How Halo: Reach Makes Players Despair

Playing as Master Chief during the Halo trilogy made most players feel pretty powerful, but in Halo Reach, Bungie chose to go in a different direction entirely.
While players do still get to kill wave after wave of covenant, it's not a sense of hope Bungie encourages them to feel during Halo Reach's runtime, but instead, despair. And nowhere is Bungie's commitment to evoking that feeling better demonstrated than across the missions Long Night Of Solace and Exodus.
In this video, I examine in more detail the design behind both levels and why the story they tell is effective at making players so quickly transition from feeling hopeful to hopeless over just two relatively short missions.
If you enjoy the video, do consider subscribing, and thanks for watching!

I feel like the ending of Long Night of Solace works so well too, as Auntie Dot saying the line of "Slipspace rupture detected" over and over, especially in that slightly monotone voice, always makes my heart drop.
@Shot5hells
@Shot5hells 2 года назад
I think the radio chatter works well with that. There's auntie dot which is essentially just a warning system, and then there's the escalating panic of the people picking up that signal. Similar thing happens later with the evac transport being shot down, before it leaves you can hear UNSC officers and stuff communicating with the ship and urging them not to take off, and the impending sense of there being no choice as the covenant are literally about to break through. Reminds me of the E3 trailer: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-s3MabEog3yQ.html

@Garthorium
@Garthorium 2 года назад
Kat's death has 2 major things working for it; its spontaneity, and the message it actually conveys. The sudden shock of it happening is hard to fathom because it quite literally comes out of thin air. There's absolutely zero build up, and it occurs in a locale that seems reasonably secure. Hearing her voice cut out and her body go limp in the cascade of it all really hits it home. In a scene that was reasonably tense already, it coming so far left out of field completely pulls the rug out from under the players feet. The message it conveys is where the real despair takes place. Through all of the Halo games to this point we've visually and verbally been communicated that Spartans are the cream of the crop. They're nigh invincible, indestructible. A ferocious killing machine of lethal wit and skill. Kats death strips away all of our predispositions and lifts the veil in that Spartans really are just like us, their lives are as fragile as ours, and they can be taken away at any moment. The sudden impact of the shot, paired with the promotion that Spartans only ever die on their terms is an excellent twist that turns us on our heads because it conveys how unfair life can truly be, even for those we deem the best equipped. It's a standout scene in what is otherwise a rather, underwhelming overall grand narrative that I personally don't think displays the actual desperation of the struggle of Reach. There should have been a lot more gameplay segments of the player and their efforts actually failing, rather than the cutscenes conveying bitter-sweet comforts.

That, and the fact that you slowly lose members of your team, like Kat being shot in the head, Carter flying into a scarab, saving you and Emile in the process, speaking of Emile, he goes down like a boss, but dies regardless. In lone wolf, you are likely the only surviving human on the entire planet, having lost your entire team and given everything you got to the cause, and the covenant are coming to finish the job. You (From a Noble 6 perspective) don't even know if your deeds were worth it, or all in vain. The music, the background, was beautifully set for giving you those feelings Plus you can see bodies of spartans in the area, makes you believe wonder what happened before the cutscenes, but no matter what, it ended in death for them

What not being The Protagonist of the Halo series feels like. That despair is actually very similar to the feel of the well written Halo book series. It does an excellent job of showing where the Chief came from, how the UNSC is, and just how horrific and inexorable the Covenant's absolute purge of human existence is. 30 years of successful holding actions, brave last stands, and the grinding loss of defeat after defeat.

I personally think new Alexandria brings more despair. The city is in ruins, you see the haze of plasma and smoke on one end of the horizon, and there’s hardly any human forces in the sky unlike the last mission. Things got really dull for humanity. And as noble six, you’re simply cleaning up side missions and not exactly doing much for humanity or towards the covenant. And to make it worse, after taking the first and second jammers out, both times you see a cruiser fly overhead, only to stop and bombard part of the city, glassing it. The areas are in smoldering ruins and the night setting also adds to the depressing mood. And the conversation at the end cutscene with Kat asking if we’ve lost yet. And of course, the way it ended with Kat getting shot out of no where added a huge shock element and much more despair

NA is the culmination of despair. It is truly the breaking point, where all but the most mentally resilient would have given up. Exodus is the rapid descent into despair. It’s the denial, the mental combat to continue, and ultimately fail, to grasp at hope. To say which is worse is subjective. To slowly sink into the darkness as you watch the light shrink into the distance, or already be cloaked in the inky void of despair. One is the pain of loss of hope, in knowing that even your best actions have consequences on not just yourself but others as well, that they will never be enough; the other you can at least take relief in utter helplessness.

Turns out Cortana saying the reason she picked Chief wasn’t because he was the strongest, the smartest, the best shot or best fighter, he was actually middling to average in almost every test, and apparently he is even short compared to most Spartan II’s. But he had one thing, he was lucky. So lucky that he literally past tests confirming that if given a blind pick he will choose the correct answer far more than average. And he was a determined fucker, and wouldn’t back down for anything. She chose those two traits to be more valuable in War than any martial skill, because if you aren’t lucky you end up like Kat. Or any number of other Spartans that where just not in the right place and caught a bullet for it. And it was the correct choice. So much so he carried all of humanity with his determination and luck.

There's also New Alexandria right afterwards, where there's parts of the mission where you fly around the city and just watch as skyscrapers fall that once stood tall and proud. And also holds probably one of the best background pieces of lore you can witness in Halo, seeing a Covenant Super Carrier come to the city and start glassing Reach. Seeing that for me really puts the final nail in the coffin that Reach was lost and there was no hope of saving it. Cause if the Covenant are able to come into atmosphere and start anhiliating literally everything that is standing or living until it's a shining, super heated surface, then your chances of survival are miniscule and what you had fought for was for nothing

Great video and analysis of two of Reach’s best missions (in a game filled with great missions). Reach does despair very well. Personally I feel there was some despair at the end of Tip of the Spear, but at that point there was still a glimmer of hope. ODST has some despair too, though not as much overall, mainly just while playing as the Rookie and a few other moments. Plus in ODST there’s no turing point, as it goes back and forth. I never thought of Reach as making you feel powerful ever. Not just from how it starts with the shot of your cracked helmet but how in every level the threat either escalates or the human forces get weaker. First a covenant landing party on Reach - meaning defeat is only a matter of time. Then a Covenant corvette - but one that has succeeded in almost overrunning a heavily fortified base, then it is a Covenant Army - and then a Covenant Carrier - then an Armada. You know there is no chance of ultimate victory before Long Night of Solace but you think you might just succeed in buying time for most people to be evacuated from the planet but then Long Night of Solace then Exodus shows that it is more like a victory if you get even get anybody off the planet. Then for Pillar of Autumn it's just one ship that's left of the human fleet and it is going to retreat. There is no plan, no way out of this, the best you can hope is to escape with your life. Then even that becomes impossible and made all the more poignant by the fact that you know only two men out several thousand men and women on the Pillar of Autumn will survive the expedition to Alpha Halo.

One of the big reasons I love Reach and ODST so much is because of how well they remind you, after all the badassetry of being Chief and running and gunning through armies of enemies, that in this universe humanity is loosing. It's always hinted in the beginning of CE but these two games made it clear through actually being in these ruined cities and landscapes. Walking and sneaking through the torn streets of New Mombasa as a lone soldier with that looming feeling of dread all around you. To see the corpse littered city of reach and watching the evac ship get bombarded out of the sky, giving off that notion that everything was fucked from the the word go. It just puts into perspective of how for the longest time we were on the run, even with spartans becoming a new part of our push back, we had very little ground to bunker on.

One of the most impactful scenes for me in Reach was the spire mission, where players fight through gruelling Rugged terrain to ascend and destroy the shield, with only really a skilful banshee hijacking to make the mission much faster. We then fly off from the spire, seeing dozens or even hundreds more in the background each with their own battles, giving the feeling of that vigorous battle players just experienced happening a hundred times. We then see our beloved navy fire the final strike on one of dozens of spires, only to be fired upon itself by the Covenant navy. The long and difficult fight of several of Noble Team’s members was effectively meaningless, and more humans die in one blast than any Noble Team member can claim to have killed of the Covenant. As we fly off, we are left to assume the other spires won’t be taken down.

It kicked my defiant side into overdrive and rather than killing my hope it made me vengeance-hungry.....right up until that last mission. It wasn't until right then that it finally sunk in. In some of the online multiplayer maps if you looked into the background you can see the Covies Glassing the planet. That gave a better feeling of dread and defeat than the story did back then. Mainly because if they ever made their way to where our little team of spartans was making a stand against the endless hordes of aliens, we had nothing to shoot them down with. We'd just burn, and that would be that.

Late to the party but brilliant video! Another point I'd add about Long Night of Solace. The idea of despair isn't just portrayed by Jorge's sacrifice. The intro cutscene showed how the mission was a shot in the dark. Despite all odds, it was greenlighted by Colonel Holland probably because of how critical the supercarrier was and how hopeless the fight had been up to that point. During the space section, UNSC Savannah went alongside to provide fire support to Noble Six only for them to witness it and its crew be destroyed in the end. The mission throughout does a great job of saddling the player with the weight of responsibility for an impossible mission with ever-increasing human costs. That the glimmer of hope at the end is only momentary is all the more tragic. One of my favorite missions story-wise in the whole series.

when noble 6 falls from space and survives whilst a massive explosion is occurring and then more ships arrive, its the sort of thing that in any other halo game would be accompanied with electric guitars and the feeling of "more ships to blow up" but in halo reach you lose your friend, you realise his sacrifice was for nothing and that reach is most likely gong to fall after the rest of the covenant arrive. you crash back down to earth, or in this case reach. The mission after that is essentially a massive evacuation which hammers home that reach is pretty much gone. in 2 missions you went from "we are about to save reach" to "reach is gone" and it doesnt give you much time to mourn the death of your fallen friend either.

The theme music. The somber tone. We all knew what fate awaited Reach and Noble Team. What hits home is the fact that it seemed Noble team knew what awaited them. And still proceeded to carry out orders. The dynamic of starting from the beginning being the last installment from Bungie let us know how them themselves was feeling. Saying goodbye to us as they emotions of what they built has come to an end. It came full circle. A bitter sweet farewell from them and also an era. Mission complete but at great cost. But the ending monolog said it all. 343 might be in charge now but who is to say that down the line we won't get another from Bungie to bring back that essence that the rest has lost. A somber farewell with hope for the future.

The feel of not being invincible in a Halo game is the reason why Reach and ODST are my favorites in the whole series.

Covenant bring reiforcements endlessly onto the beach? Well, I finally know how I'll get that irritatingly hard par score xD PS. An excellent analysis

I wasn't too excited about it after ODST, which I thought was good but not great, but boy did it turn out well!

Mate you have no idea how many comments I've had about it. Rightfully so, as it is incorrect haha. Got them all right in my more recent Reach video, however, so hopefully that makes up for it a little!

Halo reach pared with Halo 3 ODST really drives home the feeling of despair. Especially in odst where you get the feeling of "that's it, this is how humanity ends." with both the opening and Mombasa streets.

Exodus hits a little bit harder if you've been watching the coverage out of Afghanistan lately (August 2021 as of this comment).

One thing I always do between LNoS and Exodus is change up my armor and paint job. Not like go from a red ODST to blue Hazop or green cqc, but like remove a shoulder plate, remove my helmet mods, and go from steel to silver and mute my armor accents.

Another reason I do it is to help (mental) signify the tonal shift of Reach’s story. From feeling like we just delivered a crippling blow to the covenant, only for it to be completely undone, as described in the above video.

It's an interesting comparison you made that I hadn't realized- the analogy between crashing back down to Reach and at the same time, crashing back down to reality. It is indeed poetic. As far as feeling powerful, though, I felt pretty powerful seeing the UNSC finally respond to the Covenant in Tip of The Spear. The opening cutscene to that with all the warthogs racing, and then seeing the one crew in the warthog not make the jump, as well as the ending with the spire and the supercarrier destroying frigate Grafton... There are tiny moments and then larger moments. Arguably, I'd say that Tip of The Spear was the transition from hope to hopelessness rather than Long Night of Solace. The beginning cinematic with Noble Team in the cave especially drove home how desperate the situation was for them. Hope remained, but it was already dwindling, and Covenant forces were closing in.
