Let's see how good your listening skills are when you have to pay attention to where the emphasis of a word is. Tell us how you did!

Llamé a la secretaria. - I called the secretary
Llame a la secretaria. - Call the secretary
Everything is the same except for that little accent mark or tilde over the "e" in the first sentence. Did you notice how much the sentence changed with the use of the accent mark/tilde? It changed an "order" or "instruction" to a sentence in "past". This is really easy to see when you have the word written down in front of you but can be a lot harder when you are just listening to someone speak.
So in this video, we are going to do just that. The first part of the Spanish practice Maria is going to say a word and you have to figure out what syllable in the word is getting the emphasis. For the second part of the practice, Maria is going to say a sentence in Spanish and you will have to figure out if the sentence is an instruction or in past. You will do this by listening for the emphasis like in the first activity. The emphasis that Maria puts on words in the sentence with accents will let you know if the sentence is in past or if the sentence is an instruction.
Now if you have trouble when you are speaking Spanish giving the emphasis on words in past, we have a tip for you. Every time you see a tilde picture someone pinching you right as you are about to say it. This will give you the emphasis that the tilde will need for people to understand. Just make sure you do not go crazy with it and look as if you are an angry Spanish student. Maria says that it is important to overexaggerate the sound and then over time as you speak, slowly dial it back so that it sounds more natural.
Did you do better than Cody in this video? I hope you did! It can be a hard topic to get your head around but if you keep practicing it will make sense. Let us know how you did in the comments. Also, remember if you liked this video make sure to give it a thumbs up and subscribe.

Fun and useful video, many thanks. I should have known you would not have made a mistake but I thought that you had until I looked it up and learned that the word 'tilde' is a false friend. I know it in English as being this symbol '~' like in the word 'mañana', but thanks to your video - and looking it up - I now know that the Spanish 'tilde' means generally a written accent and most often what in English is called an acute accent - like the one over the E in 'caminé'.

¡Sí! ¡Excelente! El símbolo '~' se llama "virgulilla" en español (no "tilde"). ¡Gracias!

Growing up in Southern California in the 1960s, my Spanish teachers used the phrase "con acento" to indicate an accent. Is "tilde" a regionalism?

Don’t feel bad Cody. I missed a lot too. As Maria said, the differences are subtle. I think it just takes time listening an catching the difference when used in normal speech versus when learning a teacher exaggerates the last syllable in the pretérito. By the way, I love your videos! You guys are great! The best Spanish learning videos on the internet !

Yes. It provides wonderful listening practice, on one hand & emotional support & validation to see Cody struggle too. There's a real thing with most second language Spanish speakers acting superior & pretending it's a piece of cake, after they've mastered Spanish.

Hi Cody, Stress accents also make a difference in English. Example: record as a noun (stress on re) vs as a verb (stress on cord). Digest as a noun (stress on di) vs as a verb (stress on gest). These are also very difficult for people learning English as a second language.

Thanks for the great training exercises, very helpful! Cody has indeed come a long way, keep up the great work! There are a few examples in English where the stress changes depending on the meaning.
