Turns out it was a glorified marketing trick after all. Gen 4 handled that better in comparison. As much as that generation felt like it relied on Pokemon from previous gens a little bit too much in the case of D/P/Pl, many evolutions they introduced to older pokemon in that gen were neat.

“In the name of the Pokémon order of the senate, you are hereby banned.” Rayquaza: “Oh, but I AM the Senate.” “Not yet.” Rayquaza: “It’s mega evolution, then.”
You left out a nice bit of trivia. Mega rayquaza was still so indisputably the best pokemon in Gen VII that smogon didn't even bother to suspect him in ubers.
it is close to 800 bst, has an defense enhancing abillity, a high base power spamable stab move that doesn't miss and it can hold an item... Only in VGC it is slidely costy because it takes both a mega and a legendary slot while its ability can be a hinderence to you as well while moves like dragon ascent and close combat are high risk high reward moves because of 2 opponents...
That's because the banning of mega ray was more of a philosophical decision then a balance one. The core question wasn't "was Mega ray incredibly busted?", of course it was. The question was "is Ubers a competetive tier or a playable ban list?", and they eventually landed on tier due to the sheer number of mons that now occupy ubers.
Frankie Gregory Ultra Necrozma wins the matchup unless Ray is scarfed (unfortunately has to run a dragon move to OHKO) or sash. Mega Rayquaza is still the stronger mon by a couple light years. Dragon dance, extremespeed, 180/180/115 offenses, 105/100/100 bulk with delta stream, better offensive typing, better movepool, flying type close combat, and most importantly items mega Ray wins.
@Frankie Gregory Mega rayquaza still in AG because its simply stronger, you need a super specific strategy to counter it meaning it warps the meta, thats just a testiment to its strength not to its weakness
@@sayvionwashington1939 Kinda surprised they disallowed it to use Z moves while Mega Evolved. Like GameFreak, if you are gonna make retarded decisions, don't half-ass it.

Anything Goes does have a one singular rule: No Endless Battle Clause. Which means Recycle + Leppa Berry Slowbro is banned from Anything Goes Eat your heart out Mega Rayquaza.
@@QuestionableLogic_ if you have two Pokemon battling each other with their only moves being recycle holding a leppa berry the match would go on forever because the leppa berry restores pp on a Pokemon move so recycle would never run out.
@@PeterGriffin11 More specifically, Slowbro would have Recycle, Slack Off, Healing Pulse and Block. Actually, Arceus is better in my opinion than Mega Rayquaza in Anything Goes meta. The team I'm currently using runs both (a banded mega ray and a pair of defensive arcei, one poison and one dark), but I've found more often than not that Arceus is just usually straight up better. It's so much more flexible. When a mega ray comes out, I think alright that's easy, he's gonna dragon ascent. When an arceus comes out, I think um is this e-killer, a wall, a perish trap, or a healer? It's just so much more versatile with 120 stats across the board. Sure, mega ray has higher attacks but it's much more limited in terms of STAB, since arceus can get STAB on whatever it wants with multitype. Next, and most importantly, ARCEUS OUTSPEEDS. E-killer can easily 1v1 a mega rayquaza and destroy it because of that. Turn 1 Swords Dance, Turn 2 Extreme Speed will one shot. But yes, to those who say Ultra Necrozma is better, it's not. The moveset is extremely limited just due to photon geyser taking up a slot and being forced to hold a z-crystal, and the typing is just so mediocre, especially since there's a certain little guy named Marshadow who learns Shadow Sneak (which i think just straight up OHKOs). There's a total of 3 moves I can think of right now that they run: Photon Geyser, Sunsteel Strike, Earthquake (not counting setup). It also has surprisingly little offensive power despite its stats and the speed doesn't really help counterbalance that. In a 1v1, Ultra Nec does usually beat mega ray, but mega ray has a better matchup to pretty much everything else.
Rayquaza Turn 1: Flyinium Z Turn 2: Dragon Ascent (if Arceus survives) I think you aren't so intelligent, Arceus needs 3 turns to beat Rayquaza with Extreme Speed, let me explain: Arceus Turn 1: Swords Dance Turn 2: Extreme Speed Arceus dead Do you really think that Arceus is better than Rayquaza? Have you ever seen Rayquaza's moveset? It's incredible.
Mega Ray so broken a new Smogon tier was created to contain it. The hell were Gamefreak smoking when they not only give Rayquaza a Mega, but allow it to use other items like Life Orb in conjunction. Thank God they did not allow it to use Z-moves while Mega Evolved. Though Funbro looks at it from above.
They nerf Pokemon who never deserved to be nerfed like Gengar, Talonflame, Breloom, both Sableye and it's mega evolution but they don't nerf Mega Rayquaza? Game Freak is so logic backwards.
How GOOD was Rayquaza ACTUALLY? So good he BROKE THE METAGAME. Smogon was FORCED to create an entirely NEW tier ABOVE Ubers! MEGA RAYQUAZA IS LITERALLY MORE POWERFUL THAN GOD! Well, Arceus. The Pokemon God.
@@TakerRIP66 not really what it excels at. It doesn't have much in the way of offensive prowess What it does do well is taking hits and, using Pressure + Substitute + Protect, PP stalling out the opponent's moves. Scald is usually the only offensive move it should optimally run since it can get some burns with that, and other than that it is a great abuser of moves such as Protect, Substitute, Roar, Rest and Calm Mind, since it is one of the bulkiest Pokemon around Ice Beam is best left for stuff that actually does considerable damage without the need of boosting
I seriously want to know how the devs looked at this monster of a Pokémon’s mega evolution and said “yes, this is definitely what we need to put into the game!” I mean, being the ONLY pokemon that can mega evolve WITHOUT A STONE is one huge thing, putting it on an already Uber strong pokemon is just madness!
@KOO YEW MUN - Well I know it's been 8 months since you post this comment but I still want to reply to you. I think the just didn't care about competitive pokemon. Same happened to Dark Souls 3. And Rayquazanite sucks
I did. With mega Salamence. In which Rayquaza was OHKO'd. 120 vs 115 speed stat, that margin must have been frustrating for my Rayquaza spamming opponent.
Zacian and Zamazanta have been nerfed in Gen 9, Intrepid Sword and Dauntless Shield only activate once per game now. Zacian is still going to be a MENACE though.
@@General_C still busted. Not that abusable. Getting a stat boost is so valuable, especially on a pokemon that has one of the highest bast stat totals in the game.
@@vDeadbolt yeah, a free +1 boost to a freaking 700 BST (post nerf) Pokémon who's main role is being a Physical Attacker is still OP, but they're definitely will not be as dominant as Koraidon and especially Miraidon.
Mega Rayquaza > Gen 1 Mewtwo. Mewtwo was so broken because the game balance was unrefined. Special stat was op, psychic type was op. Mega Rayquaza existed in a mostly balanced environment with many viable pokemon and strategies. And completely messed it up.
Cookiestroke Completely disagreed. Gen 1 Mewtwo is magnitudes above gen 1 Alakazam. Gen 1 Mewtwo’s effect on gen 1 is way bigger than Mega Ray’s effect on gen 6 and gen 7
I'm actually playing it for the first time right now and I'm speechless at how you get it at level 70 before beating Juan. All my team training just went out the window because I'm just gonna one-shot everything forever.
@@Seajojo yep that is the only scenario I believe that ray beats zacian. The fact that he needs ONE item to give him the only possible win is just to show how broken zacian is. However zacian is broken in the current meta. In gen 6 Ray was obviously better than zacian is now because zacian gets wrecked by p-don, quagsire, ho oh if he's not running any electric moves. M ray and Mewtwo just were too strong in their op gens. They were far more powerful than zacian is now. But zacian now is far more powerful than all the other mons in the current meta

@@ElHarmonyV stats alone is not saying much. P-Kyo is not banned at the moment, while Diancie, whose bst is just 700, is sometimes considered suspect worthy. And don't let me start on how something as Mega Audino is actually viable there. M-Ray is banned because it can abuse too many sets, from Mixed Aerilate, Spec Aerilate, Triage Oblivion Wings to Dazzling Shell Smash Sweeper. You can counter one of them but not all of these set at once, so it really puts a lot of pressure when team-building. In a meta where everyone has to already prepare for a tons of threats like other -ate abusers, Normalize Gengar, Impostor Chansey, Sturdy Shed, adding the threat of M-Ray and P-Don (P-Don tinted lens choice band V-Create 2HKO every single non Flash Fire/Primordial Sea viable wall in the metagame which is stupid) is too much for one team. @@shudeepta Galarian Weezing neutralizing Slow Start would not automatically make Regigigas good. Personally, I don't really care how good Rayquaza is, it's just my favorite legendary. That being said, the more powerful, the better. Also, lucario being my favorite non-legendary makes me happy that they work well together.
It was also one of the funniest. I know it made me laugh when they took an already broken mon and elevated it to what its legend says, being able to bitchslap Kyogre and Groudon at once.
@@xt6997 Ultra-Necrozma is far from the Mega-Ray level of broken. It has to hold a specific item to go Ultra, preventing it from running Life Orb or Choice Items, and its stat is not even equal to the two Primal Mons. It also has a quite mediocre typing unlike that of Primal Groudon. In fact, the most offensive form that Ultra-Necrozma can run is outright beaten by Extreme Killer Arceus, who has been in Uber for years. Yes, you can counter my arguement by stating that Necrozma has the element of surprise, because people would most likely expect a Dusk Mane Necrozma instead of the Ultra one. But such is the threat of the Dusk Mane itself. The ingame UN is so powerful because it starts off at +1 to every stats, and most likely out-levelled your party at that point. In a straight and fair confrontation, and in team-building, at least in single, Mega-Ray is far more oppresive than Ultra-Nec ever was
I found a small mistake. It is said that VGC 2010 is the first year where you could bring two restricted Pokémon per TEAM. While that was the standard for 2016 and 2019, in VGC 2010, you could bring up to four per team, but two per BATTLE.

*10 Ways To Beat Mega Rayquaza: By Yours Truly* 1. Use your own Mega Rayquaza against it (AG in a nutshell) 2. Use a Power Herb Geomancy Xerneas and hope it doesn't have Extreme Speed after you take a big hit 3. Force it out with a Primal Pokémon by switching the weather up on it 4. Have Stealth Rock get rid of potential Focus Sash (Or just use Fake Out lol) 5. Literally any Choice Scarf high power Dragon STAB (works even better after rocks) 6. Have a Marshadow steal D-Dance boosts with Spectral Thief and then troll it with Shadow Sneak afterward 7. Trap it with Mega Gengar and try to catch it with a well timed Destiny Bond (it can also learn Taunt to block D-Dance) 8. Lure out V-Creates, Draco Meteors, and Dragon Ascents to force it to lower its own stats, thus forcing either a KO or a switch 9. Be that guy who uses a Smeargle with Spore on it just to ruin their day 10. Just don't play Anything Goes to begin with
Raphael Kefas Y.H There’s a few Ghost-Types that can run level 1 anti-Rayquaza sets. Mimikyu is worth noting as you don’t even need a Focus Sash most of the time because of Disguise.
Riccardo Pelino The Mimikyu strategy also works with this. Trick Room into Destiny Bond beats any all out attacker set, and Taunt can be used as well to prevent Dragon Dances.
It’s crazy that Scizor, Lucario, Metagross, Ludicolo, Gyarados, Flygon, Kingdra, Tyranitar, Kabutops, Salamance, and Swampert could hang with the likes of Rayquaza, Deoxys, Mewtwo, Darkrai, Garchomp, Groudon, Dialga, Kyogre, Lugia, Ho Oh, and Palkia.
So anything goes... So sucker punch without the opponent attacking? Transforming into a transformed Pokemon? Bouncing back a status move on to magic bounce and then it bouncing back until the battle times out? Sounds like a crazy place
