So what's the difference?
Cheap gloves are stiff. You can't really feel anything and they limit the range of movement. On the other hand, a quality glove is soft, stretchy and it looks very elegant when it's on your hand. A few years back, I was sick and tired of the same old black and brown gloves and I decided to create my own line of Fort Belvedere gloves. I wanted something that was bolder in colors. I wanted something in grey or chamois yellow which are classic staples of a men's wardrobe. As well as Bordeaux or green or other colors.
So for gloves, it all starts with a pattern. The important part is that you get different sizes that work well for men's hands no matter if they're short or small, regular or bigger long. Most cheaper glove sizes are just scaled up on a computer in a CAD program but that doesn't really fit the needs of most men.
First of all, you want a quality pair of glove leather and not many tanners can actually produce that very specialized tanning process. So you want something that is soft and stretchy so your hand can move freely. We get our sheepskin leathers which are supremely soft have exactly the right thickness and properties from Italy and our peccary leather from Germany.
Second, glove leather has to be constantly pulled and stretched because that ensures that the glove is cut the right way and later on you can move freely with your fingers no matter if you make a fist or keep your hands straight.
Now that the leather is prepared, it's time for cutting. Cutting sounds easier than it actually is. You have to position the pattern the right way. On skins like peccary where you have natural scars and imperfections, it's the skill of the cutter to put the gloves in a certain way that you get the best quality with having the least amount of visible scars at the same time without wasting leather because that would price up the final price
Once the leather is cut properly, it's time to sew them up. Basically, there are two options. You can have a machine sewn glove and a handsewn glove. Not all machine sewn gloves are alike. You basically can sew a glove inside out which is often a method utilized in China or in a lower-cost production or you can have very skilled artisans who sew them with a machine from the outside. Now when I say machine sewn that means it's a simple machine and they still have to align the leather. They have to control the stitch density. They have to get the lines straight and make sure that the interlining is exactly in the right spot so you end up with a glove that fits well and looks the part.
Which brings us to the next kind, handsewn glove. When we say handsewn glove we mean every single stitch on that thing is handsewn. There's no machine involved. Yes, that's just a skilled sewer who does one stitch at a time and just a few gloves per day. In fact, sometimes they can even just produce one pair of gloves per day. Obviously, that's slower than sewing it with a machine and because of that, a pair of handsewn gloves is more expensive.
You might think we're done by now, however, we're not. Now it's time to iron the glove to release any kind of wrinkles and it looks really perfect. If we wanted to we could now even add a second stage of ironing with a little iron and that would add a little more shine to the leather but we believe that a classic pair of men's gloves shouldn't be too shiny but have a medium shine so we skip that step.

There are some older adverts from the 30s-60s that show exactly why products outmatch other products, how they were made etc., it’s a dying way of displaying a product because they’ve found that the more random an advert (Take the go-compare adverts for example), the more memorable it was.

I bought a pair of Fort Belvedere Suede Midnight Blue, size 8. The palm fits, yet the fingers sleeves are too wide. Probably because of I am having thinner fingers. Do I need to order a pair of 7.5 Fort Belvedere Lined Gloves instead of size 8. I am looking to get another pair of lined gloves from the Gentleman's Gazette.

It depends a bit on your style. If you are more into business and formal suits, I'd go for grey. If you can wear more color, maybe burgundy. Both are super versatile but not your average run of the mill glove.
@PureInsanity
@PureInsanity 6 лет назад
Gentleman's Gazette I wear very casual outfits. So I think burgundy will work. I also noticed you have a somewhat wide variety of leather types, which one do you think is the best?
@donotseemecricket
@donotseemecricket 6 лет назад
I own the peccary leather gloves in Grey. I chose grey as it goes well with most of my coldweather outfits. I love the look and feel of the peccary. It's also a unique leather that while common for gloves, is not commen you see gloves in this leather these days, and just this weekend I wore them out to a bar, and got compliments on them from several men who asked if they could touch them and try them on. I live in a cold climate so I got the lined ones. I would personally reccomend the peccary, but it's really a style choice. The lambskin ones are sleeker and have a different texture and look. The peccary gloves will darken over time and you will probably see more signs of wear much like calfskin shoes which I really enjoy. The lambskin gloves, tho I do not own a pair myself, I think would show their signs of wear differently.

I own 2 pair and these are great gloves....I wanted to get some of your driving gloves....like them better than the Dents I bought but Dents have Touchscreen capability......not that hard to add....any chance you can add that to your driving gloves?
@gentlemansgazette
@gentlemansgazette 6 лет назад
We will be adding some touch screen sensitive leather in the future, however, it impacts the softness of the leather. If you want touch screen it will not be as soft and supple as without. So it depends on what you want. On our current gloves, we added some touch screen sensitive material on the inside thumb and index finger, so you get soft leather plus some touch screen functionality. It is not as perfect as with your bare hand, but it works quite well in my experience. It It is always a trade off I suppose. I'd suggest you order a pair, and see how you like them.

@gentlemansgazette 6 лет назад
Hello Mika, If we would add a store in the EU, you would of course have to pay taxes and duties. On top of that, you would have to pay for increased logistics, rent, and staff, so at the end of the day you would pay more than if you just ordered it from the U.S. We offer free shipping worldwide with order of $250 or more.
@mikav8206
@mikav8206 6 лет назад
Sorry, I was using a wrong term, of course the taxes must be paid. But for example here in Finland the toll duty for gloves bought from the US is 7%. There is no that kind of duty when buying from inside the EU. And the bigger problem than the slightly increased price is that paying the duty is a huge pain even if it can be done online. Last time I bought shoelaces from the US, it took about 30 minutes to pay a duty of few euros. But I understand that another store in EU would also mean additional costs for you.
@gentlemansgazette
@gentlemansgazette 6 лет назад
Mika, If I import the goods to the EU, we still have to pay the 7% duties, which are then passed on to you via higher prices... Thanks for the feedback about customs. We try to make it as easy as possible for our customers, but I agree it is an additional thing the customer has to do. Trust me, we have weight the options and thought about it, but at this point adding that level of complexity would just be too expensive. However, we keep it in mind and when the time is right, we will go that route. We really want our customers to be happy not just with the products but also with the service.

I recently joined a student association at my university here in the Netherlands, and apparently it is frowned upon to wear a dimple in your tie. I was completely baffled when I was told this, why would they want to look worse? Everybody wears loosely tied full windsor knots without dimples and they all think they're the shit. Maybe this is some Dutch thing but I really don't understand it. This might actually explain why I've never seen anyone with a dimple in their tie on the street, like ever. If everybody is taught not to do this during their years at uni they'll keep doing it when they find a job. Does anyone have any idea why this is? I still insist on wearing my four in hand and nicky knots with half dimples but everyone keeps telling me I don't know what I'm doing with my ugly knots, when I'm the one who's spent countless hours developing my style and educating myself on sartorial rules.

Guys rememeber, just because it's made in china DOES NOT necessarily mean it's poor quality. You get what you pay for. Some of the best gloves in the world are made in china, at the same time some of the most garbage gloves are made in Europe. Don't look at made in china and dismiss it. Chances are you're only looking at the lowest end of the Chinese made ones.

It is true, good quality can be made anywhere. I have seen the high end of gloves made in China, and they cannot compare with the high end gloves made in Hungary.
@XS69
@XS69 6 лет назад
In general, you are right. This misconception is due to the fact that most companies that go to produce in China go for the cheapest option possible. Naturally, if you pay just as much as you do for high end in Europe, you can get top quality there as well. Now, for anything that is more of a western tradition, like western style clothing and accessoires, Europe high end has still the edge above China high end. Such as gloves from Hungary, suits from Savile Row, Italian crafted shoes and so on. This is because of tradition that creates expertise. This tradition is just not there yet in China. Of course, for items that have more tradition in China than in Europe, this situation is reversed.

@SF L Yes, if there is something to get from China it most certainly is tea. I import all of my tea from China and drink it the traditonal Chinese way. Gung fu cha. Once you've had tea like this you'll not want to drink bagged tea again. The average American and European does not know good tea, nor the proper way to brew it. They are too coffee obsessed IMO.

Thing is, no pair of gloves made from those patterns will ever be as good as a custom pair that's made from the more complicated finger wrapped kind. Price...isn't everything, you actually have to know what you want, IE, not the middle seam kind, which is a cheap pattern made for mass production.

The problem with leather is, that they are made with a lot of poison. Also as a vegan (and many more vegans), we do not want leather gloves. It would be nice, if there would be gloves out of something similar as leather - there is a need for that in the high quality market.
