Mobile Suit Gundam Wing, also known in Japan as New Mobile Report Gundam Wing (新機動戦記ガンダムWウイング, Shin Kidō Senki Gandamu Wingu), is a 1995 Japanese mecha anime series directed by Masashi Ikeda and written by Katsuyuki Sumizawa.
Gundam Wing aired on Cartoon Network's weekday afternoon after-school programming block Toonami, premiering on March 6, 2000 and almost immediately exploded in popularity.
The Gundam franchise was finally big in America, ushering in all kinds of merch and Gunpla, making Gundam more mainstream in the US than it had ever been and paving the way for a broadcast of the original Mobile Suit Gundam and Wing's sequel Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz

The Iron Blooded Orphans toonami Promo tried to recreate it. The IBO Trailer was sort of a mixed bag. I like how it was honest with the brutality by having Mika execute somebody on screen. on the other hand, "Those who oppose them... fight." doesn't have the same bite as "Those who oppose them... Die." It also helps that the Wing promo (and the 0080, 08th MS team and 0079) had Optimus Prime hyping up Gundam.

It's SO interesting that Wing was originally written and created to appeal to the female demographic, similar to G being marketed for kids the year before. The five young pilots were even designed to emulate a boy band. But both in Japan AND America, ALL demographics ended up digging it beyond expectations

sunrise then took their experiences with wing about targeting the female demographic, and upped the "pretty teens with problems" to 11 when they made seed, to even bigger success in japan (although it never truly caught on in the west), also...the female fanbase it garnered caused some...fujoushi opinions to leak out on online forums, to the point some female fans wanted relena dead so heero could be with duo and the like, to boot most fanfiction about wing tended to be yaoi-based rather than focusing on the war or politics...you know...captured pilots interrogated by zechs/treize, which tells you the targeting was successful

Gundam Wing was a big deal to me and my friends from high school. It was something we could be openly fans of without being pegged as nerds. The theme of war and hard action compared to American cartoons gave it an air of “grown up” material despite the fact that its core appeal is really no different than something like Transformers or Power Rangers. We were just watching to see the colorful robots punch each other and used the actual mature themes as a deflection.

I'm 36 now, still a Gundam fan, albeit more into Universal Century than the alternate timelines. @@tendoukiryu6989 That's Japan, the US is a different story. Nobody thought that in a million years Bandai would give up the Power Rangers toy line, let alone that Hasbro would buy the entire franchise (TV shows and toys) completely. Sure, owning and licensing are two very different things and Hasbro could never own Gundam, but these days Bandai America barely handles Gundam themselves, they have other distributers like Bluefin or Bandai Premium (part of Bandai Japan) do it for them, it isn't impossible for Hasbro to want a piece of that. Bandai's grip on America isn't as strong as it used to be, they've passed on toy lines that people were sure they would license like Yo-Kai Watch many times recently. I'm honestly surprised they haven't pulled out of the market entirely, most of the stuff they sell are niche products like Tamagotchi and the anime figures that Dan mentioned you can buy at Walgreens. Bandai is no longer a fierce competitor to Hasbro, licensing for a quick crossover isn't entirely impossible if they can convince Bandai Namco. Problem there is that Hasbro practices something in Transformers called "brand unification" with Takara Tomy. Hasbro can't make anything Transformers related that can't also be made available in Japan and vice versa and Takara Tomy could never sell a Gundam product in Japan just like they can't sell a Macross toy (G1 Jetfire).

@emerje0
@emerje0 2 года назад
@@tendoukiryu6989 Ahh, I see you don't know how any of this works. As an entertainment company Bandai Namco Holdings is pretty big, but they make the bulk of their revenue from video games and anime. Hasbro's revenue is only $1B less than Bandai Namco's and they're an actual toy company that dabbles in entertainment. Bandai Co. the Japanese toy manufacturer counts for less than half of the revenue of Bandai Namco. In America Bandai Namco's toy presence isn't much at all, walk down a toy aisle and you'll be hard pressed to find their logo printed on anything aside from the small collectibles section near electronics. In reality the three biggest actual toy companies in the world are Lego (by a lot!), Hasbro, and then Mattel with Bandai Co. coming in around fourth place for actual toy sales. Again, Bandai Namco doesn't publish the actual revenue of their 5 core "units", but "Toys and Hobby" make up less than half of their net sales and operating profits with the bulk going to "Network Entertainment" (video games).

Those trailers Toonami made for all of their shows did incredible jobs of promoting each and really building up the hype for them all, I still go back and watch them every now and then because they're just so well done. Looking back on it, it's staggering to me how thoroughly anime has taken hold in commercial culture here in America, because I still remember a time when I'd have to get up at 6am just to see a single episode of Dic's Sailor Moon dub back in the early 90s, and I couldn't talk to my friends at school about anime because they'd have no idea what the hell I was talking about. You really have to credit Cartoon Network and Toonami for planting the seeds and encouraging the growth of anime in the US - I have no doubt anime would still be in the dark ages in the US without them.

When Gundam Wing was announced I was SO hyped. I had vaguely heard of Gundam through fanzines, but that was my first real exposure and I had never seen anything like it. And hell yeah I bought some kits! Or rather…I bought a big Wing Gundam Custom kit that turned out to be a bootleg with a red face and red wings 🤣

There were so many bootlegs of everything back then. I remember the stores in the mall that were nothing but bootleg anime merch. SonMay CDs no one knew were pirated until a few years after they'd been selling through conventions and shops, "official" DVDs of series that hadn't aired in the US yet, model kits, proplicas, all of it. About the only non-bootleg things you could buy at those stores were wall scrolls.

After growing up on Power Rangers and then getting into anime fighting robots thanks to Toonami's airings of Voltron and Robotech, Gundam Wing was an easy attention-grabber for 9-year-old me. It really was a nice contrast to DBZ too (plus Pokemon), being more complex yet still loaded with action. The English dub of GW was also much more accurate than DBZ too, besides being far less Americanized than Voltron and Robotech (not that it mattered to me back then, since I didn't know the difference between anime and American cartoons). I used to have that big toy version of the Wing Gundam from this video's ad at 9:07 too, but I eventually lost its wings (boo hoo).

Gundam Wing was my very first Gundam series and my gateway drug into the wider world of mecha anime. I'll never forget flipping through the channels one day and catching an episode on Toonami just as a legless, incomplete Vayeate suddenly activated its beam cannon and nearly succeeded in blowing away the five Gundam scientists, stopped by its brother unit Mercurius's remote-guided "planet defensors" just in the nick of time! Ninja Turtles and Power Rangers had been fun as a kid, but this Gundam stuff was on a whole 'nother level. I was instantly hooked and I've been a lifelong Gundam fan ever since. Wing isn't my favorite series in the franchise by a long shot these days, but it will always hold a special place in my heart.

GUNDAM. IS. MY. S**T!!! I was THE target demographic when Toonami first started airing GW. I was a fan of DBZ before that, but after I saw Gundam DBZ seemed like it was for babies. I instantly fell in love with Gundam, started getting the model kits and everything. GW was awesome because the characters actually CHANGED and evolved, people died and STAYED dead, there was nuance and political intrigue. Let’s be honest the most character development in DBZ was when a dude’s hair turned yellow and his eyes turned blue. Gundam always had more depth and complexity. And look, no shame on DBZ; it’s a totally different kinda show than Gundam, I only draw comparisons because Gundam came on right after DBZ. I have a theory that most of my friends secretly liked Gundam more than DBZ too, but we just never told each other because DBZ was super popular at the time and we didn’t wanna be outcasted from our already nerdy outcast friend group for not liking DBZ as much as GW. Though we all liked both anyway. Still there was a weird nerdy peer pressure to like one more than the other. Dumb kid thoughts. After GW Toonami aired the original series, in part. I don’t think they ran it in entirety though, it under performed. I think a large part of that may have been backlash to the dated animation. But honestly I absolutely loved it, and I still love the UC Gundam timeline to this day. It’s literally a sprawling epic masterpiece. At any rate Gundam is still under appreciated by Americans. It’s pretty popular but it should be HUGE and I don’t know why it never took off quite like Attack on Titan or DBZ or Naruto or One Piece. Whatever, those few of us in the know know what’s really real. Gundam is like Game of Thrones meets Battlestar Galactica, who wouldn’t love that? Cheers to those of us who KNOW!

I'd think that for everyone outside of Japan, Gundam Wing is their introduction to the Gundam franchise. I had the old Wing and Wing Zero model kits before, and when they released the Master Grade versions of both, I jumped on the opportunity to get into a preorder list to get both. I still have all of them, and my collection has slowly grown from not just Gundam Wing kits but to also have some that came from other series, and including the Universal Century series. Gundam Wing may not have the best Gundam story, but it has Gundam that really looks good (both TV version and Endless Waltz version, in my opinion).

I remember being in middle school and coming back home from outdoor Ed. ready to watch DBZ on toonami, turned the TV on to cartoon network and toonami came on and the Gundam wing ad came on and I got chills immediately, that cold music and animation, I was in complete shock, first time I saw Wing Gundam I fell in luv with it, to this day Wing Gundam is my favorite Gundam of all time. The seriousness of the series made me treat every episode as if it was a private meeting and I couldn't be bothered while the show was on. Heero Yuy was one of the main reasons I kept watching the show, he cared about nothing more but defeating his opponent and his elevation throughout the show was amazing and incredible, he started out being very careless but slowly became his own person and started to care about what he wanted to care about, starting his mission with 01 Wing Gundam and eventually ending his journey with the iconic 00 Wing Gundam zero custom. As a kid i wanted a Wing Gundam model kit so bad but toysRus was sold out, I remember being with my Dad one day jus driving around and he stopped at a shopping center to go to a auto shop, and I saw a store near by that had anime posters on the window, I told em I'll be in there and I ran. When I entered the store there were Gundam kits everywhere, and when I kept looking there it was, a 1/144 scale Wing Gundam kit, but I noticed it wasn't the same packaging as the one in toysRus, it seemed a bit older plus everything was in Japanese, eventually my dad got it for me and I was on cloud 9. Now as an adult I have tons and tons of kits to high grades to master grades to real grades you name it, before as a kid I didn't really take painting my kits or any of that stuff serious I just wanted to build them but now as an adult I have my own shit and now I have my own area where I build and paint my kits and now I'm serious about model kits today and it's so cool and fun

Gundam Wing was definitely how I found out about Gundam. My brother and I, along with our entire D&D circle, started watching Gundam Wing and DBZ (and, once I got everyone else to give it a try, Tenchi Muyo!) and got a bit obsessive about them. (And we weren't exactly kids; we ranged from 20 to 28.) My brother started buying up the DVDs and lots of snap-together Gunpla kits, so every weekend during our D&D games we would be circled by tiny versions of Heavyarms, Sandrock, Deathscythe Hell, and Wing Zero. And I'd have my insanely cool McFarlane Toys Ryoko and Tenchi action figure besides me. (I'm still a bit obsessive about Ryoko... 😍) PS - Who else thinks the G Gundam creators had seen Robot Jox?

Wow, I had just watched the Mobile Suit Gundam video this morning, and this pops up in my notifications right before quitting time! Like I mentioned there, making Gundam Wing the first series in the franchise the entry point from the view of Bandai Entertainment USA, and getting it to air on Toonami, was a winning strategy. It better fit with DBZ and Sailor Moon, but I did overlook the significance of the uncut version being aired during the Toonami Midnight Run block. I forget which early episode it was, but I remember watching the scene where Heero was locked down to a examination table and could hear something dripping in the room, yet there was nothing to be seen. Had to wait up a few hours to see that episode re-air to see... yep, that was Heero bleeding while laying unconscious. It was crazy to me. In any case, I was able to buy a VHS with the first 3 episodes on it, some of the action figures (sadly not the Tallgeese III 😔), and some packs of the trading card game; I still have them. Since then, I dove deeper into the franchise and have it as one of my top favorites. Gundam Wing is now more likely to be my 5th or 6th favorite Gundam series, but I may never have had any interest if not for it airing when it did.

The irony is I tried to watch Gundam Wing when I was in college and I couldn't get into it, all of the characters just felt too whiny to me. Also considering how many shows were changed so much to Americanize them I will always give Digimon credit for never trying to rework the show to make it set in America or hiding the fact that it was a Japanese show. Just a thought I had watching this video.

Wing Gundam is the only gunpla I actively collect... It aired here in the Philippines earlier than the US and it was my first Gundam series. Speaking of ainme and plastic kits that were popular around that time, there was this anime that became popular here called Let's & Go. It started the 4WD Tamiya model kit racing craze that still is quite popular here until the pandemic hit. Did that craze ever hit the US?

I don't think it did. Saying it as a fellow Pinoy, but it was niche at best in the US, and the anime never aired there. There are at least pockets of Mini 4WD races in some areas in California. Ironically, my first exposure to Gundam was not through Wing, but by the model kits. (First Gunpla for me? The SD Full Armor and Perfect Gundam combo set, with the set having the unfortunate name of "F.A.P Gundam".) That was back when the Ganso SD Gundam kit line was available in most Philippine toy stores, and of course Wing aired first on GMA like in the US through Cartoon Network, and like the US, G aired next (and that was the 1st Gundam show I was watching everyday on GMA).

I had no idea Gundam Wing had this much of an cultural impact! Grounding the fantastic elements in war drama made it compelling. _Colonel Zecks was right!_ Arcane follows that trend by rooting the ridiculously fantastical League of Legends deep into crime drama. It works insanely well and I binged it twice! The second time with my folks this past Thanksgiving. What’s amazing about that is that we would watch the first 30 minutes of Akira immediately following all of Arcane (it was late and some of us would need to head home, but still). Akira was also something a much older relative (who loves his DC/Marvel) had _never_ seen before! Who knew all of this was thanks to a show on Toonami! Great Stuff, as always!
