Actually 12. The man's well trained in Shotokan Karate, Hapkido, Escrima, Silat, Aikido , BJJ, boxing, Kickboxing, Capoeira, Wushu, and Shaolin Kung-Fu from a Shaolin Monk at the USA Shaolin Temple(costly, but worth it) And for Blade, most likely Iaido and Japanese sword fighting too. Too bad he don't make movies no more. Still the goat, tho. 😎⚔️🗡️👌
@@vincentsweargen8436 "Now"? Homie made this very clear in certain interviews whenever talking about his martial arts background AND it's stated on Wikipedia. I don't just talk for the hell of it🤷🙄. Whatever, I don't care anymore lol.
The funny part about when I saw this movie was I had already been introduced to Blade, Whistler and his origin story on the Spiderman animated series that aired a couple of years earlier on Saturday mornings. Of course, it was G rated way the hell down in the cartoon from this movie, but seeing it in theaters I was like, "bout time we got a good super hero movie that wasn't for toddlers". You should definitely check out the sequels, the second one because it's excellent and the third because of how unintentionally funny it was
And Whistler was created FOR the cartoon. He wasn’t even from the comics but I guess he was popular enough that they reused the character for the movie.
@kyleleroy6100 I find it very amazing that an R-rated gory action horror franchise added a supporting character from a Saturday morning cartoon they guest starred in during a small arc of the show.
Fun production fact: When Donal Logue was playing Quinn in the full body burn make-up, he actually broke his jaw. So he had to be rushed to the hospital, still in full make-up, and when he arrived the hospital staff initially freaked put because they thought all the burns were real and the crew members escorting Logue had to explain, "No, this is all fake. He's here because he hurt his jaw."
I read / heard somewhere the story was that Donal Logue was involved in a bad motorcycle accident in his younger days, resulting in his jaw dislocating from time to time. That's what happened when they shot that scene with him wrestling with N'Bushe Wright, so he was taken to the hospital to sort out his dislocated jaw. Everything else about the hospital staff's reaction is on point, though. 😁
The record keeper Pearl is a reference to kingpin when he became a vampire in the comic books. Also in the comic books blade was not a half vampire he was just a vampire hunter with no powers. Blade got infected by morbius the living vampire and that's why Eric Brooks AKA blade can walk in the sunlight because morbius technically wasn't a real vampire. There are other circumstances to how blade became blade but that's the basic story.
Comics Blade is slightly less super but even more stern 😅 listing his frequent team-ups would take forever, but Spider-Man and Werewolf By Night are pretty iconic ones
27:12- Don't be racist, Frost. 27:18- Don't be stupid, Frost. If the whole is vamps, then what you gone eat? 28:43- It's about to get weird, gal. 38:05- 2 and a 3rd movie.
I was definitely not old enough to watch this movie when I watched it for the first time but it's just corny enough that I loved it. Frost is definitely something else, the actor has this face that makes him look almost feral.
Love this channel, and yes, yes, yes!! Continue with Blade, and also, you HAVE to catch Werewolf by Night. One of the best things that Marvel has done since it’s been a Disney property. It’s a short, but super enjoyable film and introduction into the Marvel monster universe.
@Mage Reacts - Yes there is a Blade 2 and it is, in my opinion. Even better as it is directed by Guillermo Del Toro ( Hellboy, Pan's labyrinth,...) so you have this very organic and cool Aesthetics to it.
This movie is pretty close to what society would be like with vampires and humans...or one telling of it. It closely resembles the tabletop RPG "Vampire: The Masquerade". Another TV series that VERY closely resembles the game is "Kindred: The Embraced". If you can find it, I VERY highly recommend giving it a watch. Maybe a reaction?
It really is Christmas! One of my favorites, I really hope you watch the 2nd one too eventually. One of the rare times a sequel was better than the 1st, imo anyways. Merry Christmas everyone!
Blade in the comics is British but outside of that the movie and characters are pretty close to the comics. Blade not wanting to drink blood is because it makes him lose control, not because of shame. Blade 2 is also good, bigger budget which doesn’t always translates to quality but an eventual Oscar winning director made great use of the extra money. Ghost Rider (2007) is another really fun pre-MCU Marvel movie. Basically the same storyline as this movie but still very fun.
I really enjoyed your reaction/review and almost as much as the movie itself, this being one of my favourite Marvel movies it was so pleasing to see you getting a lot of joy from watching so I'm most excited to see you watch Blade 2. I kind of understand that you had no awareness of this movie and the character cos it was only a few years before I came to know of the character. My favourite Marvel character is Spider-Man and in the 90's Spider-Man animated series Blade featured in a few episodes, I thought he was cool but Wesley Snipes portrayal of the character made me a big fan of him. I'm always excited for the content on your channel so keep up the good work👍🏼
In the comics Blade is more like a demon. There is a bad ass comic book series of Blade VS Ghostrider. I hope they make that into a movie someday and it must be rated R.
The Blade2 video game for Xbox was awesome. It let you strike at enemies in all directions, and when you power-up the sword comes out. It's based on the second movie, but it was a lot of fun.
This is THE marvel movie. The movie that saved marvel from bankruptcy. If not for blade , none of the marvel movies that came after would have been possible. Look it up.
If I recall correctly, I'm fairly sure the first comic I saw Blade in was actually an 'old' Dracula magazine. Not entirely sure if Blade went by that name, at the time. After all some 25+ years ago.
Great review! I have some pointers for you. You were certainly right about 'Blade Runner' here. The director Stephen Norrington is clearly a fan of Ridley Scott. He has a character in his indie movie 'Death Machine' who is named Scott Ridley, and even has the names Wayland and Yutani in that flick! Second, I showed some scenes of Blade to a Japanese student once and she freaked out when she saw that potted plant. She explained that it was a bad omen in Japanese culture. If you see it growing in your garden it means someone in your family is going to die, unless you cut out of the soil!!
You would love Vampire: The Masquerade. It's a Tabletop RPG where everyone plays vampires who have to fight their own natures, make sure that human society at large doesn't find out that there are vamps feeding on them and running many of their institutions. and also deal with things like vampire hunters and werewolves. The Vamps in VtM are organized into different clans and families that cover all the different vampire archetypes from fiction. There's a clan of classic power hungry vampires who control governments and cities, there's a clan that embodies all the sexy stuff that Vampires are famous for, there's classic Nosferatu vamps who look like absolute monsters, there's a clan that specializes in hulking out and shapeshifting into animals, and there's even a clan of absolutely insane vampires who are connected via a psychic hivemind and may or may not be able to see the future. Vampire society is divided into the Camarilla, kind a of a vampire Mafia bent on world control and secrecy, and the Sabbat, who are vampire anarchists who just want to openly feed on society without all the annoying rules.
----- @patrickwaldeck6681 ----- - Speaking in hierarchical terms... The 'Camarilla' they are a faction based on control through laws of conduct and politics. The 'Sabbat' they are a sect based on vampire supremacist ideology. Side note...: There's also the 'Anarcs'... They are a faction, a "Happy" middle-ground if you will, who fight against the oppressive rule set forth by the 'Camarilla', but equally hate how the 'Sabbat' does things as well. -----
If you liked the Vampire Politics and Society elements of the movie, I must recommend the game Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines (unless you've played it). Without spoiling anything, you really get to explore the underworld as run by the creatures of the dark.
"Is there a Blade 2?" There is and IT'S BETTER!!! There's a third one, and... it's a movie... There's a TV series and it's pretty cool but it's only one season with an unresolved cliffhanger...
Fun Fact when the actress who played Karen Jensen came out, one of the two vampire's came out of the elevator's was played was the daughter of Bruce Lee
I remember watching this in the cinema with my nephews. That moment when he caught his glasses at the end, the whole cinema cheered. It was awesome! You have to watch the second one.
I’m glad more people are watching the old Blade. This and part 2 are the best ones sadly. Trinity was good to me as a kid but now I’d barely ever watch it. 2 is my favorite one for the villain.
This movie had a $45 million budget and made over $130 million. Yeah, some of the special effects were bad (the final fight scene blood effects were terrible), but the rest of it was pretty standard action film stunts with practical effects, mostly smaller locations they could fit into sets with some damn good fight choreography.
Marvel didn't make this movie. If you saw the intro credits, it says "In Association With" on the Marvel logo...meaning, they just licensed the Blade character to make this movie.
So yeah some things were changed from the comics like the year he is born, in the comics he was born in the early 1900s and fought Nazi vampires in WW2 and can heal from injuries like wolverine and is up there in the top hand 2 hand fighters in marvel.
32:09- About to get really freakin weird. 32:19- Yep, you see it. 32:58- Yeah, about to get weird again. 32:15- Yeah, this stuff's really not for the kiddies. 44:37- Jocasta and Oedipus.
If I’m not mistaken, there has been rumours of a blade movie and game coming out over the courses of the next couple years and I have the same fear as you I hope Disney doesn’t ruin it because it has the potential to be really good as much as I understand, they have a younger audience. I feel like there aren’t enough adult superhero movies out there anymore. You can argue Deadpool, but to me that feels more like a 16-year-old boys movie than an adult movie so between Logan and Blade I definitely believe they need more rated R adult style superhero movies
People say Iron Man paved the way for the MCU. But this was the first movie where they went ham with material from the comics, and it didn't suck. I mean, except for the vampires.
The first real kick-a** vampire action thriller. Giving Van Helsing & Buffy a long-run for their money. From Marvel Comics' darker side of the universe. Inspired by blaxploitation films (namely Shaft & Blacula). Debuting 45 years ago in 'The Tomb of Dracula' comics as one of Drac's many foes. Marvel's golden age on film (1998-2007) began with Blade. The 2nd Rated-R movie for a Marvel character (following The Punisher, 1989) and the first supernatural/horror property of the Marvel Universe and first-ever Marvel character with a box office smash. This trilogy of the character was written by David S. Goyer (The Dark Knight Trilogy, Man of Steel, BvS:Dawn of Justice). Prior to being casted as Blade, Wesley Snipes as actor & producer was involved with developing Black Panther. At the time, the film rights of BP were with Sony. Snipes didn't know Blade & Black Panther were both from Marvel. History made for sure. It paved the way for more success of Marvel characters on film. Nuff respect due to the success in the arrival of The Daywalker. The first 2 films did become video games, Blade appeared in Marvel's Ultimate Alliance series and most recently, Midnight Suns. Blade will get a brand new game in 2025 from Bethesda.
If you like Adult Vampires, you should look into the "Vampires: The Masquerade" Universe from White Wolf. It is the lore for Pen & Paper rollplaying, but the world is extremly awesome and for me the Gold Standart of Vampires.
This is an awesome pre-MCU film. You might not know it, but there are quite a few of those - the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man movies, almost all of the Fox X-Men films, etc. There was even a Captain America movie. Since the MCU tends to define what people think Marvel media is, they may not know about the earlier stuff. If you continue with the Blade franchise or the other films I mentioned, remember that they tend to be much more self-contained. No one really cared about building a film universe yet. Oh, and Blade 2 is even better than this!
LOL!! I like the energy this chick is giving off. Yah I enjoyed this reaction vid. Yo I saw this in the theatre. Back then Wesley Snipes was IMHO known for dramas and action movies. I was not prepared for this movie. The opening scene scared the daylights outta me!! I was literally looking for the exit.
You can live with Anemia, I run on 2/3 normal blood level because I had to have my a titanium rod put in a 1 of my femurs dew to a motorcycle accident and I drive semi truck loading flat beds, and building houses. It sometimes get exhausting but you take a 10 minute break and then get back too it.
This was the movie that started it all, there were some Marvel movies before this, and most were low budget, very campy, and or not very successful, such as Howard the Duck. Blade's success led to X-Men, Hulk, and Spider-Man. They gained credibility and the rest is history.
There is a game coming out made by Arkane(Makers of Dishonored/Prey). Won't be out till 2027 but still. Also Meg! If you want a very good Vampire Movie and Series, its a comedy, Watch the What we Do in the Shadows Movie and the TV show. I think it will be up your alley!
I'm glad Disney is going to start having a few MCU movies R rated in the future. Next year's Deadpool 3 is supposed to be R rated. Now that Disney owns Deadpool and saw how successful the first two were, they are keeping the same rating for Deadpool 3, since it will now be an official MCU movie. The new Blade movie also has been given the greenlight for the R rating, which has made a lot of fans happy! It has gone through multiple rewrites, so I'm really hoping they have finally come up with something the fans will enjoy!
Some martial arts? Every moving he has made has been martial arts.... Wesley Snipes is a 5th degree black belt. The cutting of the flower also represents a martial arts tradition. Just FYI
