A couple of factors; -Movies are getting too expensive to make. -Movie tickets costs way too much. -Streaming has become the most convenient way to watch movies since the pandemic. -Younger audiences who are used to watching stuff like TikTok have no interest in watching movies. -The devaluation of movies after they’re released in theaters only to quickly be put on streaming in a week or so.

No one cares about Brad Pitt and ryan gosling in movies because we can see their lives on Instagram and Twitter now. I remember years ago korey bought up a quote Sidney Portier said to denzel: "You keep putting yourself out there for free, no one is gonna wanna pay for you anymore" The cost of taking a family to the theater + the convenience of cooking home food, I better see the most bombastic film making I've ever seen. It's not worth it for only 2 + hours of entertainment when I can just get multiple hours of entertainment in a 30$ video game

It has nothing to do with an overwhelming amount of options. Its the theater experience, its complete trash now. You pay about $100 for entry and snacks. Ticket prices are too high but the studios have also embraced a stupid business model ... if back in the day you could just buy Titanic or Jurassic Park or The Dark Knight or Pirates of the Caribbean on DVD or VHS say 9-10 weeks after their theatrical release ... does anyone seriously think any of those movies would have made the same box office? They are killing themselves by normalizing this idea that you can just wait a few weeks and just watch the movies at home instead.

I can only speak for myself here as someone who growing up in the 80’s went to the movies literally every week to see the newest movies out. First off let’s start with the obvious prices are too damn high for tickets, popcorn etc. now I won’t lie I used to sneak food into the theater all the time I mean I’d bring subway sandwiches, fat burger, 2 for 1 candy from cvs, I had zero shame. Even when I did buy popcorn my friends and I would split the cost and share. Following that yes options have stopped me from going to the movie theater as well. I can actually buy the movie to own, watch it at home in a comfortable safe environment and with all my snacks ready to go. Plus with TV’s like they are now you can get a theater experience at a fraction of the cost. Lastly however another thing is the lack of originality in the movies released stops me from paying a dime to see these reboots or remakes or sequels. I’d rather go find the original and buy them than go out here supporting a Naked Gun remake or a big trouble in little China sequel. Plus I’m paying for Netflix and other streaming services, what do I look like spending a month of unlimited viewing on. Streaming service on just one movie?

Another factor I can think of is that television shows have the same cinematic quality in the last decade or so. True, there are still trash on TV these days, but when a show is great, it rivals that of most movies these days. It's the fact that they take more time on character development than any film with a running time of an hour and a half or even three hours.
@Hectorferjr2

Yes. Stranger Things, Young Sheldon, Locke and Key, Chucky! and Wednesday are prime examples.
@Alice-me2qk

One of my biggest takeaways with Furiosa is that it probably should've been a miniseries mainly due to the fact that the film didn't really have time to explore the world or the characters that it had set up, especially if you're going to break the movie up into chapters, and this so coming from someone that loved the movie. Movies really need to step up their game narratively if it wants to compete with television because television has been becoming more and more cinematic while films feel more and more like disposable entertainment.

Also, movies are now sexless, bloodless, and will only allow one f word per movie, and we’ve now got unrestricted sex, blood and language in the modern Star Trek series. I’ve been noticing this since world war z where I paid to see a gore free zombie movie when I could have stayed home and watched walking dead for free.

I’ll still go to the theaters first r nearly everything, but good lort spending upwards of $30 for a ticket, pop, and popcorn can definitely be factored into my decision on whether or not I go out to the theater. I can’t imagine how much it costs a family to go see a movie these days. It used to be a simple, inexpensive activity that got you out of the house. Now you gotta plan for that movie night financially.

Why Furiosa flopped? Because Fury Road didn't have that big of an opening when it came out in 2015. It didn't even hit number 1 that year, and it lost to Pitch Perfect 2. A girls movie about a capella singing beat a stunt movie set in the apocalypse.

Other entertainment industries are also having problems. Several streamers are already in trouble. Peacock and Paramount+ are bleeding money. Netflix can't grow forever. They keep increasing prices. Streamers are starting to bundle packages and turning into cable. The video game industry is also having problems. A bunch of game developers are getting shut down. Big publishers can't sustain AAA games. XBox is selling terribly. Even though PS5 is selling better, it's not doing that well. There's probably going to be a big decline or crash for several entertainment industries and there'll be a big restructuring.

Poor patron behaviour completely ruined the cinema going experience for me. This was especially bad after the arrival of smart phones. The picture quality on my 4K tv is also far better than at cinema screenings. The studios have done absolutely nothing to justify very high priced single viewing experience for patrons in the cinema. Much like the way modern gaming completely replaced amusement arcades in the West. Charge me £10 to watch a new film in 4k at home, upon release and I'd actually pay it for every new theatrical release I want to watch. But I'm not paying any higher and I have no interest in going to the cinema any more.

The fact that marvel movies carried theaters for years. If i see ryan gosling, or jenna Ortega one more time ima throw up. Or the over use of actors. Tv has never hurt the theater before when it was in its prime. People who tubed into the walking dead season 1 also went to the movies. Marvel just released its first unanimously praised show Xmen 97. That means everyone that watched it agrees its good. Fall out just came out not that long ago. Sho gun was good,avatar the last airbender could of been alot worse but its still good. All of those shows where damn near back to back. Too high to jump at any and every movie. Between that, gas prices (to get to a theater) and concessions, it’s crazy.

I know some people will argue that it could also be because some of the movies aren't very good and that people will come to the theater if the movie feels like an event or something the needs to be seen in theaters. Kind of like the avengers or No Way Home 🤔. We will see if that happens with Deadpool and Wolverine. In addition, the theaters isn't just for dates but also for the families hence why Kung Fu Panda 4 did so well 🤔.

Honestly, Godzilla Minus One broke all expectations and has been the most successful movie currently IMO. Made with approximately $12 Million and grossed $115 Million is ABSOLUTELY ASTOUNDING and the film industry should be taking fucking notes. I think people are craving quality now that tv shows and movies streaming exclusively have set the bar on what’s A BETTER PRODUCT and is ultimately CHEAPER in the long run. 👍

It's funny that Little Mermaid did better than Furiosa and Fall Guy. But yet people will only say one of them is a flop. Even though technically Mermaid fid make it'd money back and the other two films didn't. I wonder why???

If we are burnt out on the hollywood films, America needs to bring in more foreign films and to more theaters. Parasite is an amazing movie, and then Past lives. Had to go track it down, but well worth it. Tetris, had to go out of my way to see it before streaming but it was a blast in the theater. Plus concessions costs on top of tickets gets expensive. I am lucky to have a Alamo close by, I do the seven dollar Tuesdays all day/night. Yes there is movie pass, but I am not going out to the theater to get the worth of it. So I stick to just Tuesdays as I can schedule it to see a film after work.

Movies like Green Book, Parasite, Nomadland, Coda, and Everything Everywhere All at Once winning their Oscars for Best Picture respectively is another example of how Hollywood is becoming more considerate towards the feelings of other people by making movies that are based on fresh ideas and personal experiences. I hope Hollywood doesn’t forget that movies will become tiresome if franchise movies don’t reach an honorable ending after five years. As long as a gifted writer has a unique idea for a great story to tell for a movie, then hopefully Hollywood will continue to make movies that are charming, original, and authentic by the time I’ll be 38 years old in 2033.

Wooow!!Martin hit the nail on the head!Back when I was a kid we had 5 choices for family entertainment outside of the house..Disney and other theme parks,Broadway/Harlem theatre,the circus,IceCapades,and the movies..As I got in my teens that whittled down to theme parks (Disney/Universal),stage theater plays and the movies,and now just Universal and movies..They all dropped off because of convenience (Orlando is still an hour drive from here),and cost (Universal IS MUCH BETTER)..going to the movies is better for me now because I can go on a date, or alone,no kids or family outing..But even then, remember "Netflix and chill"?.So if the good movies worth going out for are an "every now and then" experience,post covid streaming services being flooded in by numerous studios have only made it convenient for the "wait and see" factor.

In defense of that last Mission Impossible movie, had it not been released a week before Barbie & Oppenheimer, it would’ve performed much better
@JDotWill

The theatrical window is too short plus people have more options. The pandemic really caused viewing habits to switch. With that said things are cyclical. I’ve probably been to the theater every week this year, except for maybe 5. There hasn’t been a ton of quality releases with mass appeal. I’m a film nerd & I thoroughly enjoyed Love Lies Bleeding, but that movie was never going to make $100+ Million. It doesn’t have enough mass audience appeal, although ironically 20-30 years ago it would’ve probably performed a lot better theatrically. We can’t be eulogizing movie theaters when Barbie made $1.4 Billion last year & Deadpool & Wolverine is on track to have a $100+ Million opening weekend.

its just damn expensive to go see a movie at these huge cinema plexes! Think of a family of 4, tickets and concession will go up to $100 easily A couple, perhaps $50-$70 depending on what you order and those Adult prices are the highest Matinees cost might be less but that is what $30? In Canada, I went to see Furiosa on IMAX, ticket alone is $25. Add popcorn and drink, thats almost close to $40. Thank Goodness it was a kick ass movie, imagine if it wasn't? Best solution, possibly, focus more on the smaller theatres where the ticket cost and concession match the houses/venues.

@sdrh2990 3 месяца назад
Both can be hurting it. The higher you go beyond $15/ticket the more the whole "do I really need to see this?" starts to become a factor and at $20 or more a ticket, now you're really in trouble.
@dakotahsalazar6711
@dakotahsalazar6711 4 месяца назад
I need to emphasize this…expensive ticket prices? Yes. However the experience would be much more worth it if the quality of projectors and sound systems were to be upgraded. Compared to Dolby Cinema at AMC’s or IMAX - that should be the standard way to watch any movie. A lot of theatres, especially in the Midwest and past major cities, have to deal with darkened projection and traditional Dolby on standard speakers. We can literally have ATMOS in the comfort of our own home.

Paying for movies plus popcorn, hotdogs, candy and drinks can easily cost almost 100 dollars for a family of 4! It’s insane when you can get a bag of popcorn for 3 bucks compared to a bucket of popcorn for 12 dollars at the theater. Streaming ruined theaters.

I've always loved movies but I have to admit that TV right now is the place to go if you want richer storytelling and characters. Movies these days are now just CGI, repetitive IP. More often than not, my friends would ask among ourselves, "have you see Shogun?! Have you seen The Bear?!" Oh, and of course, it's all streaming in the comfort of our own homes. We're tired of shlock. And now we want character driven stories, stretched out during the season. When a certain character died in Shogun, it was more effective than what any 2 hour movie can do nowadays.

I think movies that benefit from the theater expierence continue to do farely well. These are films that are enhanced by seeing it on the big screen with a crowd of people, they are event films that get people excited and are worth the effort and cost to go. Everything else though, not so much. The days of going to the theater for a popcorn flick are over because a film today ultimately has to be worth the trouble. It has to be, unique, and interesting. To be good simply its enough now. What would have been a moderate success back 15 years ago, today just dies and goes straight to VOD. Furiosa is a good example of a good film that just isn't interesting enough to warrant the trip. Its a movie that will probably do exceptionally well on VOD but just isn't enough to draw people out. Even I want to see it but I have no desire to go to the theater to watch it. Big event films like Barbie and Oppenheimer or upcoming flicks like Deadpool, Beetlejuice 2, and Joker 2 are the kind of buzzy, trendy, noteworthy films that make people say yeah I'll go watch that. Where as the likes of Alien Romulus or Venom 3 I fear will suffer the same fate as Furiosa. Teaters are just going to have accept a new reality in which lowered expectations for everything other then the big films is just going to be the norm.

Yall Literally sound like collage interns lol…yall claiming everything except how movies themselves have no imagination anymore, there either borrowing from a old i.p diluting it in the process….or heavy handedly preaching to the audience…i do acknowledge the things you all are saying…but people will still spend money when the product is worth it….i live in the south so our tickets fluctuate between early shows which are 8$ and our night shows (which is after 3pm)….it goes up to 12$…so our tickets ain’t California tickets in the south 😂
