Airborne School, officially known as the United States Army Airborne School, is a three-week course conducted at Fort Benning, Georgia. It trains soldiers in the skills necessary for parachute operations. The program is divided into three phases: Ground Week, Tower Week, and Jump Week. During Ground Week, soldiers learn parachute landing falls and basic parachute skills. Tower Week includes practice jumps from 34-foot and 250-foot towers to simulate actual jumps. In Jump Week, soldiers must successfully complete five parachute jumps from a C-130 or C-17 aircraft, including both combat equipment and mass tactical jumps, to earn their airborne wings.

My son was dismissed from RASP and by luck of the draw was able to go to jump school. He had just turned 18 in RASP. If he could do it, anyone can. He's currently tolerating life in 82nd. You can do it.

Just because you were dismissed from RASP, doesn’t mean he still can’t work in special operations (depending on the reason he was dismissed). I know a dude who failed RIP and made it to SF then another more elite unit.

Short answer: it is not a difficult school... but, there are parts of it that suck. Like the "airborne shuffle " everywhere (half ass jogging in boots, slower than 'double time '). And I am scared of heights, but just keep your eyes on the horizon, take a LARGE step when you exit the door and "feet and knees together" when you land& you should be fine. Lead the way.

Listen to this man any current soldiers that are in and thinking of airborne or any special operations. Also any young men thinking about joining please listen. He's giving very solid advice to all of you. I joined in 1999 serving in Iraq, and Afghanistan until a huge IED retired me after 4 tours. He knows what he's talking about. When I got in we didn't have information like this at our finger tips and I truly wish we would have because knowledge is powerful. Keep up the amazing work brother.

Thank you for your service (I’m being serious and genuinely mean it.). I respect dudes who clean toilets on tiny ships with miserable jobs equally to the most elite Delta Force operators because you all volunteered to serve your country equally. Unfortunately there are too many SOF tactical “jock sniffers” today who prioritize them as somehow being more courageous or generous than anyone else because they have “cool guy jobs.” BS - everyone who serves (and isn’t a scumbag) deserves equal appreciation and respect.

Had Staff Sgt. Bailey as an instructor back in 2001 (he had an old scroll). Not a big guy…think he was from Rhode Island. He was great…allowed me to take some time off after graduation (During RIP hold) for my brother’s wedding. Big bro had come down from 82nd to “pin” my wings on. All I had to do to get the time off was buy SSGT Bailey some beer, I think Heineken, and put it in his cooler he had in his little Isuzu Trooper…at least I think that’s what he had. Great time…pretty easy school.

I graduated Airborne school on 22Oct93, I do believe we had a zero day PT test if my memory is correct. If your in good shape physically and not a total soup sandwich I wouldn't say Airborne school is that hard but just like everything else military it's attention to detail and your body is going to take some abuse during ground week from the 100,000 PLF's your going to do but no big deal, you'll get thru it. The only thing that sucked for me was I got terrible shin splints from running in combat boots doing those slow ass 9 min mile Airborne shuffle runs but at the end of the day a little pain is worth the achievement and you are no longer part of the dirty nasty leg club and getting those blood wings pinned on your chest which I don't know if it's still a thing but was back then was something to be proud of, wearing the maroon beret was pretty damn cool too. Big picture, be the best you can be, never quit and you will achieve everything you work hard for!! FYI for all the dudes, when you rig up tighten the hell out of that harness as you don't want to get your nuts smashed once that chute opens. Airborne All the Way!!

Went airborne in August of 1986. Quite a few dropped out on runs due to the heat. Attrition was about 30%. Had quite a few females that were dropped. My female stick leader made it though (triathlete and recent West Point grad). We were sent to the gig pit for a few hours. Basically, it has gotten easier over time due to equity and inclusion.

Lost my right eye instantly. Had over 30 surgeries and spent a long time at Walter Reed. I wish i could've stayed in and continued my service, but it wasn't meant to be. My thumbnail is me waking up in the ICU in Baghdad. A general came in to give me my purple heart and i was still half out of it. To me the thing that sucked the most, which wasnt really difficult, was running for pt in the morning. The formation was huge and our instructors put the slowest people up front, turning an already slow 4 mile into an excrutiatingly slow 4 mile. It mostly just hurt due to all the extra pounding of running in place and the damn slinky effect. Was a good school though

Anybody who wanting to my I airborne when you get there and do your pt test make sure to get in the front of the line asap. A PT test was required at the beginning of jump school. Jump school wasn't hard in the grand scheme of things. Tons of pull ups, push ups, and running. I'll admit, I was a bit scared entering the c-130 for my first jump. After about 15 minutes in the sky, I just wanted them to open the door and let me out.

To me, Airborne School is the first test of whether you have the fortitude to make it to Ranger Batt or Group. You have to be in good shape, not exceptional, but above average on day one. For those who have never PCS'ed or been down range, you'll be thrown off by the wide range of freedom you have after training is over. However, take the 3 weeks in attendance to relax cause it's all downhill after graduation. The only thing that sucked was the airborne shuffle everywhere.

John McPhee said he went through airborne school hungover the entire time. Then he said RIP was so hard it was traumatic. He later ran into this sadist from RIP (who smoked everyone almost to actual death) later when he made it into Delta Force. Luckily he was in a different squadron. It’s criminal how little our government pays our soldiers yet give hundreds of billions of dollars to other countries, and the VA (except Walter Reed) is horrible and still hasn’t been fixed and is underfunded (but not VA’s from other countries we pay for) but our own, nope. I know a guy who had open brain surgery and in the middle of the operation the surgeon suddenly stopped to leave to play 9 holes of golf while this guy was laying there under anesthesia with his skull cut open and his brain exposed. When the surgeon finally returned like 4 or 5 hours later he finished the operation and did such a horrible surgery, combined with just leaving to play golf, left this awesome guy with a wife and kids, a total vegetable who can’t talk, walk, never work again, family destroyed etc. He was a very intelligent, kind & generous person. The wife tried to sue the VA and she got nothing. The surgeon wasn’t reprimanded at all and got in zero trouble and just continued on with this kind of evil. He took a great human being and might as well have just murdered him, with zero consequences for his evil. That’s the VA. Trump wanted to pass a bill giving anyone in the military or veteran the choice to go to any hospital, doctor, surgeon they want to and the government would pay for everything. Of course the democrats vetoed it. If you require a serious surgery, go to a private regular hospital with real surgeons even if you lose a ton of money, it’s better to be broke and healthy, than be a vegetable and have some money in the bank. Stories like this are so common it’s absolutely disgusting.
