We just bought the Maytag Bravos XL. It was a floor model with a decent markdown. I was nervous about getting a high efficiency washer, but saw enough helpful reviews to be okay with buying one. I came across this video and all of the negative comments after the fact. But I have to say we've had no problems with our new washing machine. It does what it needs to do and works well for us. There is plenty of water to get the clothes clean, and it agitates the clothes enough to do the job. The spin cycle is pretty awesome and gives our dryer less work to do. It's a matter of loading the clothes differently, making sure you measure the correct amount of HE detergent, and using the right wash setting. Now, for heavily soiled clothes, we haven't tested it yet, so we'll see. But it does just as good of a job washing the clothes as a machine with the old agitators. Plus it's made in the U.S. We'll see if our water bill does better than in the past. Will keep you posted.

BlooMoonface Is it still working ok for you? I'm sorta nervous now. Yesterday, we bought a matching Whirlpool HE top loader washer & dryer pair (it's not being delivered until the middle of the month, we're moving in a few weeks). Anyways, looking at the video, I never expected it to use so little water. We have pets, so I'm kinda worried if it actually gets things clean.

BlooMoonface I just bought a HE topload washer and was a little concerned by some videos of low water washes but my clothes do come clean. However, you must learn how to use the cycles and sometimes use DEEP water option w/heavy soiled settings and extra rinse if you have kids with food stains all the time. Also I have found my washer to use plenty of water and clean well with normal cycles without selecting extra water if theres no significant stains. Ive had my washer for about 1month(5.3 Cabrio).

This video really helped me because I thought I had a malfunctioning machine which was just installed. I wasn't use to all of the weird sounds and thought my agitator was broken because it sounded like it was working very hard and my old machine was quiet, and a front loader. This video is so worth watching!

Having worked on major appliances for 40 years, I can say with some authority that the top load HE washers, no matter which brand it is, are cheaply constructed, and will not clean clothes as well as a traditional washer that fills with 20 gallons or so of water, and has an agitator to move the clothing within that water. Although Whilp does have a machine with an agitator currently, water levels are still reduced by comparison, and it, like almost all washers made today, are computer controlled. This presents it's own set of problems. Sure it can somewhat diagnose it's own failures, and point you in the right direction to repair, but the operational parts and the control are pricey, and if you cant repair it yourself, it will cost half as much as a new machine or more to repair the washer. Whirlpool washers built before 2011, referred to as Direct Drive models, built between 1987 and 2011, are by far the best and easiest machines to repair when they break down. If I were forced to buy a new machine today, the Speed Queen analog timer or the computer controlled machines are a good option, they should last 15 or more years and have a good factory warranty as well. Other than that, as they cost a lot more than the VMW, Vertical Modular Washer by Whirlpool, at 400 bucks, would be my choice. Roper is made by Whirlpool as is Amana, Kitchen Aid, Estate, Maytag, and several more brand names. The VMW is a belt driven system with a reduction gearbox, and other more expensive models use a direct drive motor under the tub, not to be confused with the earlier models I described as Direct Drive. Good luck.

I agree! HE models are useless for cleaning even summer weight down comforters or bedding. These machines were designed by bureaucrats that have never done a single load of laundry in their lives, or there would have been provisions for heavy loads and comforters!

I just got the Samsung washer today.I have to say it depends on which cycle you put it on.If you want the machine to fill with a good bit of water put it on the permanent press cycle....I did it and my clothes were fully submerged in the water and got very clean...Also washed a king size comforter in the machine and it came out very clean and very dry...Don't knock it till you try it,and make sure you test all the cycles to find out which works best for you.Good luck folks.

I have a 20 y.o. front-load washer 4KG ~ 8.8 lb. The shortest programm is around 40minutes and it does the job. (washing, 2 or 3 rinses and spinning around 800rpm) Sometimes if I use too much detergents, cloths need one more rinse so I can not believe that one rinse in this video work.. Also I can decide how much kilograms I put into it (1, 2, 3, 4) so it doses the water accordingly to the amount of clothes. I would never but this HE machine lol

What brand do you have? I bought an LG. One of the problems I have is if I set it up and it starts filling and then I realize I've used the wrong setting, ie normal and need bulky. If I change it, it then senses the water already in it to determine how much water it needs, thus wasting water.

+Sabrosita Pr You're 10000000% correct. I also wished I would have seen this video before. I purchased a GE HE and I can't tell you how much I miss my old Whirlpool and agitator. This thing is a freakin' joke. Mine has a huge drum but doesn't make use of it because the water only fills half the drum. It tears my clothes up because it doesn't have enough water. There are more stains on my clothes than ever. I purchased the GE with the "deep fill" option, but that's a joke. They call "deep fill" water option that only fills halfwayl. My clothes were cleaner with my old Whirlpool. I don't care that this is HE and saves water, what good is it if doesn't get clothes clean? I rather spend more money on water and have clean clothes than deal with stains and wrinkled up clothes. This isn't energy efficient because since you could only use small loads at a time, you will be washing clothes for a longer period of time. Each load on my GE is an hr because it takes a longer time to get clothes from the top to come in contact with the water on the bottom.

---- NEWER IS NOT BETTER --- it's just new --- I was excited the day my Bravos arrived, thinking my clothes wouldn't be twisted into knots or buttons torn off by a poorly designed agitator (I called my Kenmore "The Ripper"). I chose the Bravos for spin speed and the expectation of clean and unmolested clothes. Unknowingly I GAVE UP A WAY OF LIFE my appliance afforded me to have. NOW I give up days instead of hours to do the same amount of laundry. NOW waste water in the kitchen sink to pre-treat / soak items that once were taken care of inside the washer with the lid open while the tub filled with water. NOW this "Soak Joke" Bravos makes water fill sounds, does nothing for 20 mins, then drains gallons of water and soap. NOW gallons of wasted water vs previously able to fill tub, open the lid, soak overnight then in the morning close the lid and the wash cycle continues, not wasting an extra drop of water. Bonus: No extra rinse was needed. NOW the Bravos it never, never gets all the soap out, no matter how little I use. NOW I'm forced to use the Extra Rinse all the time. This thing twists and scours clothing ruthlessly due to lack of water. Washed a queen size mattress pad in this pathetic machine, yet still caked in YUCK! Maytag will not get another penny from me for the rest of my 60+ years on this planet. Newton IA manufacturing plant will have layoffs and that's bad for our fellow families must suffer because of piss poor decisions and practice. I am ashamed of US manufacturers, they just make sh*t and expect us to like it. As long as I have free will and live in the United States, I will never, never buy another Maytag nor any other "New" washing machine. They can kiss my ass*.

I have a front load LG steam washer and dryer and i had problems with it too. I have to even run the dryer twice to get my clothes dried totally. When my LG set breaks, then My next set will be the vintage old school washer and dryer set from the 70s or the 80’s. Notice that the clothes barely even got wet during and after the wash cycle, the dry spots on the clothes indicate that they might still be dirty. My mother would never own this washer. I'm an Appliance service technician. You cant sell me on the wash plate. I sat an agitator unit and a wash plate unit side by side after servicing. First I ran a load of blue jeans with the wash plate unit. Then ran the same load over in the agitator unit and the amount of dirt that the agitator beat out of the jeans was quite a bit. So the wash plate unit only rearranges the dirt.
@MyNathanking
@MyNathanking 4 года назад
John Culbertson, if you're an appliance service technician and you say those kinds of things about wash plates, that only validates what I have thought about wash plates and these new washers all along. These clothes washer manufacturers really annoy me with their new clothes washer washing ideas that only a stupid public would buy into, and then the public has to learn the hard way, and then when the public does learn the hard way, thousands of new modern washing machines will end up in landfills after those who bought all the new washers throw all the new washers out and end up buying REAL clothes washers. All the manufacturers are trying to get is sales without considering whether their new machines actually work. They ought to be ashamed of themselves.

+Mickey Cook Check out the GE 460. It’s an HE and an agitator. You can add as much water as you want. We just purchased the 680 (same machine w/o the agitator). Probably closer to what you are looking for and large and under $500 right now (Nov 2105). Model GTW460ASJWW. It also has "deep water" so you can fill it up if you want. I’ve been researching top loaders for over a year; (we have a BOSCH for 9years, and though they make great dishwashers, I have finally decided to give up on this washer. OMFG. 1 hr/15 for a small load is just ridiculous. Any “savings” from water is more than made up from electricity. And it goes out of balance so often, sometimes I forget about the wash and go in and check 2 hrs later and iti’s still rebalancing and spinning rebalancing and spinning. These GEs have the shortest (about 35 min, or so they say) normal wash time for this price. I refuse pay $1200+ for a friggin washing machine. From what I’ve learned, however, they all are a compromise even up to where you’re spending $1500 or more for a g*D* washing machine. And if you want something to really beat up your clothes, go with an LG1701 with 1100rpm spin. If you can get it to spin w/o going out of balance.

I owned this washer for 8 years and it died do to a motor problem, our washer was the dud, it worked extremely well in 8 years we had 3 issues one of them being caused from user error. It would clean clothes provided you loaded the clothes no higher then halfway, and even that was pushing it. Our model had no controller issues and in fact used more water then most other models of the bravos at the time. The washer would clean best on the bulky cycle for obvious reasons, but i was able to get a half tub water level on most cycles by tricking the washer. All in all I give my maytag bravos a solid 6.5/10 star rating and I'm glad to get a new washer.

Tip to manufacturers of this type of washer... it is not high efficiency if the clothes are twisted up damp for twenty minutes. Double the water and install a side vessel to save the used water in. We will do whites first and darks second, in enough water to save our clothes and the water.

I have been using a Maytag Bravos washer for about a month now and I am amazed at how clean the clothes are after they have been washed. I usually use the deep water wash setting with medium soil and I can definitely tell how much cleaner the clothes are now than when I was using a washer with an agitator. At first I thought I would return it, thinking, how in the world can the clothes get clean with that little amount of water. The key is the clothes get so much cleaner because the way the washer works it is like it is hand washing the clothes. My wife is from the Philippines where most people hand wash clothes and always complained how the washer would not get certain clothes clean so she would hand wash them. Since this washer uses such a small amount of water the clothes are like being hand washed by the machine since they rub together, get agitated, etc. If you use the machine the way the instructions say the clothes should be MUCH cleaner than with an agitator. I am not exaggerating when I say I can definitely tell a difference in the clean of the clothes. We also were using a top quality whirlpool washer with agitator before it quit, bearing went out. I hope to fix it and use it for back up.

Perhaps the only way for these type of washer to work effectively is to install a gravity plate from Star Trek to one of the sides. During operation, clothes will gravitate toward the side with the plate and be tumbled by the rotating basket akin to how front loaders work.

It really depends on the design. A friend has a .8 gallon Toto toilet that will seriously flush anything. The 1.6 in my apartment is utterly useless requiring holding the handle down until it uses a good 2.5-3 gallons. A well designed HE washer will clean very well and be efficient, but only a well designed one. Since most people are enticed to write reviews with a sweepstakes or giveaway promotion it's tough to know what you're buying until it's too late.

My mom used to work for Sears more than 5 years ago before they went out of business. She had went to a seminar 10 years ago, and there was a demonstration of a he top loader washer, and everyone just walked away because it wasn’t doing the right job. That’s why I will never own a HE top loader washer, especially if it is goin to use significantly less water, meaning that there would be no possible way that the clothes would get clean, because using lots of water and detergent to clean clothes effectively and thoroughly is part of what’s considered personal hygiene. I sure miss the good old Kenmore washers from the 1970s. Why? I love the old school knobs, rotoswirl agitator, belt drive, lots of water, each load takes a half an hour, plus clothes are completely clean every time. Plus it would save me time and money.

To think I replaced a 30 yr old GE top loader having an agitator, lint basket, recirc pump, and mechanical selector switch for an HE Maytag Bravo top loader that doesn't clean clothes. It takes water, an agitator, and lint basket to really clean clothes. It has no way to remove pine needles, wood chips, or grass clippings, so leaves them in the bottom of the wash tub. That means you need a shop vac stationed near the washer to clean it out. It captures coins under the pretend agitator and ties clothes in knots, intertwined with other clothes. It prides itself on creating the sharpest wrinkles clothes ever had. Need to select "Bulky" setting to use any water. Sets LD (long drain) code frequently, then won't drain without unplugging for 10 minutes, then trying the drain and spin cycle which takes another 10 minutes. If there is so much as one or two soap bubbles, the LD code crops up. Yep, you can disassemble the thing and keep cleaning the pump and filter but these parts should be easily accessed like the old lint basket. I'd swear that the engineers who design this stuff don't do their own laundry. Four years of aggravation from this POS. The high dollar "clean washer" pellets are a joke, too. No money saved, there. Time to find another brand with agitator. Money saved on water doesn't make up for having to service or buy a new washer this often.
@imzjustplayin
@imzjustplayin 8 лет назад
+old 50Grit "to remove pine needles, wood chips, or grass clippings", there is no washing machine on earth that can flush that stuff down the drain. I know, I not only repair washing machines but also do laundry. What ends up happening is that garbage gets stuck under the agitator, eventually winding up on future laundry loads. you need to more thoroughly remove debris from your clothes or suck it up and vacuum the machine if you're going to be putting that stuff in there.
@JoshuaAndMom

You should have held on to the old GE and just got it fixed. Thank god I never owned an HE top load washer because running the machine for 2 hours costs a lot of money on the electric bill, even on front loaders. I have an LG front loader and it does its job. And hopefully it will last me a long time, and if it breaks, I guess I will buy a speed queen or a vintage washer from the secondhand appliance retailer. I would NEVER recommend wasting money on a HE washer to anybody, especially over the fact that the clothes aren't even getting cleaned. and all this HE nonsense that EPA and Energy Star just started. You can also still find a 1975 Whirlpool washer, or a 1980s Kenmore 70 Series Heavy Duty Plus, or a vintage 1980s GE filter Flo at a used appliance shop or marketplace, thrift store, or even at a local flea market. They just don't make appliances like they used to.

I guarantee you all are using the top load HE or had been using it wrong. Detergent plays a big factor in these machines too. Just because it may have the HE symbol on the bottle doesn't mean it's gonna clean any better. Using tide pods, or HE tide, he turbo tide and making sure you pretreat stains you normally should even with a traditional washer will help a lot. It's all user error because no one takes time out to learn how to use their machine.
@ueg790
@ueg790 8 лет назад
I respectfully disagree with you Kyle. I bought a new TL Speed Queen last year, it's old school in design. It may not have the EPA blessing, as it uses about 60 gallons of water per cycle, but my clothes are clean, undamaged, and fresh smelling in one wash. I don't have to think about having to program it to wash a load of dirty laundry. No nauseating cute little tunes, or pretty little lights. The simplicity of design is beautiful. Very happy with Speed Queen. It wasn't cheap either.

+ueg790 it's all about preference I suppose. They are now selling old school designs but with HE power...somewhat...Best Buy had all HE washers but the cheaper ones will use more water than a true HE washer. We had this type of washer (Maytag Bravos) and liked it at first until we noticed our clothes weren't getting clean. So, we sold it on Craigslist (although it should've just been thrown away) and bought a Samsung front loader. I modified the front loader so it adds more water and it's worked great for us. However, once it dies, we will be getting a Speed Queen. By the way: the "Clean Washer" cycle on the Bravos/Cabrio models throws the HE of these machines out the window. It uses a TON of water. This cycle has to be done monthly or a dirt ring will develop around the tub.

It was replaced by a LG front loader (SQ got pushed off for now) which has been an alright washer. I'd definitely recommend a newer LG front loader over a newer Samsung. A good machine should and would get them clean without you having to do anything else than just drop 'em in, add detergent, select cycle and that is, I have never pretreated anything on my ge filter-flo and my speed queen top-loaders, can't really say that of the front loaders, even less the HE toploaders like this. I also have a small italian/european 220 volt front loader with an heater and even by selecting boil wash (water actually boiling) delivers whites with stains etc, my toploaders always delivered spotless whites with 140F tap water at max.. the laundry coming out my toploaders is always spotless...I have seen how the laundry comes out these HE toploaders and they're not even worth being called "washing machines"..... it's not that they don't wash well/good, what they do it's not even classificable as "washing"...

This causes a sewer odor that must be remedied by running a special "clean with afresh" cycle. You can see it on this video. This cycle can have no clothes and uses 100% hot water. The Afresh tablets cost about $5 each and this must be done about every 2-3 months. I wonder how much of the efficiency this cancels out?

Laundry detergents of greater concentration promote wear on clothing. I often offset the water to detergent ratio to keep my clothing clean, colorful and strong in resistance to tearing or fraying for years to come. Obviously, never putting concentrated detergent directly on clothing but rather diluting evenly as possible while the tub fills with cold water. Another advantage of having your laundry displaced with a greater amount of water, is due to the water providing abrasion resistance. This allows your detergent to serve its purpose, rather than removing debris by means of friction.

They do still make top load washers with agitators. I buy and sell washers and dryers and I get them in all the time. I have several right now. I actually try to stay away from the washers that don't have an agitator and I never buy or sell a front load.
@talitha7242
@talitha7242 7 лет назад
what's the problem with a front load? I had one once, it was ok, but when i moved i got rid of it and got a maytag bravos which i regret. Neither clean as well as an old fashion washer imo.. but i'm all ears as to what you have to say

Finding ways to conserve resources and energy is not and should not necessarily be a bad thing. However, when certain ideas such as he low water appliances (which are horribly ineffective and unreliable) are forced down the public's collective throat, without regard for sound design and consideration of the right to choose, people can feel and clearly see their rights are being violated. The clueless idiots in the regulatory ivory tower responsible for creating this debacle need to wake up and realize there are many ways an individual or community can conserve water and energy other than solely pointing the finger at washing machines. Using an adequate amount of water to EFFECTIVELY wash clothes is not and never has been considered a waste of resources because it is considered part of our personal hygiene. Something has got to give already!

Nick You're right about that. The low water toilets are terrible also. These enviromentalists need to learn how to find more meaningful ways of protecting the environment other than influencing the Government to create stupid and baseless regulations.

There will come a time when something on your old washer breaks that cannot be replaced and you are forced to replace it. That is what happened to my 28 year old Whirlpool washer. I was forced into the market for a replacement pair and ended up with a Maytag model 950 pair. I am very happy with the results. I will say the new set is unlikely to last 28 years because they just do not make them like they used to so I enjoy them while they are working fine.

We've had an top load HE washer for about 3 years now. Works great. Towels come out much cleaner and fresher versus our old Whirlpool(new one is also from Whirlpool). I can go 2 full weeks without washing my everyday clothes because the capacity is so big. And everything comes out clean. No missed stains, I barely need to pretreat. We are all very pleased with the appliance. Yes, it does take longer, that is the trade off, but it is pretty much in sync with how long the dryer takes(1 hour wash to about 1 hour dry) so no time is wasted.
