I tested three popular brands of reptile heat mats to see just how hot they would get; the results were shocking.
Thermostats I Use and Recommend:

I went to petsmart yesterday to get a thermostat for my new snake setup and they literally had none. I asked about it and they said it is OPTIONAL so they don't carry them. I decided to test it out (with no snake of course) and my zoo med reached way over a 100. Glad to see someone talking about this

Kianna Sullivan I’m receiving my first ball python on Tuesday, (got him from BHB reptiles if you’re familiar) and I got the same answer from PetSmart! I always had a thermostat controller saved in my amazon cart, just hoping it works well, it wasn’t the best rated but I’m hoping it’ll do the job.. I have friends who have had snakes for years and have never used one! I’d rather spend the extra cash and be safe then to end up burning my poor little Benji!

Loyd's LizardsIII yea if you are a brain dead reptile pet owner. This video was useless and had no info about substrates heat conductivity and the fact that she used hamster bedding in a tank for a demonstration....no shit a heat mat gets that hot...that's why you use a thermostat to control the heat and have atkeast 4 inches of proper substrate for your reptile so the heat can be safely managed...

This is so so so important!! I never realized how hot those frickin heat mats could get until I had one literally crack the underside of an aquarium because of heat shock. Zoo Med, Zilla, and Fluker's really should require their mats to be sold with the thermostats to prevent serious burns or even house fires. It could literally mean life or death for your animal! Thank you so much for making this video!

My 17 y/o son ran away (yes I did file report and a writ) and left his gecko. I was so against him getting one, or any reptile, snake, critter.... because I KNOW HOW FLIGHTY AND IRRESPONSIBLE HE IS ... I am not a monster so I can't just ignore this living creature in my home. I love animals but am fearful of lizards, snakes etc.... I have no idea what I am doing. I am youtubing everything. I lucked out and got a 20 gallon terrarium. (He has been in 10 gallon since he was brought here) it came With Zilla heat pad plus extra heat lighting fixtures and light and all kinds of extra stuff. But mainly geared for slider turtles. I don't know or think that geckos need a terrfauna waterfall.....anyways. It has the Zilla pad and I have been so scared to plug in since I don't know how to measure the heat..... I am so glad for this video. I am going to move him to my studio which stays about 75 degrees And I bought uvb lights and he has a red light for night. If anyone has any knowledge to share please respond.

I use snake carpet that doesn't absorb all the heat which gets the temp to 78ish, using a heat bulb in the morning(that with a thermostat) to raise the temp a bit, and only heat pads at night for a day night cycle. It's a bit more complicated than just getting a thermostat.

Now do it with heat rocks! My teacher has a heat rock, no humidity, feeds only live mealworms and crickets (she just throws them in there and hopes he eats them) with no calcium, except for calcium sand for her leopard gecko. She also has a goldfish with gravel and sharp decor in a 10 gallon tank. And a ball python in a 20 gallon long with no humidity or heat at all. He had stuck sheds (so does the gecko) always stuck all over him. He's fed live, too. OH and a goliath birdeating tarantula (they get 12 inches or larger) in the tiny hermit crab keepers. She's terrified of it but has it anyway. Don't let me forget, she has a sucula tortiouse egg (ignore mah spelling) and has no plans to find a proper setup. EDIT/UPDATE: She let me get the gecko! Now she's spoiled half to death and named Bonsai.

with both heat mat and thermostat without substrate it will be the correct temperature of what you set it as. When I put a heat mat in my BPs setup I ran it unregulated until it got as hot as it was going to get. Then I put the probe over the hottest part of the mat. Hot spots move over time. I set it to 90 and I get temps up to 94 in other spots. I also made a cover for the probe by cutting small PVC pipe in half. Put it over the probe and siliconed it down the siliconed both ends closed so the probe is in it's own little bubble. I did that cuz if the snake sits on the probe it'll cause the probe to read lower than the temp the glass actually is and it'll get hotter than what you set it to

@MaddieSmith
@MaddieSmith 5 лет назад
DIY Animals Projects! I personally wouldn’t just because the light flicking on and off can be a fire hazard. I would definitely get a probe thermostat and test different distances for the bulb until you’re sure that it’s at a safe distance and only gets as hot as what you need it to be just to be safe BEFORE adding the animal. :) You can use other bulbs that aren’t marketed for reptiles for a basking area, but just make sure that you have a UVB source if your animal requires UVB! UVB bulbs don’t really put off much heat, so you don’t have to worry about those getting too hot, but proper distance is still important! Read the box or a chart online for whatever bulb you get to make sure it’s far enough/close enough for your reptile! :)

I’m having issues with my heat mat not putting enough heat up through the glass of my tank idk if the glass is just really thick but with the thermostat set at 95 it was only 80 in the tank so there is some temperature difference, I think a thermostat is 110% necessary to regulate but I think it’s good they can go higher temp wise so depending on the enclosure you have to be able to adjust 🤷🏼‍♀️but everyone should be offering thermostats

Yea same. Not sure what you are using but Zoo-med heat mats suck.

Ah, this freaks me out! I just put a heat mat on, but my husband didn't get a thermostat. I was planning on going today but now reading the comments, pet stores don't carry them?! wtf.

Yea let me know how that goes for you. My thermostat I noticed isn’t working which is why I ordered 2 thermostats off amazon tonight (wish I would’ve gotten 2 to begin with) and now I’ve been on the internet all night trying to figure out what to do so my BP doesn’t over heat. I’m so scared I’m gonna wake up to him burned or worse.

hey, so I’ve had my leopard gecko ever since he was very young. I’ve had it on paper towel since I got him and was wondering if I should switch to eco earth full time? I use it in my diy moist hide I created for it, but he constantly tries to dig the paper towel and eco earth and ends up messing it up..it’s just abt 50 grams. Idk if that helps but yea

Caty Springer I don’t use loose substrate for my leopard gecko because she explores a lot by licking and I’m worried she’d get impacted, also I’ve heard that loose substrate can be hard on leopard gecko’s joints (think of us walking on a sandy beach constantly) some people are big fans of eco earth though! It really depends on the gecko :)

I used to have my ZooMed Mini heat mat (the smallest one lowest wattage) with a rheostat instead of a thermostat...and it was a mistake. It got up to 116 degrees on the lowest setting. I got a thermostat right away!

Lydia Eddins thank you for posting this, I have the same thing and actually didn’t know we would need a thermostat with it because it has the “temperatures it reaches” on the packaging. Definitely investing in one immediately

Is your room temp 70.3°F? I was wondering about using to make yogurt in Pyrex trays. Looks like the reptile maps will get a lot hotter than the sprout growing mats. Thanks for sharing!

Flukers might be suitable for a cheap mat... maybe with like a ceramic tile or sand to even out the temperature distribution maybe to prevent hot spots... then again maybe the glass will do that well enough? Thanks for the iPower controller link too, I might just try one of those before investing in an InkBird as reads those are the best. Was wanting one also to test an arduino or other MCU version to control a chest freezer to be a more a more efficient fridge also. Interesting... man, under $12 is hard to beat. Thanks again!

Looks like the iPower controller will be a no go for the reference controller (or use) other than the culture or sprouting experiments. Temp range isn't wide enough. Still, looks like there are better package prices also with their label pad on eBay.

Also making sure that your thermostat probe is directly on the hot spot or else the thermostat will keep trying to make it hotter and can get dangerously high.

I need help with this my probe has a suction cup that's pretty shitty I stick it to the glass on the warm side and the end of the probe touches the reptile carpet but the thermostat stays in the low 80s when I have it set to 92 for my juvenile leapord gecko BUT my handhelo thermometer (same brand she uses) reads the surface tempreture of the carpet (on warm side above heat mat) at 115 but when u touch it it doesn't feel anywhere near 115, thoughts?
@Artsyanimal
@Artsyanimal 3 года назад
@@javiermata3593 might need to replace the thermostat or the heat mat or both.? Then again it could also be a malfunction with the heat gun? How long has it been since the heat mat was last replaced? Also you can make sure your probe stays in place with aluminum/foil tape sold at hardware stores and on amazon. Also I don't recommend reptile carpet because it tends to rip out claws from leopard gecko hands and holds bacteria.
@Artsyanimal
@Artsyanimal 3 года назад
@@javiermata3593 is the probe directly on top of the hot.spot? Take up the reptile carpet and use your handheld to read the temperate of the heat mat and find the hottest spot on the heat mat (sometimes the temps fluxuate on the mat) then place the probe touching the hottest spot and place the substrate over top of that (in your case the reptile carpet).
