How Geogrid Works: Lateral Restraint Demonstration

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers defined the primary applications of geogrid stabilization for paved and unpaved structures: lateral restraint, improved bearing capacity, and tensioned membrane effect. Lateral restraint is the ability to confine aggregate particles within the plane of the geogrid. Once the aggregate layer strikes through the apertures of the geogrid, its vertical and horizontal movement is limited, creating a high degree of in-plane stiffness. This means that when geogrid is used in the design of paved or unpaved structures, these structures become much more efficient at managing the stress imposed by heavy loads because the aggregate moves very little.
This box-of-rocks video offers a simple demonstration of the lateral restraint mechanism at work. You'll see a comparison of how an unstablized section responds to a section benefiting from the introduction of TriAx Geogrid, the most advanced geogrid, in an aggregate layer.

that should be determined by the engineer (depend on lot of factors: soil nature, trafic loads, backfill soil nature, etc) in coordination with the laboratory engineer)
