dub and thanks to that 4Kids wasn’t successful in Latin America
See, people get at 4Kids for the edits they made, but Funimation did some that's pretty bizarre. Funimation also removed the drinks entirely from certain scenes they didn't cut whereas 4Kids would have just recolored them and displayed them as something else, which is better than nothing at all. They also removed a scene shown towards the end where a character STEPS on another's back? Why was that cut? I think even 4Kids would have left that in since it's not terribly violent that depicts any severe brutality. So you see, Funimation wasn't all sunshine and colors with their edits either.
It doesn’t matter at the end of the day. While Funimation is not perfect but it still infinite times than the 4Kids one. Funimation edits only happen when it on Cartoon Network and where 4Kids left off and still better than 4Kids one. Also unlike 4Kids, Funimation give us uncut and unedited English dub like the Japanese version and if you don’t like the dub then you can watch the Japanese dub but they both are identical. 4Kids change a lot of things including remove or skip episodes, horrible voice acting, and they replaced the original soundtrack with their own and it terrible. Yet you okay with 4Kids dub.
@@bootis32 Yes because I can see the gem in it with their elements I consider superior than Funimation with their bland charm voices and need to be so faithful to the original. 4Kids at least had fun with the show and brought their own style to it. It should have been better but you're a clown not to see the positives it still had. Funimation did way too much trying to dub and redub everything which was more work than needed. All they needed to do was make one dub and again, some of their edited changes were changes not even 4Kids would have made. Deal with it and get out of my face you washed up lap dog.
@@bootis32 As if 4Kids wanted to take their time dubbing over a show twice. They were not gonna do that. They tried that when they were doing those uncut Yu-Gi-Oh and Shaman King dubs and of course probably thought this was valuable time and resources they just didn't want to blow through that could be used to handle a fresh show. Having different dubs can also leave to confusion. Funimation's issues doing that is they didn't know when to quit and kept redubbing especially with Dragonball. UGH. Hard to keep track of the dub side of things there. As far as skipping arcs go, while a risk of 4Kids doing that and I don't agree with, I understand it especially given how long the show has gotten now. I bet Funimation wishes they could skip some filler nonsense. As far as their own dub was concerned, Funimation was best just doing the show over from scratch and perhaps they wouldn't be so far behind as they've been. 4Kids' dub is alright if you ignore the original and see some good elements in it. 4Kids was often good at their voice acting and their music scores were always top notch so don't you hate on it because you want to love the original unedited nonsense so much. There is still elements of charm that can be detected in their One Piece dub that many choose to ignore or be ignorant of out of spite of everything else they don't like. Boy bye. YES I like the 4Kids version even with their faults, so you better get it straight.

It must've been so annoying to keep consistency with the 4kids dub, it was no secret even then how much people hated it and Funimation was being forced to not change too much. Especially when you consider the show was already airing on Toonami, you know the same block where they aired Dragon ball z uncensored. The decision to finally pull it so they can start fresh was the smartest thing they did.

This dub is so fascinating because while it's got a number of changes to keep consistent with 4Kids' version of the show, it's also VASTLY less-censored than 4Kids' version and seems to have a lot more edits done simply for the sake of time. Which makes sense when you consider that this broadcast has the full OPs and EDs, and Cartoon Network only had 21-minute timeslots while One Piece episodes are 24 minutes long. Heck, this version even has multiple episodes broadcast with a TV-PG or TV-PG-V rating, while 4Kids was consistently under a TV-Y7-FV.
The edited Funimation airing getting a TV PG rating made no sense to me since they still edited hand to hand combat, removed blood, and re-recorded mentions of death. All this kind of stuff with kept in the TV PG airing of Naruto
@@Drums_of_Liberation I hate Vic with a passion (yes it's for stuff he did that I personally saw, not just bandwagon), but I cannot hate his version of "We Are!" or his minor character performances in One Piece. That said, Jerry Jewell has a better singing voice. Shame the broadcast version has such inferior lyrics. I'd love to hear the Mike/Vic lyrics with Jerry's vocals.

The scheduling between the last of the 4Kids dub to the start of the Funimation one in September 2007 was always baffling to me because you think they would have given the show a break in between so audiences can take time to prepare for the change than being throw into it just a week later. Tekking101 did a video years saying how it was jarring for him when the change happened because one week earlier you had the 4Kids dub presented one way and then the next episode a week later you had a different voice cast, theme song, music, etc. and I'm sure others were taken aback by this so break between dubs was needed. This was the case for Pokemon and that also had a network change too so folks had time and a new platform to transition into the change. But given how botched the 4Kids dub of One Piece was, I wouldn't have even bothered continuing the dub. I would have let the show go on hiatus for a few months, maybe a year and then brought it back to TV starting from scratch, meaning Funimation's episodes would air from the first episode and go on from there rather than trying to pick up where 4Kids left off. No one thought to do that so they felt like they HAD to continue and it makes sense, but 4Kids had skipped so much and censored very heavy that Funimation wouldn't be obligated to do which would have made the consistency between dubs look off so it was best if they had just started from scratch entirely and let the 4Kids dub be its own thing and a thing in the past that just didn't work out. Connecting Funimation's version to the past kind of hurt the TV run because people were already burnt out by the changes 4Kids did. So their version could have been marketed as a "new take" on the show to see from the beginning and it likely would have fared better and not be cancelled since this would be taken as its own thing with more to look forward to. It would be similar to when Funimation did the uncut Dragonball Z of the first 52 episodes that aired on Toonami in 2005. The circumstances behind that was different since the DBZ dub was still a hit even edited the way it was miraculously and this was more-so a bonus for Funimation to do those episodes with their newer cast. But why they didn't think to do with One Piece to the extent I'm describing is beyond me and a missed opportunity to truly give the show it's TV rebranding it needed than being left to market through periodic DVD releases.

My point is, Funimation should have simply started over with episode 1 "uncut" and went on from there rather than continue where 4Kids left off if they were already gonna do the show uncut from the beginning anyway. @@bluebaron6858 Yeah, which made the whole continuation thing meaningless at the end of the day and then the show got the reboot treatment anyway. I think if TOONAMI had issued the reboot from jump and gave it a nice hiatus from 4Kids' last episode to let people ease into the new version, then the show might have done better airing-wise. After three years of people enduring the 4Kids dub and not liking it, what did they expect was gonna happen by the 2007-08 season?

What they actually did was simultaneously create both dubs. When they were recording all the lines for the show, whenever there was a necessary line change for the TV version, they made the actors do those lines twice one for TV and one for DVD. That way they wouldn’t have to re-dub Skypia and Jaya once the DVD releases of those arcs came out.
@@SuperGalaxy That doesn't mean there weren't pickups once it came time years later for the Skypeia DVD sets to come out. Maybe it's the sound quality, but I recall the acting in the uncut version being MUCH better even though it's the same actors at the same time -- I can certainly imagine the Funi voice actors rolling their eyes at the required censorship + continuity BS and not putting in as much effort with the broadcast scripts.
Not recent. This was back in 2007-2008 -- Funimation recorded the broadcast and uncut dubs at the same time (absent _maybe_ some pickups when it came time to dub the last 15 episodes of Season 3 for the DVD sets)
From what I've heard, there was a One Piece video game dubbed by 4kids that featured some Skypiea characters in it which was released _before_ Funimation dubbed this arc, so some of the name changes in this broadcast version were made to match that game.
I remember first watching this dub, and surprised that 1. Nami said crap in the first episodes of jaya and 2. Showing off namis hot cleavage in her bikini
At the time 4Kids got the show, the copyright for Zorro hadn't been settled (it has now -- Zorro is public domain) so it was to avoid drawing the anger of a holding company KNOWN for bullsh!t lawsuits
Okay, so I've been able to pretty easily find a torrent file of every single 4kids episode of One Piece, but I cannot for the life of me find any of the full episodes of the TV version of the Skypiea arc. The best I can find are a handful of short clips on youtube, but I have never been able to find any full episodes.
Definitely better than what 4kids attempted to do, but still shit imo. Most of the changes are so rapid and difficult to perceive that they could’ve just ignored them, considering the attention span of a kid watching dudes beating each other out. Besides many kids in other countries had to watch the uncut version and didn’t suffer any consequences. But yeah whatever, it’s still clear what they wanted to do.
Anyone who has watched and listened to these edited dubbed voice lines shouldn’t even think about having an opinion on what kinda show One Piece really is
It's probably just me but... These days, it just feels like Toonami is just airing and repeating what we already seen online or in streaming. Knowing whats popular and what will work. Back then, we would be pleasantly surprised letting them decide what to show us, and tailoring it up made it feel more like "their own show" and creating a special line up and experience for us americans, be it Paranoia Agent or Inuyasha. In a way, this was the "definitive" weekly anime watching experience for us american kids and teens in the early 2000s, still unbeknownst of what japan had in stores for us. (Something I'm almost starting to miss). (Granted, I agree we should have had the less edited funimation version in the first place.)
I'm surprised that 4kids and funimation would cencered alot of it I'm glad it did didn't come out here in uk when I was a kid so did funimation continue the contract until its over so they can re dub it again
I find it so odd that Funimation still censored the anime even after saying they wouldn't. An odd set of episodes to continue to censor then finally not in the next art. Were these perhaps leftover episodes that 4Kids had? I don't know where the english dub is today concerning the series as I only watch in Japanese
They took over the licence and likely had duties to keep the dub running on Cartoon Network until the contract with Cartoon Network finished. They picked the dub up from where the 4Kids ended and tried to keep some consistency while making edits for broadcast timing and restrictions.
And they did stay true to their word that they wouldn't. This was worked on simultaneously with their DVD release, which was fully uncensored. They couldn't air it on TV without conforming to the network's standards, but they never intended for that to be the sole or preferred version of the show- Releasing an uncut version was always their top priority, continuing where 4Kids left off on children's television was a secondary goal.
