Following is a transcript of the video:
Cheetahs are the fastest land animal in the world. But did you know that humans can leave them in the dust? At least, in the long run.
That’s right, when it comes to endurance, we can outrun wolves, cheetahs, and even horses.
Now, in the beginning, humans fall short because we're lousy sprinters.
Case in point, Usain Bolt couldn't outrun a cheetah in the 100-meter dash if he wanted to, and he tried. But marathons and ultramarathons are a whole other ballgame.
Each year, a small town in Wales holds the Man Versus Horse Marathon. It’s a 22-mile race between riders on horseback and runners. And, while horses often win, humans will sometimes prevail.
So what makes humans such endurance running superstars?
The secret weapon is our sweat. We have 2-4 million sweat glands all over our body, which means we can run and cool ourselves at the same time. Having no fur is also a huge plus.
In contrast, dogs rely on panting to cool down, and other animals, like horses and camels, also sweat, but less effectively. As a result, they overheat faster and must slow down sooner.
The mechanics of our running stride also makes us particularly well-suited for endurance running. A human’s running gait has two main phases: Aerial when both feet are off the ground and Stance when at least one foot touches the ground.
While in the air, gravity pulls us down, which generates a lot of kinetic energy. However, the second we hit the ground, we instantly decelerate, losing that kinetic energy in the process.
Here’s where our special adaptations come in. The tendons and muscles in our legs are very springy. They act like a pogo stick, converting kinetic energy from the aerial phase into elastic potential energy, which we can use later.
In fact, our IT band can store 15-20 times more elastic energy than a chimpanzee’s similar body part, the fascia lata. When it comes time to step off, those springy tendons can turn 50% of that elastic pogo-stick energy back into kinetic, making it easier to propel forward. Without that extra energy, we’d have to exert that much more effort just to take a step.
So, why did humans get to be such great endurance runners, anyway?
Some anthropologists believe this became important around 2-3 million years ago, when we started hunting and scavenging. Because we couldn’t chase down a gazelle like a cheetah, early humans learned persistence hunting. Where they would track prey over long distances until the prey either overheated or was driven into a trap.
In fact, persistence hunting remained in use until 2014, such as with the San people of the Kalahari Desert.
But distance running can still help you, even if you're not interested in running down your next meal.
Studies show running can lower body weight, body fat, and cholesterol levels. And the longer you train, the greater the health benefits. Just one year of training has been shown to reduce body weight by about 7 lbs, lower body fat by 2.7% and decrease resting heart rate by 2.7%.
It may seem really hard, and maybe even impossible to run a mile or a marathon. But in fact, you were born to go on that run. We all were.

*You also missed something!* Since all of the other animals run on four legs, that makes them way less effective endurance-wise. Let me explain: when they run on four legs their ribcage contracts with every "step" movement. That forces their lungs to compress and exhale, so basically they have to breathe with the same rythm as their running which tires them out way faster. With humans though, we run on two legs so it doesn't put pressure on our ribcage every time we take a step so we can regulate our breathing to conserve energy and effectively last longer than all the other mammals. I think this makes sense right?
@Ghorda9
@Ghorda9 6 лет назад
except this wont even matter because once the breathing is in sync with the body, no energy/breath is wasted to sustain it.
@fishsmellbad1862

thats why there are only animals that are faster than us over short distances as the breathing part isnt as important over a short duration, but over longer distances we have the advantage through that. BUT comparing humans to animals it is really hard cause of size difference and that they only adapt to what is the best in the enviroment whilst we dont do that as much anymore

Six months later, as I started running in the park every day, I stopped noticing any discomfort associated with running. It became almost the same as walking. Of course, I sweat a lot, my heart rate increases, but other than that, I can completely disconnect from the fact that I'm running and think about anything, like during a calm walk. It was an interesting discovery.

As an ex squaddie I've been on plenty of endurance runs, or tabs. Once you make it passed a given fitness level you can literally run and speed march (tab) all day. With plenty of water and some high energy food you can go on indefinitely. It's amazing how much ground you can cover and the weirdest thing? It becomes pleasurable. Just keep pushing through that pain barrier and eventually it'll disappear.

Human actually have quite a few strength. We have our endurance, that is by itself enough to make us a near apex predatore. We are the best throwers in the animal kingdom. We have surprisingly dense muscles, though sadly our bones and tendons haven't elvoved far enough that we could safely utilize our muscle mass. This is why our brain actually limits the amount of power we can use. Also we are very well balanced. In the sense next to non of our senses is completly dominant. There are animals with better eyesight, with better hearing, with better smell. But there are very few animals that beat us in all three. Same with movement. Even a naked human can move both on land, on the and under water with reasonable results. Sure there are animals better in both elements, but again only few master both as well as we do, count climbing to that... We haven't become one of the dominant species just by being smart. Though it helped.

I don't know if this is true, but I heard from someone once that long distance walking has close to the same benefits as running, but causes far less wear on the body. So the point is that it's better for you to train in proper walking than it is to train in running.

I wish you would have properly animated the running in this video. It's extremely important to note, humans instinctively run toe first, heel second. The heel first thing comes from wearing shoes, which contributes to hip, back, and leg problems. Not to mention it's more stressful on your body do run heel first which would theoretically decrease your run time. Honestly, I think you guys should reupload this video with proper running displayed. This is suppose to be educational correct?

@CaptainBuggyTheClown
@CaptainBuggyTheClown 6 лет назад
Uh that's blatantly false information. 1) Humans are built to go toes first regardless of whether or not you're walking, jogging, or running. 2) If you're physically incapable of putting your toes first when walking then I seriously suggest visiting an orthopedist.
@CaptainBuggyTheClown
@CaptainBuggyTheClown 6 лет назад
I just noticed when replying to the comments, this channel actually uploaded a video about the exact point I'm making here. So there is literally NO excuse for this.
@CaptainBuggyTheClown
@CaptainBuggyTheClown 6 лет назад
Again, that's because the human body naturally wants to walk on the heels when you're wearing shoes, this channel has a video on this exact topic reinforcing my point. You'll be lucky if you don't have any hip, back, or knee problems when you get older if you continue running improperly. I've ran a lot in my lifetime, and I've always felt far more stride even when not running at full speed by going toes first. If you haven't, I highly recommend you try running on your toes all the time, even when you're walking around your house. Keep in your mind to walk toes first, I guarantee you'll see performance increase. There is a lot of physical ramification to years of bad body movement. This is why many construction workers like my father build up bad arthritis in their hands and wrists because they've continued moving them in ways that wears and tears the body. Same with business men who sit in their chairs improperly all day, eventually bad movement or posture in general leads to wear and tear. It's not a debate it's a scientific fact, I suggest looking to the right of your screen and clicking the video this channel uploaded about "How Shoes changed The Way Humans Walked". Some studies have even concluded bad movement/posture over time can cause more than just bone/muscle issues, it can actually start affecting your the heart.
@CaptainBuggyTheClown
@CaptainBuggyTheClown 6 лет назад
The point is, your body isn't designed to walk or run heel first. If you look up the negative effects of bad posture / movement (bad running technique, bad hammering technique, anything that has repetitive use on the body) you'll find all kinds of scary shit and people who've say ran their whole life improperly then get a career ending injury in their knee cap, or their hips go bad, or they get arthritis whatever the case may be. It may feel better to walk heel first if you've been doing it for a long time, but I'd highly recommend trying to become hyperaware of your movement no matter what you're doing, and try to figure out what the best way to move is. I remember in wrestling I broke my collar bone and I think It's because I had worn the muscles in my chest and shoulder area, so when I feel on the mat sideways with somebody ontop of me, my muscles were not able to rubber band the kinetic force, so it went straight to my bone. Sort of like when you punch a punching bag using your bone instead of rubber banding your muscle. Technique and movement is extremely important to health. There are so many people I know and seen online who have knee and hip issues due to running so much in bad form. There is a down side to walking toes first but typically only if you spent most your life without shoes on and tried not to get your feet dirty, if you walk around tippy toed all the time for example, you're probably not going to sustain an ankle injury because of how much muscle you'll build up around the tendons, but the foot it's self is more prone to injury. Specifically the bottom of your foot where you're forcing all your weight to go through which can actually cause a tear, and having your foot torn doesn't feel good worse than breaking a collar bone imo.

@@thanos9742 Did you watch the video? That's the whole point of humans... We can't catch a wild boar in a straight race, but we can keep jogging behind it until it *has* to stop to catch its breath, then we catch it. It's actually possible to outrun a cheetah if you run in the right pattern, because they can't keep a 70mph pace while zigzagging, and even if they could, cheetahs can only run for about 20seconds before they pass out. Edit: I am dumb, you meant sprint training doesn't help in the wild. I see. I still wanna argue though. It definitely helps, maybe not as much as stamina training does, but sprints will definitely still help your stamina. If you do 30yard sets, and only take say 5 second breaks, then only doing a couple sets of sprints a day would definitely help your stamina immensely. Source: I didn't do football summer workouts and was super out of shape at the beginning of the season, after about a month of practice where we did 10 sets of 20 yard sprints with like 7 seconds in between I was able to last the entire game without tiring. I would say that sprint training helps develop stamina more quickly, but also has a limit to the amount of stamina that you can get from it, whereas pure stamina training would probably take longer, but would definitely be more beneficial.

Intresting.... but imho overlooked 2 extremely important factors to our advantage: training (not any human can just wake one day and go run a marathon or ultra or be fast like Bolt, they would have train pretty hard... vs most animals can immediately run fast or long) and our brain (our rationale or will power can drive us to do thing that seem beyond our limits vs an animal that would have to be chased by predator to be perhaps comparable).

aus_Chili I mean current humans still do it. It's just we've self domesticated so much. There's no reason why the majority couldn't. Literally it's been just the past 10 thousand years that humans have stopped hunting this way. Too small for major evolution. Obviously we still rely on tools such as spears. The trick is to scare an animal into running away from it's herd. Chase it down until it's too weak to fight back. And finish it and eat. Nothing too difficult

the reason so many people find it hard to go run is because of bad experiences associated with running, like rushing somewhere on a schedule, or being forced to run until you vomit or feel nauseous (never do this, its stupid as hell. Its your body telling you to stop right now!) bad form caused by shoes, and the heaviness of shoes making running harder. I could barely run a mile at a scheduled track meet, in a circle around a large building complex with my heavy nikes. easily ran a mile and a half across and around a large field for fun, without shoes, and on a hot day. both instances I had been eating badly and not working out. all about perspective and circumstance ;)

@blyzz2031 4 года назад
Well, they're animals. We kinda suck. Everything we do is inefficient, so it would be safe to assume any animal that can sweat, even if far worse at it, would be better at running than us. Think, chances are a decently fit guy who runs say 3 miles every day can't keep up with a pack of wolves during a hunt, even though they cant sweat at all. Now, our ancestors are another story. I think that there is a good chance 90% of our ancestors could beat a pack of wolves easily, and probably a horse if they were healthy. Humans are probably the most pathetic animals on the planet besides sloths. We are actually pretty big compared to most animals, yet we are so weak that we would get our asses kicked to us by half of our pets. There is a reason though, because our brain is so active, it requires MUCH more blood and oxygen than any other animal, so if we had huge muscles naturally like every other animal, we would either be extremely dumb or just wouldn't function at all. Bodybuilders/Strongmen can maintain both of these because they are also training their lungs to give the brain and muscles more oxygen

This video totally neglected to talk about our aerobic capacity, we are one of the few creatures that can do much more than the lightest jog without going anaerobic, that means we are one of the few creatures that can move at a pretty quick rate without going into oxygen debt, our stride enables us to breathe effectively while running, we can actually run most animals down in 5 or 6 miles because they simply aren't taking in enough oxygen to continue moving, so their muscles fail due to build up of lactic acid.
