How Humanity Functions as a Single Superorganism with Byron Reese
Synopsis: In this fascinating interview, Byron Reese, an author and futurist known for his bold ideas and deep thinking, shares his insights on the role and influence of superorganisms. He shares how superorganisms can be found throughout nature, and how members rarely know they are participating in something bigger than themselves, but they are. If humanity is a superorganism, then I'm a nociceptor. ~ 21:58 We don't evolve that quickly, but there have been recent brain changes, i.e., the Flynn effect. Protsiv et al. reported that human body temperature has decreased since the Industrial Revolution; IMO this indicates a change in neuroimmune function. A recent preprint presented findings from the Framingham study indicating an increase in head circumference and brain size. Some people on social media suggested this was due to increased C-section usage (release of stabilizing selection for head circumference in newborns) but the trend started before C-section use took off. There's debate about whether the increase in autism rates is 'real' or not. I'm on the 'real' side; it's worth noting that autists have increased head circumference and brain volume. I suspect that along with autism, allergies and atopy, the rate of connective tissue disorders has also increased & along with them, chronic pain.
