Is a bike too old at 10 years, 5 or 3 even?
Some people say 20000Km is big mileage and a bike with that on the clock would have serious problems...
Mine has 123500!!
So just how good is this bike still?
For someone like me, who doesn't need every new fad that comes along the minute it appears on the market, it's as good as new :)

I can't remember whether over all those miles you've even felt the need to experiment with a 16-tooth front sprocket (have you?). There is actually a serious life lesson here, which it's evident hasn't been lost on you David, which is that happiness is to be found in enjoying what you have, rather than forever chasing what you don't.

Hi Tony - no never considered it. For me it does almost everything in the right ratio. My mechanic told me the engine needs to be revved in it's mid-range and not too much lower to keep it happy. From what I've seen, those who have messed with the sprockets have then moved on to asking how to get more power from the engine... the answer seems to be they have the wrong bike maybe, lol! 1st gear would maybe me the only place I see a slight problem, but essentially I just never use it on dirt or gravel. When I finally mustered up the courage to ride faster than snails pace off road, I realised I needed to be in at least 2nd. Yeah that's pretty much been a principle of life that was taught to me by my Grandparents :)

Well done on the 10 years and 123,xxx kms. Testament to the saying: bigger (and more expensive) isn't always better. The key is to keep on throwing your leg over. BTW, have also seen a few brown snakes out and about this spring, they keep you alert. Congrats to you and Falco, thanks for your vids. HT

Cheers mate, yes I've ridden past quite a few broken down, large bikes that cost 3 times as much, all the time celebrating the Honda's total lack of problems! Them nope ropes sure are active and numerous this year, maybe the last few wet years lead to more food for their prey and increased their numbers. Ride safe buddy.

@@CaptainCrankyMotovlogger l like the simple camping style you have, not in the need of the lates "cant live without" gear on the marked as so many of this motorcycle channels promote. Like the humor and simplicity. When you and bollard Bill ride together its epic. 🤣🤣. Its just a joy to tag along.

I have not been with you for ten years as I only came back to biking five years ago but really enjoyed your adventures on the fabulous Honda 500X. My Nc750X makes me feel the same way as you do for your bike. I am sitting with a little dram and tipping it to your adventures 🍷🍷🍷

Falkor is one of the reasons I bought mine. Super reliable, easy to ride and not too heavy to lift. I’ve recently put on a set of 705’s as per your recommendation’s so now to try a bit of gravel road to see if I can stay upright on these. The one thing I would like to have though is cruise control for the longer rides.
@CaptainCrankyMotovlogger
@CaptainCrankyMotovlogger 10 месяцев назад
That's great! I wish I had kept every comment by someone who bought one because of my videos, Honda might give me another one 😆 Good luck buddy, I had no skills at all when I started, and the most important thing I've MADE my brain learn is not to react to front end loss of traction by grabbing the bars, but rather to grab the tank with my knees, loosen grip on the bars and look ahead... Of course I had 11 crashes during the learning process 🤣 I have a physical cruise control which does help to rest the wrist on long highways, but won't keep a reliable speed for a long time.
@jeffarnie
@jeffarnie 10 месяцев назад
@@CaptainCrankyMotovlogger I have put on an omni type cruise control which like yours, only locks the throttle in place, so as long as the road remains completely flat it will maintain a speed but any slight up or down of the road and it's back to normal use. So, as you say, it does allow a small rest of the hand.

The 500X has a number of things going for it. First off it's a Honda. Not every bike Honda has built has been long lived; I remember the hot running hot rod air cooled fours of the 70's and 80's that just in normal use ran their oil very hot. That is bad for oil life and engine life. The CB500 in contrast is liquid cooled, in a very mild state of tune and has a large oil sump for the size of the engine also keeping oil temps down. In modern times, Honda has built a remarkable number of very long lived motorcycles. Engineer father told me more than 50 years ago that changing your oil is the single most important thing to make your engine last. Oil going dark is the oil doing its job; to hold combustion contaminants in suspension until the oil is drained. Buy a well engineered, well made bike, maintain it and don't abuse it and it will run for a very very long time. Buy a bike; ride the crap out of it never touch it ,then 20,000 km is big mileage.

Yes, had them done then and at every major service - never needed adjusting. It was just Honda being over-cautious about a new engine back in 2013

What are your thoughts on the CB500X being replaced by the NX500 in 2024? Should I get the cb or the nx?
@CaptainCrankyMotovlogger
@CaptainCrankyMotovlogger 10 месяцев назад
No idea, no-one has really had a chance to check it out. I think Honda may have shot themselves in the foot with the re-name - the 500X has such a huge following which they could have used. The more modern "bells and whistles" (which really are taking the place of that old thing we used to have - skill) are added to any vehicle, the less I want it. I'd rather build up my skills and also they are just more, usually unproven, systems to fail and leave you stranded somewhere. Honda finally got the CB right when they added the 19" front - that brought so many more riders on board.
