The 'Lost Rambos' of Papua New Guinea: how weapons and Hollywood changed tribal disputes.
Subscribe to The Guardian on RU-vid ► is.gd/subscribeguardian
Tribal fighting has long been present in the Papua New Guinea highlands, but the influx of modern automatic weaponry in the 1990s turned local disputes into lethal exchanges that threatened to permanently reshape highlands culture. Bootleg copies of the American film Rambo circulated in remote communities, becoming a crude tutorial on the use of such weaponry. The influence of the film was so pronounced that the term Rambo is now used in Papuan dialects to describe hired mercenaries who are paid to support local combatants in violent tribal disputes. Here we meet the fighters and the peacekeepers trying to navigate a path between tradition and modernity.

As a highlander , this is one of the best documentaries about life in the highlands of Papua New Guinea, not all regions in the country are the same. Tribal warfare is an ancient tradition but now with illegal firearms, payback killings and land disputes this clearly shows why it's hard to stop such things from happening. But understanding why , is more important.

Well done. It captures the feel of the PNG highlands well. One thing that annoys-- why dub in a bird song from South America (Screaming Piha). It is like every filmmaker that shows a jungle scene thinks this bird has to be present. It is not. It is as out of place as showing the Eiffel Tower in Bermuda.

Yes this documentary great.. Yet it does not tell the whole story or represent us as a whole.. PNG is more than what is presented in this documentary.. There are more than 300 tribes in our country and 830 languages spoken by our people.. This documentary is merely a friction of what Papua New Guinea is about or has to offer

This is exceptionally well shot, edited and directed. Strongly reminiscent of Malick's thin red line, which is not surprising as it's shot in a similar part of the world. Holds the torment of the people and the beauty of the place together admirably without the incredible cinematography overwhelming the deep felt heart of the piece. Can I see any other work by this team anywhere?

This makes me weep for the strong people of Enga. Many of the people in this documentary were speaking tokplace rather than the common language Tok Pisin. If the two different tribes do not share the same language, which is common in the Highlands, perhaps the use of Tok Pisin between members of the two sides could help to create more empathy and dialogue between the different tribes. Talking with other people makes all of us understand that we are all mostly the same. We want a better life for ourselves and our families. In a way, this makes all of us wontoks with one another. "We are fools to make war On our brothers in arms"

No doubt these territorial disputes are being exacerbated by tensions at the border with Indonesia, and recent mining expansions. It's a volatile mix. The tagline at the end of the production characterises this as an intrinsic problem, and while the traditional headhunter image of PNG remains potent, there are globalised factors at work here.

Has such rich subject matter, absolutely ripe for an amazing documentary. The delivery is not there though I feel - specifically the cuts to cinematic dramatisations (?) which are both weirdly fetishistic and entirely without context. Why are they there? I have a sinking feeling they were just to add a reductive tribal "vibe". They feel especially awkward post Act-of-Killing. I would love to see another documentary on this topic though, it's fascinating!
