If you live in an old house, they do have reset-able fuses you can screw in, you just push the bottom on it, and you can reset it just like a modern circuit breaker.

When a circuit breaker trips you shouldn't just "turn it back on and you're back in business" without first determining if you are overloading the circuit by having too many things plugged in and turned on.
@PanamaSticks
@PanamaSticks 3 года назад
YES! Otherwise you will be recycling the breaker many times and it will eventually eithe start nuisance tripping at a lower than normal current, or WORSE, hang up, and NOT trip. Yes, it happens.

I was wondering about this. Thanks for pointing it out. Would you happen to know what other issues could be taking place besides overloading? Thanks.

I remember reading somewhere that MCBs can stick (though very rare) while a fuse will always burn when overloaded or if a short circuit occurs.
@Marcel_Germann

If a circuit breaker fails the normal way it will always fail the other way, meaning it will trip without any reason. If the contacts inside stick together like welded means that the circuit breaker wasn't dimensioned correctly in the meaning of the PSSC (prospective short circuit current). The standard circuit breaker can handle and break a short-circuit current of 6kA or 10kA. So you'll have to measure the ground-loop impedance and calculate the PSSC and choose the proper circuit breaker. They're labeled that way, in addition to their tripping current: American circuit breaker, labeled with 10kA: images.homedepot-static.com/productImages/25c1627e-cb19-4e0f-bec6-dd7ce1ecb1ef/svn/eaton-2-pole-breakers-chf230-64_1000.jpg European circuit breaker, 10000 below the B16: willrose-electrical.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/EMBH116-1-1.jpg

NO! A breaker with worn parts due to many resets can HANG UP, and fail to trip. That one time may burn down your house.
@PanamaSticks
@PanamaSticks 3 года назад
Breaking current refers to the ability of the contacts to separate and resist an arc which would jump the connection, as with inductive loads. There remains the problem with the mechanical parts (pivot points, etc.) hanging up.

@Engineer9736
@Engineer9736 6 лет назад
Vape Maniac I assume your wire is 1cm long and not 1cm diameter.. The diameter is what determines the max amount of amps that can go through it. 1cm diameter wire can handle hundreds of amps and thus something like 24000 watts at 240v. But don’t mess with it if you don’t know such stuff. House on fire in the middle of the night is no fun.

This is the first MCB that I have seen that is purely thermal not thermal magnetic as described. reducing its usefulness in short circuit conditions as it would operate slower and is less able to extinguish the arc.

boy oh boy..could I use some Electrical help. I live in a house built 1968..all aluminum wiring. Various places throughout the house just stopped working. I've checked the circuit breakers...none were tripped. I guess it is possible that the wires pooped out. If that's the case, then there is fire risk..I would imagine. Is the only solution to rewire the house? How long does that take and how expensive would it be? 3Br 2bath single level house. I know that the housing codes have changed around here in the last 15 years..and I think I would need to re-do the wiring in order to be up to code to sell it.
@Sparky-ce9yy
@Sparky-ce9yy 6 лет назад
Parmesana not necessarily it needs to be inspected by a licensing electrician. It's not necessarily the wireing that is dangerous, it's what's connected to the aluminum wiring. 🚨 also if the breaker panel has the name "Federal Pacific" on it you're in bigger trouble.

Aluminium conductors got several flaws: 1. It's not as flexible as copper, if you bent them too much the conductors will break. Copper can break too, but aluminium can break much easier. It's brittle. 2. It can carry less current than a copper wire of the same dimension. 3. Connections will loosen over time, especially screw-type terminals must be tightened from time to time. 4. You need a special contact lubricant to prevent corrosion on the aluminium conductors. The only advantages over copper are that cables are lighter and cheaper than copper wires. But in case of a house wiring that doesn't really make that much difference, especially for the reason you need bigger cables for the same demand. Aluminium conductors must be at least one size larger than copper conductors, for the same demand.
@workingshlub8861
@workingshlub8861 6 лет назад
call an electrician right away...aluminum wire can be bad news and chances are people fooled with it over the years..the terminations need to be done correctly for starters.

Don't fool yourself about circuit breakers, they are mechanical devices prone to mechanical issues, especially the hardening of grease in the breaker used for lubrication of the mechanical linkages. This is why it is important that when you change the batteries in you smoke detector, go around and exercise the breakers and trip your GFCI's to ensure they are working.

Less Resistance causes a fuse to blow. error
@RobertLeBlancPhoto
@RobertLeBlancPhoto 6 лет назад
anton1949 Ohm’s law states that as long as voltage remains constant, as resistance decreases, current increases. When current attempts to pass through a fuse or breaker that exceeds the protection rating, then it will blow or trip. So, the statement of low resistance causes fuse to blow can indeed be correct.
@anton1949
@anton1949 6 лет назад
That's what I said, The speaker said more resistance causes a fuse to blow, that's in error.
@Arieeeee
@Arieeeee 6 лет назад
I caught that too. Resistance PREVENTS current, not increase it.
@Marcel_Germann
@Marcel_Germann 6 лет назад
In this case it's right, he meant the strip inside of the fuse. This strip is a bottleneck and will heat up, if it gets to hot over a longer period of time it will melt. In case of short-circuit it can proverbial desintegrate in a small explosion, depending on the impedance of the wires and how high the short-circuit current is. The lower the rating of the fuse is the smaller and high resistive the strip inside of the fuse is, and the larger the fuse is the larger the strip is inside of the fuse and less resistive. And you're right in the case of the low resistance, that's between the different conductors. Zero resistance between is actually a short-circuit, in theory. In practice the resistance will never be zero.
@anton1949
@anton1949 6 лет назад
Yes, in an eerie coincidence they call it resistance.

the problem with circuit breakers is that when they repeatedly trip some people tape them in the ON position
@Marcel_Germann
@Marcel_Germann 6 лет назад
I don't know how the circuit breaker are in the US, but on the ones you get here in Europe this is impossible. They'll trip internally, no matter in which position the lever is hold, this is called a "trip-free mechanism".
@Fe7Ace
@Fe7Ace 6 лет назад
That sounds like a problem with the person rather than the device. Should always ask "why?" when a breaker trips.

@lynxlynx1234
@lynxlynx1234 6 лет назад
That's not true... Every circuit breaker has two types of tripping conditions. First is thermal, when current is slightly grater than nominal for long time (shown on video). Second is electromagnetic, it trips when short-circuit occurs and it's very fast. High current goes on coil that pulls the tripping mechanism. Of course I'm talking about basic CB not RCD's or others. Btw, in Europe we use RCD for whole house, not only in one or two sockets. And we use 230V so same cable can provide two times much power.

@Marcel_Germann
@Marcel_Germann 6 лет назад
I think so, same as it is in a fuse. The wire inside of a fuse will almost evaporate in a kind of explosion if a short circuit occurs. That's the reason why such fuses are filled with sand.

This bit just seemed like Scott found an old fuse panel and wanted to show it off versus actually wanting to help homeowners with their breakers. I say this because fuses are only a small percentage of houses today and every house in the last 10 years has had arc fault breakers in some parts (and now for all branch circuits) which trip not only because of being overloaded or shorted but also a variety of other less dramatic reasons. Not only that, no mention was made that when breakers trip,they don't go all the way to the off position and would be in the middle. He could have easily demonstrated a tripped breaker and how to reset it.

Breakers are NOT an improvement. Breakers have problems too. Easy for someone to switch to a larger capacity breaker. They have many moving parts, which makes them MUCH MORE unreliable than a properly sized fuse.. if a homeowner doesn't investigate the cause of the breaker tripping, and repeatedly resets the breaker, it can start nuisance tripping at a much lower amperage than it's rating. Worse, the worn parts can HANG, and NOT trip, in response to an overload, and cause a fire or damage equipment. IT DOES HAPPEN. The restriction fuse bases prevented people from putting in over-rated fuses. But people are ignorant, and stuff in foil. So the government mandated inferior protection. - "fool proof". So people like me, in engineering for 39 years, have to pay the insurance company a premium to keep our superior protection. Incidentally, did you know the government doesn't even allow the use of breakers in medical electronic equipment? That's because even the best breaker, being a much more complex device than a fuse, sometimes fails to trip when presented with an overload, and damages the equipment.
