Growing up in the 70s, 80s, and early 90s, Prime Liverrpool was just beautiful to watch, every player a gem from legends like Dalgleish, Hansen, Rush, Clemence, Neal, Whelen, Thompson, Nicol, Toshack, Keegan, Case, McDermott, Lee, Hughes, Aldridge and co. Then you would have a super sub like David Fairclough come on and win a game, or fullback Alan Kennedy come in clutch. Graeme Souness was always my favourite player with his brutal aggression, silky passing, thunderbolt shooting, and ability to control a game. Liverpool, the city was so strong too, with Everton having a great team and battling it out for 1st Division superiority with The Reds. There were some classic match ups between the city giants as well as peak Nottingham Forest. It truly was a special time.
That 5-0 game against Forest around that time, described as the best Liverpool performance ever for many years after by us "older" supporters, and even critics. What an era to be alive. Would love to see a tactical analysis video of that game, and whats considered our best "modern" performance for comparison.
@@COOLOCKERseen that game over and over ever since I was a kid. I think the 7-0 against UTD at Anfield and the 5-0 win at OT (biggest away win for either team ever in this fixture) was better. Granted, those UTD teams are trash compared to Forest back then.
@@COOLOCKER Agreed, Superb Goals, Build up, the Teamwork Grade A! But add the Spyurs game when we put seven past them Terry Macs goal in that crazy! Add the one he croed on the touchline at an angle at White Hart Lane - just crazy good! No word for it!.....the list is endless. We leave Manchester both of them for Dead as a Club, A Team, A History, A Culture. Liverpool is a Culture a Unique club in every respect. CRUCIALLY - Stiil a Club of the People and not the bllody bank account! Come you REDMEN!!
I was going to Comment I am Lifelong RED. Been there, seen it, been reduced to Tears of Joy! This Unique Iconic Club. I was going to comment you said it all for me - COME ON YOU REDMEN!!
I believe the team of the late 70's & early 80's would have been some force in today's premier league. I know the game has become quicker but the LFC team back then was insanely good. Also, the team of the late 80's with Barnes, Aldridge, Beardsley and co were sublime. If English teams weren't banned from European footy then I believe we would have won a couple more European cups in the 80's. And that's with the might of AC Milan in the late 80's early 90's.
@@justsomeguy2743 Fergie did. Only a few drunks in North Wales and Birkenhead supported Liverpool during that era. During his 26 years with Manchester United he won 38 trophies, including 13 Premier League titles, five FA Cups, and two UEFA Champions League titles.
One major point from the start: neither Arsenal or Man United had eras of dominance in the English game up to the 1950s when Liverpool started their reemergence from the 2nd division. Before then Arsenal had one period of dominance in the early 30s under Chapman, and Man Utd just emerged under Matt Busby, but it was Stan Cullis' Wolves side that were the no.1 team in England. Up to that point teams like Sunderland, Aston Villa, Newcastle, Preston shared the trophies. Liverpool themselves had periods at the turn of the 20th century and the early 20s, although both Arsenal and Man U had earlier FA cup success.
"Until the rise of Liverpool English football was dominated by Arsenal and Manchester United"? What absolute bollocks! Sure, both teams had a couple of good seasons each over the previous ten years but both teams where below Liverpool in the table of success at that time, the teams that actually dominated English football were Aston Villa, Everton and Wolverhampton Wanderers!
2 points: 1 - Kenny Dalglish is the greatest player in history; 2 - it's baffling how you make a 10 minute video on prime Liverpool without mentioning that they, and all English teams, were sadly banned from Europe for 5 years; they would have one the big one at least 2 or 3 more times had that not happened.

@@MotownShaker I wouldn't, but I would have had him in my Top 10 back when he was playing. Johan Cruyff who I would have had in my Top 4 back then had Dalglish at No. 7 in his Top 10.
The team that liverpool had during the 70s and 80s was truly magnificent. King kenny is still the best player we have ever had. Dont get me wrong, Gerrard was a sensational player, but Kenny won so much more and had a football brain better than many in world footbal. I was lucky enough to grow up watching the great teams of the 70s and 80s. They will never be matched.
Rush and Dalglish were the greatest front two ever. Hansen and Lawrenson in the top 2 or 3 centre back pairings of all time and Souness was the greatest captain. I blame Sky for making people think football only started in 1992, go and look at how many goals Rush scored for Liverpool, that will never be matched by another British player.
346 goals for Liverpool if I'm not mistaken. Absolutely true. People don't even know how big Nottingham Forest, Aston Villa and even Everton used to be.
@@joshuaadams330 Yeah Forest in particular are very overlooked. Won two European cups and were as good if not better than Liverpool at one point and that was a Liverpool team who won 4 European cups in 7 years and were in their pomp.
@@andrewwright4195 they weren't. They were a feared team and a quality side. A proper big club but then it all went south somewhere along the line. They had a legend of a manager in Clough too in their golden days.
Them prime Liverpool sides throughout the 80s would have beaten any team in any era of the game. They had unbelievable spine of a team of individuals multiple of them were leaders in team with flair and goals added with it. There wasn't any weakness in whole squad that's why they dominated in English & European football. Could have easily won more doing that time. People have said one of best games doing that time was Liverpool vs Nottingham Forest at Anfield. Where Liverpool won like 9-0 doing a league game someone once said Liverpool that night could have beaten prime Brazil team that's how great they were.
This is brilliant content man. I hope you cover more historic clubs and teams in their prime. I think there is a major gap on RU-vid about serious research leading to strong story telling about some of the best club and national teams in the past 70 years.
@@successblueprintinstitute Liverpool were knocked out of the European cup in 1979,80,82,83 by Nottingham Forest and amateur teams from Poland, Bulgaria and Georgia ffs. They always shat themselves again the communist clubs.
I was so lucky to be born when i was.Started supporting Liverpool as an 8year old in 1977.The joy happiness &hope this club/team have bought into my life can not be measured.YNWA❤️
Same here mate I’m a KOP season ticket holder and i went to my first match with me dad and granddad in 1969 when i was 4 and I’ve loved it ever since Y N W A 97
Same happened to me in 1974. At school I was torn on who to be up for in the upcoming FA cup final between Liverpool and Newcastle. My mind was made up on the morning of the match when my mum’s friend dropped off a bag full of hand me down clothes, right at the bottom of the bin liner was a satchel type sports bag, it was red with Liverpool FC printed on it. From that day on I was Liverpool mad, but unfortunately was unable to go to games because my dad wasn’t really a huge football fan. During my teens I started attending my home club Blackburn Rovers games because all my friends were going and I didn’t want to be left out. Also it was only £1.50 paid at the turnstiles. I must admit that I switched my allegiance to an inferior club playing in the second division but still to this day have a huge soft spot for Liverpool. It is however sad to see the game change so much from what I grew up with, a time when more than just a handful of clubs had a good chance of winning silverware. It’s hard to believe that teams like Derby, West Ham, even Everton were winning trophies back then.
I play as a defender with my local amateur football team, and was introduced to Alan Hansen by my coach, calling him the greatest defender of all time. Even though Hansen has retired long before I was born, my coach told me to watch the videos on his performance with Liverpool, and he has been my idol ever since.
souness's shots looked like they were floating in but soon as they hit the back of the net they looked like they went in with a thud at a 100mph. amazing technique that.
As a youngster Graeme Souness was into boxing and football, he was unsure which sport to choose so he combined the two. He would punch opponents hither and yon, luckily for him and LFC, the FA/referees etc etc largely ignored the goings on and even the history books laugh at the fact you could actually kill the opposition in those days.
Yes, lost 2 titles by a point to the cheating City and 2 Champions League finals to the luckiest team ever. Madrid were not better than Liverpool in either of those finals, especially 2022. Madrid just got the luck. As usual.
I'm a Arsenal Fan now - as sons generally follow their dads no matter what team you end up with . But growing up in the 1980s - when I wasn't lighting fires , building camps , smashing stuff and swinging on gates . I was playing football , cricket , rugby ,American football , tennis. But football was obviously my favorite , played before school., brealtimes and after school rain or shine . This was the Era of Liverpool - The FA Cup was a massive event in the 1980s . The streets were quiet and after every kid was playing football . I didn't really watch that much football . BUT Liverpool I watched - it was just a fantastic team . I've said for many years in the pub in the 90s ....They would have destroyed Europe Lastly - 86" was first world Cup watching - it was a brilliant world Cup. As above - about the FA Cup- I even the Scottish FA Cup. And as a young kid playing for a local team , every year we used to go to Wembley to watch "England vs Scotland " school boys
Everton fans had a party to celebrate Ian Rush’s move to Juventus as he always scored against them. Needless to say the mood was somber amongst Everton fans when he returned and resumed tormenting them 😂😂
Simply put,Liverpool in those days played the best football I have ever seen from an English club, especially in the 80s and early 90s,it was complete perfection, fantastic players all around the pitch, and what a defence they had ,Hansen and Lawrence impregnable 6>1 Amen
@zzzaaa0990 if you look at records they will never be beaten because they dominated Europe and England won the league and champion league back to back never been done again if we had more than 1 sub crazy how much we would have had too city have 5
Great!! But it doesn't count, because it happened before 1992. Pele, Best, Charlton and Cruyff don't count either and El Diego last couple of prime year nothing either (according to fans who call the Premier League the Prem).
The trouble with having seen that team back then is that you are always looking back to them,I know I shouldn't but it's impossible not to,it sounds petty saying I saw Dalglish in his prime but if you'd seen him you'd feel the same.
There hasn't been a British centre back anywhere as good as Alan Hansen amongst my top ten Liverpool players of all time. Only Rio Ferdinand was similar in style.
Got to ask this. Why, when talking about Forest's domination of the late 70s, is the footage of a game between Liverpool and Norwich City, specifically the great goal from Justin Fashanu?
Gone are the days when Liverpool players played to win the Championship every season! Souness once said "Finishing the season with one trophy was a disaster" Enough said!!!
brillant content! to be honest. bill and bob's era of football was a bit too spacey and not so fast paced. don't think anyone even pele or maradona can make do with the crazy fast pressing of english football of now. enjoyed the skills, pace of mcmanaman, fowler era more than now. now is too little winger play or too little banger goals and too many acting. nevertheless, hoping to see how slot will play out.
By the time I understood anything about football and Liverpool in 1991. Liverpool were on the decline. I knew they were great with huge success from watching videos but Liverpool to me were woeful.
@@marnfulda1758 I don’t forget anything. The problem was Liverpool weren’t good to win titles. Either the manager wasn’t good enough or the defence and goalkeeper. Liverpool didn’t have the full package. The only season’s they looked good enough were 2001/02 and 2008/09. The 1990’s they lacked the defence, gk and manager.
Hansen one of the worlds greatest defenders was dropped for the 86 World Cup out of sheer spite by tinker Ferguson. No manager worth their salt would even contemplate ditching a defender of such calibre. Amen.
I'm just wondering why FERGIE didn't dominate EUROPE becausd by god he had the TEAMS to do it and i think LIVERPOOL have been in 10 EUROPEAN FINALS winning 6 is it??
Yo chill we don’t talk about that 😂. Supposedly the players didn’t take it that seriously and went out the night before. Regardless, when they met Zico was arguably the best player in the world and his team the best in SA. Respect
@@TKT49 Amateur teams knocked Liverpool out in 80,82 and 83. Souness the Tory and the fans was terrified of socialist teams. The handful of Bulgarians who went go Anfield smashed up half the Kop
