What if all this time we’ve been greedy for the wrong things? What if the work we're doing to solve the world's problems is destined to stay small and ultimately fail? In this talk, filled with gripping stories and humbling experiences, Hawah Kasat, an award-winning community organizer and leader, explores some of the deep illusions behind the social sector. In a world that is crumbling between our fingers, is it possible that traditional non-profits are actually distracting us from solving the underlying problems that make them needed in the first place? Hawah invites us to reflect more deeply on whether we are spending our time and energy effectively. As non-profits struggle to gather the sparse resources provided to them through philanthropies, Hawah asks-what if we fundamentally rethink what non-profits and businesses look like? What if we start with the premise that helping a few struggling people when millions are suffering is not good enough? What if we get more greedy and stop being content with anything less than lasting, systems-level change? If we want to solve the biggest global problems we’ll have to unite all sectors of society and dare to become “a different type of greedy!” HawaH has dedicated his life to teaching about solutions to violence and ways to peace and has traveled to over 42 countries to facilitate interactive workshops, dialogues, perform poetry, and teach yoga. He is Founder of “One Common Unity,” a non-profit that inspires a culture of non-violence through music, arts, and education. Hawah has authored 4 books, produced 4 documentary films (including the acclaimed “Fly By Light”), 2 musical CDs, and is the creator/ editor of “The Poetry of Yoga” book anthology featuring Grammy award-winning musicians and master yoga teachers. In 2019, Hawah was the recipient of Georgetown University’s “Legacy of a Dream” award honoring an inspirational emerging leader whose work embodies the values and spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. @everlutionary

Absolutely! The old models are not efficient and have us spinning our wheels. We wonder why social change is so hard and difficult and it is because we are working in systems that are not designed to help us succeed. Sadly, so many of us get burnt out in the world of non-profits because we seldom have the resources to make the real change that the world requires and needs.

It is hard and a bit dicey to recast the word "greed" which fundamentally is flawed. But if people are going to be greedy then let's at least be greedy for creating healing, equity, and justice in the world!

"nonprofits, philanthropies and charities are a distraction" - this puts into focus what I've been feeling for years in this work. We are distraction and are complicit because we are making people in power feel ok with continuing to ignore the deep systemic issues and challenges we are facing. We need to stop and be better. I feel like the world has been telling me to be satisfied with throwing a handful of starfish the water and I'm not. We need deep shifts culturally to achieve an equitable non extractive world. I like the idea of reclaiming the idea of greed. I'm here for the greed of kindness, compassion, and deep deep problem-solving. Thank you for this talk!

Thank you for tuning in and listening with such care. It is wild, the more I share my feelings on this topic the more people I am finding that have also been having these same thoughts for years. We have to dream bigger and be more effective in how we are strategizing and creating social change. We are rightfully tired of working for a system that is not designed for us to succeed. They (meaning the large corporations and individuals who are making huge profits off of extracting and exploiting people) want to keep us distracted from really focusing on the reason we have to exist in the first place. During the talk, with irony, I clap for myself to demonstrate just how ridiculous it is. We only have to exist because these systems, institutions, and companies are allowed to destroy our communities and the environment. I appreciate you and hope that this can spark some important reflection on how we can be more impactful and effective in the future!

Beautiful wisdom Hawah. One of my favorite quotes goes something like, "It's not your job to find out what's wrong and fix it, it's to find out what's right and spread it." As you so beautifully expressed, sometimes we get so bogged down in the "fixing" within existing models, that we fail to see there are other dimensions of possibilities right in front of us. Thanks for showing all of us what's right so we can help spread it. Much Love Brother ♥

You hit it on the head. We need to be more effective if we want to create real change. We're not going to be effective using non-profit models that were originally created as a tax shelter for the ultra-wealthy. Non-profits are not going to solve the underlying problems. We need businesses to revolutionize their practices.

Yes Hawah! All power to all people! Essentially we have a global pattern of people using people, places and things to empower themselves while devaluing others which is not sustainable. We need to start over or balance it back out, we are all humans living on planet earth, there is enough water, food, shelter, health care for everyone, it's capitalism and corporations that make it too expensive to live and so people die each day not because the resources are not there, but because they cannot afford them or the insurance or the racket... We all know we can all do better, together!
@everlutionary
@everlutionary Год назад
Absolutely!! And it's that perpetual greed of accumulating more and more than we could ever use or need that keeps people living in poverty and without their basic needs met. And then we create Non-profits and charities to try and "make things better," but all we do is fall into the illusion and trap of social change.

EXCELLENT!!! 🔥🔥🔥 Hawah is 100% correct... we must build a just world in which non-profits, charities, and philanthropies become obsolete. 🌎 As Desmond Tutu famously said, "There comes a point where we need to stop just pulling people out of the river. We need to go upstream and find out why they're falling in.” 💜 Well done, Hawah ~ thank you doing such AMAZING work in the world, and for giving this excellent TEDx talk!!!

And this is how and why I think BYV remained successful even when corporate chains started encircling you. Thanks, Dan! Creating a non-profit was a deep joy but also a large tax on life. We have created a system that really sets up leaders for failure. If we can instead leverage hybrid business models that have built-in guiding values that are not just about only profit, then we can start addressing the root causes of problems. I hope this conversation can flourish here.
@SteveNagaiMa
@SteveNagaiMa Год назад
@@everlutionary I appreciate the point about government guiderails in the video here though. We can't expect business to simply do the right thing. The system is set up for business to make money only, and if we want that to change, government and policy need to play an important role.
@everlutionary
@everlutionary Год назад
@@SteveNagaiMa - Absolutely. We need governments that are creating effective oversight through good laws and policies. We can't just expect people to do the right thing. We've been trying that formula for centuries and look where it's gotten us.

Yes!! Some awesome insights here... traditional nonprofits are set up to fail; corporations that donate 1% will never lead to the change we need; it's not enough to help the individual starfish when a beach full of starfish are dying. We need new models, systemic change, and a focus on root causes. Thanks Hawah for the inspirition, passion, and greed for good!

businesses are like restaurants, non profits are consumers eating at the restaurant, and waiters are the victims of societal issues. we’ve created a culture where its ok for businesses to not pay people enough because its justified with tipping culture (not saying tipping is bad, tips should be given along with living wages is all), similarly businesses are not ever obligated to help humanity, and often co opt non profits instead of taking their own resources to create them or take part of their profits and help people. we just assume at this point that we cant expect corporations to do anything in society other than take from producers and consumers. you’re right, we need to change the very soil those seeds of thought were planted in.

I Ike the waiter analogy. We figure - someone else will pay my staff. Weird model and as Hawah says really a distraction from the need to actively engage in our employees and our communities. We need to challenge these thinkings. Restaurant owners are not the problem of course. The problem is we are using outdated thinking and systems that just don’t work. We need a big rethink. Great talk! Appreciated the provocative title and the way it refocuses greed towards large-scale social change and not being satisfied with the status quo. A lot of ideas could use follow-up. What are the best examples of governments that create good guardrails for businesses and promote a rising tide that lifts all boats? What are the best examples of nonprofits that think like businesses or businesses that think like nonprofits? How can we think about ecosystems and not just individual organizations: how can organizations work together? Is there also a role for organizations that specialize and pave the way for a more sustainable solution later?

Together we can and must evolve our old broken systems into new and better ways of operating through embracing our deep interconnectedness and respecting all life. We are all in this together and we can embrace a new healthy economic system; one that merges the best learnings of business and nonprofit models, and replaces both with a new holistic model that is so much better.

Hawah.. all of your hard work speaks for itself. That was Brilliant and Illuminating, and perfectly encapsulated the Spirit of Truth and change-- a change that is long overdue. It will definitely take more than the limited efforts of non-profits, charities, philanthropies, and well meaning individuals to make the required change that is necessary for all Life to survive. For far too long, we have been invested in systems which do more harm than good.. so it is time for Humanity to find a Better way. You are right.. we do have to build a world where non-profits, charities, and philanthropies are obsolete; a world where we make careful choices, which do not negatively impact future generations. And, we do need to innovate new models of operating.. ones where Peace, Kindness, Compassion, and Generosity are the foundations of all that we do. But, how do we create the kind of "Greed" within the human condition, that will facilitate the change which is required of humanity at this juncture-- seeing that everything is crumbling? And, what role does Love play in this equation? Seeing that it is the lack of Love which has allowed this system and other negative elements to take root, how do we promote Love in such a way, that it paves the way for the kind of "greed" you are advocating? We do need to create a new legacy.. one where all people, businesses, and governments are involved and invested in the continuation of all Life. And I believe, that it is forums such as this one, which will begin the process so that we all may have a Better future. Thank You Hawah for this outstanding TED talk.. and for all your efforts in elevating humanity to a Better place of being....

This is such a big idea. I’m going to have to think on this and revisit it. I salute your hard work helping kids and society. I too have spent my life in this arena. I too feel I have done great things for many kids. But there were always more. More on my list. More that will never make it on anyone’s list. Never enough resources. Never enough time. Lots of folks patting me on the back. Maybe donating $100 to the cause and walking away thinking “someone” is working on this and I helped. They don’t bother to think about the problem or the solutions because they think there is someone else working on this. That is a mistake. Many of us are working on this and trying but we are only addressing 5% of the problem. It’s far from fixed with your $100 donation. I mean, I appreciate you and your hard earned money folks but it’s not enough. We need to fix the society problems that are driving all the symptoms we are addressing. A revenue model is a great idea. A big idea. We need lots of folks “thinking” about how to do this. Count me in!
