Today we have the privilege of giving you a VIP tour of Gettysburg National Military Park's Cannon Shop, where the park restores and maintains the thousands of cannons, monuments, markers, tablets and fences that guests have enjoyed at the battlefield since 1895.
The American Battlefield Trust preserves America’s hallowed battlegrounds and educates the public about what happened there and why it matters. We permanently protect these battlefields for future generations as a lasting and tangible memorial to the brave soldiers who fought in the American Revolution, the War of 1812, and the Civil War.

I love how they made it clear that they do not need more volunteers currently because this is very cool and I imagine that people would want to.

Haven't been to Gettysburg in decades, can't wait to go back. Visited Shiloh battlefield for the first time ever last year and not far from the Guest Area, there was a backwoods road with many discarded empty cannon carriages. It kinda broke my heart. The battlefield did not disappoint, and being there on the ground made a lot more sense of the battle, especially with the cannons on the ground. When I saw this video, I realized there are people actively preserving history. Many thanks.

Just Beautiful work and craftmanship for sure! Loved the behind the scenes of what most take for granted and not know of the many hours and the dedication of restoring such very important things for the battle field to come back to life once again and to give the visitors just a glimpse of what they can vision of what was and feel a part of. Hats off to you Garry and Chris for educating us further and to the American Battlefield Trust!

Very cool video as the artillery's role at Gettysburg is my favorite area of study. It's great to see how well they're being taken care of and marvel at the skills these people have to make it all happen. It was kind of wild seeing the clip of the cannon being replaced on East Cemetery Hill as I was watching it from across the road when I visited Gettysburg back in May. Thanks for all you do.

Educational video! Apparently Gettysburg has few if any wooden carriages remaining. For other battlefields, how often does a wooden cannon carriage, exposed to the elements, need to be completely replaced? Every 30-40 years?

Garry, Since a battery will have e moved around the battlefield from position to position as the battle progressed, how do the decision makers decide where to place the artillery for a particular battery? Interesting video once again. Thanks, Karl
@AmericanBattlefieldTrust
@AmericanBattlefieldTrust Месяц назад
Good question. The war department spoke to veterans and use early maps to make those decisions. The park service today abides almost always with the early decisions.
@ameyring

Nice video! Are the carriages move around for a little variety on the battlefield or kept in the same spots for years?
@AmericanBattlefieldTrust

They’re mostly kept in the same spots as placed by the Gettysburg national military Park commission which relied on early maps and veterans.

Question is what ever happened to the original cannons over the years? Do any still exist in a complete state?
@AmericanBattlefieldTrust
@AmericanBattlefieldTrust Месяц назад
The wooden carriages are exceedingly rare. There are still thousands of original barrels on battlefields and in town squares, but many were melted down for scrap eventually.

Curious, but why are some of the cannons light "green" in color? Would appreciate expertise as to why this non-black coloration.
@AmericanBattlefieldTrust
@AmericanBattlefieldTrust Месяц назад
Those that are black are made of iron whereas the green or blue ones are made of bronze or brass. They oxidize.
@toddgreve6587
@toddgreve6587 Месяц назад
@AmericanBattlefieldTrust So, they don't polish or remove the oxidation? Of course, it'll just back with time.
@DonAbrams-hq7ln
@DonAbrams-hq7ln Месяц назад
Most tubes that were bronze were kept bright per union regs. Green is a patina that is oxidation of copper alloys. Most union batteries were Ordinance rifles . All seige guns were Parrots, Dahlgren or Rodmans to support forts, seaports and surround ingredients the capitols
@DonAbrams-hq7ln
@DonAbrams-hq7ln Месяц назад
Go to any Federal Ordinance manual, rifles,muskets and bronze artillery were to be kept "bright" per regs.
@turinturambar8622
@turinturambar8622 Месяц назад
@@toddgreve6587leaving the oxidation prolongs the metals life as constant polishing could (over LONG periods of time) wear down metal, especially were the makers information is.

Is there a debate on the correct period color to paint the guns? Olive for the Union, probably, but, might it be useful to paint the Confederate guns brown/yellow or some such?
@savagestevens6398
@savagestevens6398 Месяц назад
Yes among the civil war artillery nerds. lol. I used to do artillery reenacting and we always debated/wondered what shade of olive was correct. “Olive” green was what was spec’d out but of course there were no color photos. I do like the parks choice of shade though. 👍
