I did a cruise on the USS America. We anchored off Yemen. Well the anchor and all the chain went to the bottom. Had to get a salvage ship to retrieve it

Only two times I recall using those anchors while I was onboard. Typhoon in the Philippines forced us to anchor in Subic Bay, and we anchored off Fremantle, W.A. for a visit to Australia.

I wonder if those anchors can totally stop an aircraft carrier. I am sure they slow down some but 30 tons doesnt seem like a lot of weight compared to a floating city.

The chain holds the ship while anchoring. The anchor just holds the end of the chain in place.

Anchor is not used as a brake except in an emergency. Ship must be stopped before anchor is dropped.

Sweet memories eh. I worked there as an electronic installer. Once leaving the catwalk a long time to get to the bridge and way longer to get to sensors in/at the bow or an aft sensor. Hundreds of them.

If you're going to do a video explaining some of the intracacies of naval matters, dont you think it would be a good idea to get a robot that knows the correct pronounciation of naval terms? LIke "Hawse" for example, or "Forecastle" You just make your whole video suspect if you dont know how to say basic words like those.

I live 15 minutes from Newport News Shipbuilding and have driven by it on my way to and from work for more than 20 years. I've seen many of those "superlifts" dangling in the air as I sit in traffic at the Monitor-Merrimac Bridge Tunnel. Spent 2 cruises as part of the air wing on the USS Independence and 1 on the USS Forrestal. The Forrestal was considered to be the first "Super Carrier" ever built Massive ships that are dwarfed by the newer Ford class carriers.

"more than 12"? If owe consider CV 59 Use Forrestal the first super carrier, the US has built (and is building) about 30 super carriers alone. Probably should have added "nuclear" to the script as it is close to the number cited. of course the total number of US-built aircraft carriers is equal to the number on the newest one, CVN 78 USS JFK.

Britain has two new aircraft carriers of the Queen Elizabeth 11 (2) Class, EACH cost about £3.8 BILLION or about $6.65 BILLION, neither work fully, both have been plagued with breakdowns, and major leaks, they cannot operate in hot climates, and frequently have to be towed in for repairs, and worst of all, if a new engine has to be fitted, each ship has to be literally cut open for the re-fit, there is no easy way to remove and install an engine, they are a FECKIN NIGHTMARE to operate and maintain.

@keithburton3713: Although your concerns are real, you greatly oversimplify one of the missions of a U.S. aircraft carrier. Yes, one of their biggest roles is to help "protect" smaller allied nations. It is indeed an expensive part of maintaining a two-ocean navy. But those countries that menace smaller, weaker nations must be made to understand that when they try to bully a smaller country, they risk a slap in the head from a huge protector like a carrier with 80 jet aircraft, manned by a bunch of young, hard-dick pilots who would enjoy nothing more than bombing the shit out of someone.
