Greninja may have been one of Kalos’s superstars, my favorite starter from that region has always been Chesnaught. He was the (Spiky) shield of my team.
Chesnaught will return in Gen 9, and it will have the most important buff of all: being able to legally exist in a Friend Ball to demonstrate that even if it's spiky, it's still very friend-shaped.
Funny the timing of this vid for me. Just a few days ago I started a playthrough of Y for the first time in years. Delphox was long my favorite kalos starter but decided to go with Chesnaught this time. He's grown on me a lot and he's pretty cool honestly
Chestnaught literally went upon the Lord of the Rings style hero's journey, they set out to become strong, gained their strength and became celebrated for it, only to find out that its journey meant it could no longer return to its home (RU).
It’s a really strange thing to say, but Chesnaught has to be in the top 5 bald Pokémon of all time, right next to Torkoal and Dugtrio. Hopefully it’s hair grows back someday.
I think once the gen 9 meta game gets more defined, a Quagsire remake would be interesting along with some analysis of its Paldean evolution, Clodsire.
@@civilvaril1181 Quagsire is the lone uber allowed to roam the lower ranks every generation because when they ban him everyone cheats and uses him anyway so noone wins. thus he must be disrespected with his evaluation. Clodsire is also pretty great too i loved using mine
@@civilvaril1181looks like it won't be no more, Quagsire, for once, seems to be settling down in UU as a tier staple and it doesn't seem to be moving out anytime soon
Chesnaught has a special place in my heart. I hatched a shiny Chespin the day my nephew was born, so I named it after him. I decided that I was going to raise it to be the best it could be and eventually give it to my nephew once he started his own Pokemon journey. Sadly, Dexit messed up those plans, and I lost the game that was holding him
Never understood why people hate this evo line so much, I always loved it, very unique and interesting designs. Chesnaught was always a fun bulky spiker to use, just absorbing physical hits and being annoying with Leech Seed Spiky Shield, despite its many weaknesses
i loved cheshnaught, i do think it had stiff competition in the trio, greninja being one of the most popular pokemon with loads of love. delphox for um reasons. but loved all designs their classic RPG party look and the double type triangle with each other
I wonder how helpful Close Combat will be for its battle style. Granted, it's found success before with Superpower, which is inferior. Wide Guard should be interesting though, especially considering the heavy emphasis on VGC in this current generation.
I really wish Chesnaught was in Gen 9 by the time of making this video because it got some really good buffs. Not only in the form of Body Press, Trailblaze, and Close Combat, but also Terastalization, which fixes a lot of issues with it’s weakness filled typing. And on top of that, there’s no more Scald for Water Types to cripple it with.
I don't understand why people hate Chesnaught: I absolutely love it and it has a banger shiny! Can't wait for it to be legal in Gen 9 so that I can run a bulky set with it again!
Good to see that Chesnaught had several good niches even if most of them were rather temporary. It has several problems in battle - but it is very well designed to represent the warrior class since warriors also have some glaring weaknesses that can be taken advantage off pretty easily. When using it in game I always felt like it was a true warrior both in a good way and a bad way. At least it's not a "mage" archetype unable to use ice beam or thunderbolt when fire, ice and lighting are the three basic elements for literally any mage anywhere.
It was my very first starter in X when I was 11. Childhood memories of blasting through Kalos region on my boy Chesnaught. I could imagine that in an anime scene and it's beautiful.
Honestly, Chesnaught is my choice for one of the most underrated pokemon ever. Personally, it's the only starter that has a very intimidating and scary appearance to me, not quite like say, Incineroar's more tough and strong appearance, which to me is super cool and unique
Its pretty ugly if you ask me, it doesn’t make sense whit the rest of its previous evolution, the same problem goes for inceniroar, except this one isn’t ugly
You're not alone my man! Chesnaught is amazing, Love it's design and it's colours, they say it turned out white because of knights and old chestnuts, which is one of the most amazing details ever!
I will say I was not onboard for the design first time I saw it, but after seeing the context of it being like a knight/fighter made the whole design work for me. Love this guy
@@Kkkk-ll3ed I don't know about that, people seem to think incineroar is pretty ugly too, and yeah it looks weird compared to its previous evos cause it looks like a turtle for some reason...
12:17 Considering the theming of Chesnaught as the 'Fighter', a build like this genuinely makes him feel like a tank setting up their damage dealers for a clean victory. Hell, most of the builds tend to be like this, which is absolutely delightful! Chesnaught was an absolute bro on teams, it seems.
Chesnaught is actually my favorite starter in the series, I don’t get why he isn’t talked about more. Most people either don’t like him or forget he even exists, so I’m glad he had a successful competitive career at the least :)
Still my favorite Starter to this day With Swampert and Inciniroar being the Favorites of the other types...Rillaboom a very close second grass but my boi
Chesnaught was my favorite gen 6 starter for a long time. Nowadays I'm kinda torn between it and Greninja. Glad to hear that it was solid overall on the competitive scene.
As my first starter in X&Y, Chesnaught had always had a special place for me. His combination of strong fighting type moves helped clean through most of X and Y. Especially in the same gen as Gren, he definitely needs more love.
I've always been baffled by how completely shafted Gen 6's starters were besides Greninja. Like, no Mega, no nothing. It's a shame too, since Chesnaught is probably my favourite grass type starter of the franchise, dude is fantastic.
Radical Red made me into a huge fan of this thing. They gave it Bulletproof to replace Overgrow as its primary ability, and Iron Barbs as its new Hidden Ability, and they buffed Needle Arm to a 95 base power for a very reliable Grass STAB. It's now one of my favorite Grass Pokemon. I used to not care for it because I thought it was goofy looking, but the more I've used it and the more I look at it, the more I appreciate it as a Pokemon. Being partly based on a Glyptodont and a juggernaut is pretty darn neat.
Don't know why everyone hated this evolution so much. As a kid who grew up watching Chowder, I LOVED Chesnaught, mainly cause the name reminded me of Mr. "Dinkle loo Dinkle lee" himself. Whenever I'd send it into battle, kid me would always say "Chesnuts about to give you the BEATIN' OF A LIFETIME!" Ah, memories
I feel like there should be some clause to save Pokémon like Chesnaught from its Gen 7 fate, or Gen 5 Venusaur: if the thing that made them viable in a tier gets banned, the Pokémon can be dropped to a lower tier. Chesnaught was used solely to counter Bisharp, who then got banned, so Chesnaught should be let back into RU.
@@Bluecrimson217 Pretty sure Electivire doesn't count. It was face value viable and then fell out of a favor once its weaknesses were understood to be everywhere. It didn't raise up from a lower tier to counter something and then get stuck in the higher tier once that counter niche was gone, unless I'm forgetting something.
Even with more time to their respective meta games to develop further to potentially give them more things to speak about, and even with promotions and/or filling dialogs, chesnaught and delphox videos put together are barely same length as greninja's
This reminds me of that one chesnaught set in random battles that had Iron defense (or bulk up I can't really recall it anymore), trailblaze, body press, and synthesis with steel terra. T'was a fun set indeed.
Chesnaut was probably my favorite starter of this gen. Did a game of each and the brutal brawling moves made it just stick out. I was really expecting Chesnaut to be really low due to that 4x weakness to flying, but to hear it had a place in UBERS!? Even if it hasn't had as much of a place since then, it made me smile.
I'd take 40 points from it's SpAtk and put 25 in Spdef and the 15 in HP giving it 100 base Spdef and 103 base Hp so that it could be a better hit taker
Chesnaught is super interesting in my opinion, because while he does have a lot of the unstoppable physical attacker energy that a warrior-class character would have, he has a shocking amount of supportive and defensive options as well, like Taunt, Helping Hand, Spikes, both Wide Guard and Quick Guard, Synthesis, Leech Seed, Feint, and even Pain Split. And especially with the Gen 9 additions, he has a surprising amount of variety of set. I bet he'd be quite effective as a bulky Assault Vest sweeper with Trailblaze and Body Press, but we'll see.
My favorite kalos starter 😊 I cannot stand the hate for chesnaught it's cool badass I do think it's looks a bit to far from chespin and quilidin but overall a cool design maybe people will like it more as a stand alone pokemon since it's way to far from chespin but I think quilidin is the problem with this line it's wierd looking also shiny chesnaught is amazing it looks like the original coloring but normal is still cool and I had to defend it so much that it earned it's spot as my 6th favorite pokemon ever and it's pretty good in competitive and that one episode where it bonded with clemont's chespin and it blushed in embarrassment was so cute
Chesnaught a Starter I like but lacks the popularity of his edgy and furry brothers... Probably because of Quilladin Unfortunate since I like him a lot
I can’t recall how I constructed my Chesnaught in gen 6, but I think I used it a lot to prevent spore, to be able to make mega kangaskan effectively a 1-1 trade and then clear things up for my mega to take over the game. It also made aegislash cry as noted in this video. Again, I can’t remember it fully but I think I ran hammer arm, wood hammer, spiky shield and leech seed on swap to absolutely make mega kanga’s think twice and to make water defensive types cry. Was my favourite starter for the gen, and I was initially sad it lost its cuteness, but it makes up for it being a really big, wholesome badass!
Gen 6 was the first gen in a while where I felt they actually put some thought onto the starters, the signatute moves, the stat spreads, the learnsets. They were way better than Unova's Jack of all trades trio.
The unova starters in their original games were all pretty whelming. Emboar was a slow mixed attacking fire-fighting which made everyone want to never see that dual typing again on a starter. Samurott was slightly speedier, but nowhere near fast enough and it missed out on an awesome design by staying on all fours. Finally you had Serperior which goes first... and does _what,_ exactly? Even the Hidden Abilities were pretty bleh - the only good one was serperior's, and that didn't come out until well past its original gen. Unova is the _only_ gen where I ditched my starter since it had better competition.
@@Bluecrimson217 i refute that, reckless is pretty good on emboar, it boosts the damage of three of its best moves, being flare blitz, wild charge, and i think head smash
"Chesnaught is one of the most popular starters" As a long-time fan of Chesnaught who talks to other Pokemon fans, I can assure you it is not as popular as you claim, 90% of the people i talk to HATE chesnaught for one reason or another. Every recent generation has had one starter that people adore and one that people despise, and in generation 6 those were Fennekin and Chespin respectively.
I came here to see love for Chesnaught. I wanted to see what would become of Chespin since Fennekin didn't work out. I always assumed Greninja outshined the other starters even if Chesnaught is a great counter against it. I really loved it design when it evolved from Quilladin and I can't wait for the day I can use my Shiny Chespin in Violet and slap Trailblaze and body press on it.
Ever considered a video going really in depth about the tiers? Who and how decides them, how they're structured. Maybe why. Possible improvements. History
I feel the Gen 6 Starters, except for Greninja, get the least amount of love from the fandom or Game Freak. I hear how much they are ugly or how they're not as good but I think they are really creative and can do some damage. I've always liked all three Starters from this generation.
Glad to see my prediction for the tier (which was RU>NU>PU for Debut game>ORAS>Alola pt. 1 and 2) was fully and wholly incorrect! Do I generally care about it? No. Quilladin exists and in general, not my cup of tea in Pokemon preferences, but I'm glad when a Pokemon like this has such a storied career, I mean, UBERS?! Really? Freaking amazing what you expect to happen is like the total opposite of reality in a very good way!
Alrigth, picture this if you will: You are a 9 year old kid who just go XY a few weeks ago, its a little strange for you since there is no boy with pikachu anywhere but you are loving it anyway, one day you find yourself in the third gym, and is damn immposible, that girl and his Hawlucha can oneshot all your team after two Honeclaws/Power-up punch, dosent matter how hard you try you can pass it, dosen't matter how many days you invest. One day you are in your granny's house relaxing with the game and you say "Ok, last chance, if i lose i leave this", then you try and...Hawlucha is in red and she isn't healing!, you start sweating, but then it start one shoting your team one by one, then you send your starter come up, Quilladin, your ace, who has been close to beating Hawlucha in other ocasions, but now everything seems lost, she uses Flying Press... and he survives and takes it down with Rock tomb crit!, you scream "Yes!" so hard that probably the neigbours hear you, but wait...Quilladin levels up, he is evolving!. In the screen its shown a new unknown pokemon, an imposing knigth called "Chesnaugth" Maybe not the best starters, but for me the chespin line is the one i'll always remember
