Part 2 of How Hamilton Makes You Cry talks about the Descending Bass, which has been used throughout history to musically create sadness and make people cry. But as usual Lin-Manuel Miranda's dexterity with using this musical idea is something that is worth looking at for how it makes us all misty-eyed. And yes, I talk about Les Miz!

oh my gosh. I was always bugged by the fact that Hamilton sang such an upbeat song right after he found out his best friend had died, BUT NOW I REALIZE THAT HE WAS TRYING TO LIVE HIS LIFE TO THE FULLEST. BECAUSE AFTER JOHN DEATH HE REALIZED HOW QUICKLY EVERYTHING YOU WORKED FOR COULD BE THROWN AWAY. THUS THE POINT YOU MADE ABOUT "WHY DO YOU WRIGHT LIKE TOMORROW WON'T ARRIVE." GOD DANG IT LIN.

here's something interesting, too. Laurens's last words were "tomorrow there'll be more of us" when Hamilton's were "raise a glass to freedom" which were both from that song. Their last words both went back to the roots of when the group first met, and they were also each other's quotes, signifying their bond

The death of John Laurens was imo the first no-going-back moment on Alexander's journey of self-destruction (that we see in the show). The way he responds is so heartbreaking, to just bury himself in his work, unable to celebrate his victory or his son anymore because the one time he managed to stop imagining death, he lost his closest friend and all the good work he'd done to secure a legacy. From here on in, Alexander never stops racing against time, never settles down, never takes a break. Which leads to the death of Philip, implied to be a reincarnation of Laurens' memory.

The realization that the show itself is the happy ending to the characters’ longings in the show always comes to me not with The Story or Tonight, but at the very end of the story with Hamilton guiding Eliza to the front of the stage and her looking out into the audience and gasping as she realizes that their story is finally being told. Absolutely chilling.

You forgot something! When Philip was reciting his poem in Take a Break, there was a softer version of the drumbeat from the Hamilsquad introduction in Aaron Burr, Sir. It's more of a timpani, while the one in Aaron Burr, Sir is more of a bass because of the material of the table and the way Mulligan is banging on it.
@SteelBullet
@SteelBullet 6 лет назад
I'm aware it didn't make it into the final version of the show (I think its exclusion was LMM one mistake in Hamilton), but the original workshop version of Who Lives, Who Dies beautifully includes the Story of Tonight theme and reprises the Laurens Interlude, only now with Eliza reading the letter to herself...because everyone else has died.

Story Of Tonight - It can be sad, but it's overall a pretty hopeful song. Story Of Tonight (Reprise) - Pretty funny at the start, and pretty thoughtful. So the Story Of Tonight songs have been getting more and more happy, I'm sure the next one will be pretty uplifting- Laurens Interlude - *Aggressive sobbing.*

16:20 - "The story is the one you just watched." This is why Eliza's two reactions hit so hard, too. They aren't on the album, so they surprise you, AND they are so raw.
@bandotaku
@bandotaku 6 лет назад
I recognized the influences from Les Miserables almost immediately the first time I saw and heard it. Especially the song "The Story of Tonight" having a similar place in the narrative as "Drink with Me" in Les Mis. Both themes tell of young men going into a battle they may not survive but are motivated with the hope that their actions inspire others to act or at least "tell their story." And once I realized that I was swelled with emotion and kept it for a while, but didn't start crying until the very end when everyone was telling how they are continuing their "story." Especially Eliza's part, her devotion to Hamilton after his death, both in the musical and in real life is inspiring.

I remember hearing Laurens' first "I may not live to see our glory, but I will gladly join the fight!" And "Tomorow there'll be more of us!" With everyone in The Story of Tonight, and they were some of my favorite lines of that song, and when he repeated them so softly in Laurens' Interlude, it made me cry. He said it like he was trying to stay happy, reassure everyone that it was okay, that they could let him go. That he agreed to this in the beginning. And the way he paused between each word in "more of us" made it even sadder.

I've got the Jekyll and Hyde and Phantom soundtracks in my car and haven't listened to them in a couple months. Once I get through them my resistance to the Hamilton feels will have worn off. Taking a break does help with that. I didn't listen to Hamilton at all while I was in New York for a mission trip last year and cried when I listened to it on the plane heading home. Our team leader entered the lottery but didn't win. But she told me that if she had, she'd have given me the other ticket because I would appreciate it the most.

Despite technically not even being a song, I think “Tomorrow There’ll Be More Of Us” might actually be my _favorite_ song from the show. There are plenty of emotional scenes in Hamilton, but most of them can be attributed more to great writing and great acting. But “Tomorrow There’ll Be More Of Us” conveys its emotion almost entirely through that powerful crescendo and the high note just after Eliza reads the letter, when Laurens sings the titular “Tomorrow there’ll be more of us.” It hits me every single time and I’ve never failed to get chills from it. I know it’s a dialogue scene but I wish it had been included on the album.

I remember when I got the Hamilton Lyrics Book for Christmas, I was cherishing it and I was reading all the songs and lyrics then got to Laurens Interlude, read it to myself, and cried. I knew Laurens had died because I was constantly listening to the album, but when I read this and it was in detail, I cried. Soon enough I was watching animatics of Laurens Interlude and crying more, this is why I praise Lin, he is so powerful with him writing, it shatters me.

We didn’t deserve the amount of work and thought LMM put into this piece of art. Every single detail was thought out. Every character role was thought out. The musical foreshadowing that was there from the beginning. Hell, even the fact that the answer to “Why do you write like you’re running out of time?” Was answered at the very beginning was so perfect.

I noticed another cool thing along the theme of this video. In the intro song. When Hamilton’s mother dies “and his mother went quick” They also drop the melody, and in the case the beat and whisper empty notes. “No beat, no melody” I also noticed the “just you wait” is an inverse of the descending base progression. But that melody resolved perfectly with the descending progression when the whole company hits the “TI I IAH HMEEE, OH, Alexander Hamilton”

Two things I CANT BELIEVE IVE ONLY JUST NOTICED: “Why do you write like *tomorrow won’t arrive?”* Hamilton’s desperation to work driven by the sheer frustration and devastation of Laurens, who died singing about how *tomorrow there’d be more of them*, a tomorrow that never arrived. This is about First Burn, so it’s not in the show but still: Hamilton and co. proudly sang about “when our children tell your story”, but Eliza contrasts this by saying “explain to the children the pain and embarrassment you put their mother through”. Actually, this whole bit of First Burn is quite a parallel to Story of Tonight.

am i the only one who noticed that after laurens’ interlude/non stop, everything goes downhill? after hearing someone alex was extremely close too and had a very complicated relationship with died in a tragic way, he says ‘i have so much work to do’ and completely closes off, throwing himself into his work. he essentially uses it as a coping mechanism. i also really liked the point you made about him realizing even more that life moves fast, and that laurens’ death made him want to work even harder. he never shows the vulnerabilty and joy he showed when laurens was still alive until it’s quiet uptown, when he realizes that he went too far, and that him being so extremely driven and eager to take action and ‘not throw away his shot’ if you will leads to him having an affair, telling everyone about it and causing his son to die in a deadly duel. once he lost everything that he earned by working ‘non-stop’ and throwing hinself into everything he wants (his status, his son, his wife) he starts showing vulnerability again. i believe that laurens’ and hamiltons friendship/relationship brought certain strong emotions up in alexander, and when laurens’ died he shut off part of those emotions + started ‘not throwing away his shot’ even harder? idk if that makes sense. there is also a cut part in hurricane where alex says ‘the friend (laurens) who would tell me not to do it (writing the reynolds pamphlet) is in the ground’ wich points to laurens keeping hamilton a bit down to earth. after laurens’ death, alex loses himself, despite being succesfull. there are so many layers in this story it’s actually giving me a headache omg

Unlike Hamilton's death, Laurens' (And also Philip's) death was so powerful mainly because of injustice. Whilst Hamilton didn't deserve to die, we could see why he did. 'Those who run their mouths off wind up dead' there was a sense of justice there after the ammount Hamilton fucked up, no matter how sad it was. However, Laurens died for fighting for what he believed in, and the injustice comes from how despite dying for his cause, it was all in vain, and his black soldiers were returned to their masters. Same with Philip, he died for wanting to make his dad proud, for what he believed in, and instead of getting what he deserved, mercy and justice, he was killed, and it broke his family, something we as the audience know is something Philip would've never wanted to happen.

The Laurens Interlude... I love the song, it makes me pretty sad that it's not on the cast album. I listened to it before I listened to the Story of Tonight, so when I listened to the Story of Tonight, I made the connection between the lyrics... plus it was Laurens' solo ("Raise a glass to freedom...") . . . it made me cry. Hard.

1: Am I the only one who notices how, before the Tomorrow There'll Be More Of Us segment begins, the "tomorrow" is in yellow like the rest of the title, but then after it's grey, as though the hope/the color was sucked out of it? 2: Tommorow There'll Be More Of Us is technically the only full secret song/scene in the show, but there are also hidden instrumental/transitional parts, including after My Shot (which I have never seen mentioned, leading to my false belief that it was limited to the workshop audio,) the Redcoat Transition, the "someday, someday" reprise segueing into It's Quiet Uptown, and the Playout. 3: Fun fact: I went to see the Les Miserables tour, expecting to cry during Fantine's Death; unfortunately for me, I had listened to The Confrontation enough to where it threw off my cry train, not realizing that it came directly after Fantine's Death.
@HowardHoMusic
@HowardHoMusic 4 года назад
Yes, there's transition music not on the album, but I hesitate to call them songs because usually they are fillers until the new scene is ready to start. Redcoat Transition might be an exception. But yeah, maybe one day I'll talk about those transition moments.

I also love how in Aaron Burr Sir, Burr says "Fools who run their mouths of wind up dead", then right after Laurens starts rapping, foreshadowing his death. And also how the person that plays Laurens also plays Phillip, both of which are people who Hamilton has a huge connection with, both of them dying in the musical. (Laurens talks about rasing a glass, Phillip raises his gun, and finally Hamilton raises his gun like Phillip).
