This is 100% facts video. Excellent. I actually chose to sit on the ground in one instance which I rarely due. Just due to cover. Ended up paying off. Deer had no idea I was there.

Great video and info Jeff. My stands range between 12 and 18 feet, with excellent background cover. My opinion is coverage around you is more important then the height. All this in comparison to how far out you expect to see the deer. All my stands have excellent background and branches & vines breaking up my silhouette. I may even use some burlap camo net when needed to breakup my outline. Anyhow, good luck and be safe out there. 🤘😎

Hang on and sticks with a lifeline is my preferred method. Connected with a harness the second I leave the ground. 16-20 feet is my preferred height.

I've got a few trees I climb well over 30 ft with a climber. Deer walk 360° around me without spooking. There's not much elevation change here in Florida. I also have some trees I can only climb 10-15' due to the triple canopy jungle I hunt. lol

I would say as a doctor go as low as you can. There’s a huge difference if you fall from 10 feet than 20.

I agree with your logic, but if you're using your stand and harness properly and especially a saddle, then height is fine. If we didn't do things because there is a small chance bad things could happen then we'd never leave the house.

I fell 12 feet from my tree stand this past October 21 and I broke my left arm and fractured my left pelvis due to my own stupity by not wearing a harness.im sure the doctor is correct about the difference between falling 10 feet or 20 feet.bottom line practice safety first.

@@handlesaredumb1 everything is a risk there’s no doubt in that. I’m not advocating against tree stand hunting I’ve done it most of my life. I just don’t go above 10-15 feet anymore. I always would recommend a harness system but they can also cause injury or fail.
@handlesaredumb1

@drdes9609 kinda my point. Wasn't trying to be a jerk if you took it that way. I've was afraid of heights until I started doing hvac and had to climb alot. I've always felt I'd rather fall from higher up as not to suffer.

In trees which offer good cover, allowing for ladder stand placement I use only 2 ladder segments in height.

As relation to stand hight...Is relation to conealment and wind...for example if there is a split in the tree...Ill try to set up at the split for concealment...Ill pick pine trees and wont have to get as high up...if there is a lot of pines around you get to high up and you loose amount of ground you can cover...you get to high up and you lose bow range and have to deal with more of an angle... Gun is obviously different...lot of variables to consider in selection...Hope all had a good thanksgiving!👍

I build my own ladder stands so 16ft is max due to lumber sizes. And I've been a carpenter for over 25 years so I feel very safe in something I've built compared to a noisy metal ladder stand. Plus around here in most areas if you went 20-25ft up your in the tree tops and limits your views, almost better at that 15-20ft area. I always wear a harness with my climber, I have a summit and I'm not a heavy guy (160lbs) and have had it slide in me on a wet tree while climbing up, talk about heart in your throat, so yah I always wear a harness with the climber . Recently got a saddle and climbing sticks but not completely comfortable with it yet, not safety wise but just getting in and set up quietly and quickly .

Thank you for all the great information! Made a lot of sense. I have property on eastern shore of Maryland (flat hunting). I have one stand that I hate sitting in because it has zero cover. Lonely pine tree coming off the swamp behind me but is set up perfectly for the typical wind I have. When the deer get into shooting distance I am out in the open and I always grab their attention, but when they see me i already know they are coming and it’s just a how long can you stay at full draw stand. always produces a good buck because of the wind!

Depends on the spot but 20 to 22’ gets you above sight. My lowest spots are 16’ and only if situation forces it.
@trxe420

The answer for me, as a one-stick saddle hunter, is I go to where the cover is and usually I am worried about back cover because I mostly have a tree to hide behind. Sometimes that is 15 feet, sometimes 25. I rarely go above that personally as the angles get funky with a bow. For the few times I hunt out of fixed stands I prefer hang on stands and I usually use a 20 foot ladder and then place one step above that to get in and out of the stand safely.

Commenting before I watch the video, but I have killed big game from 5-30ft…. I hunt archery/earlyanterless/shotgun season in MN in the SE hillsides. Assuming everyone finds a spot that is known to have deer the only factors left are shot angles and avoiding obstacles that prevents you from shooting.

Jeff, you often talk about “depth of cover,” (food - doe bedding - buck bedding), but does buck bedding have to be behind doe bedding, or can the terrain create buck bedding at depth to one side of food while doe bedding is closer, but on another side? (For example, doe bedding 200yds to east, while buck bedding is 400yds to west…)

You have to be very careful in your stand before shooting light, depending on what's downwind of you, or if you need thermals to rise right at daybreak. Every stand or blind is different...

Attention } -> 🦌 Mathews bow PR guy/gal and First light PR peeps.. please offer a subscriber assisted sweepstakes hunt with Dylan or Sturgis with your products. Highlight will be the hunt with one of the rockstars and the other highlight would the rockstars instruments/tools that you provide that make them the rockstars that they are!! Make a perfect extended or multi-episode on channel with sooo much exposure of the products and expertise around them that utilize them. Maybe an old school hand written letter entry and then top 5 stories entries have a bow or gun target shoot off for grand prize winner. Youth, green horn hunters, and I guess season hunters may all apply. Winners all stay Dylan’s house where he hosts winners with housing and 3 course venison meals. Sounds great to me!!! Only caveat is I clearly get an entry for being the brains of the media explosion this will produce on the channel for both Sturgis and Dylan’s amazing channel and for the products. Let me know when to pack my bags. I’ll cover airfare.. have access to wheels up plane. Losers get to sleep in Sturgis trophy room with pizza night for dinner.

The world is not made for big guys. The hunters safety system harnesses do not work well for big guys 300lb weight limit. I'm 6'3 326 and had to by a hybrid saddle from XOP to be able to use my climber. Family tradition ladder and tree stands are only rated to 300 lbs. I had to buy the dd14 from the country smokehouse in Almont which is the double ladder stand just to meet the weight rating.
