Italy got Hungary, so it ate Turkey, slipped on Greece, broke China, went shopping in Iceland and got eaten by Wales wait what were we talking about again
As a Hungarian, I can confirm. It's only a theory that us, Magyars and the Huns are related, and to my knowledge, not a very popular one in academic circles.
I was gonna mention this. Also I think during Worldld War I the British would encourage anti-German-Austiran-Hungarian sediment by calling them Huns. That is, The Huns infected there blood, and the weren't real Germans/Europeans (like the British Royal family?), and had no claim to rule in greater Europe.
This. Also we must know the Magyars, despute being originaly nomadic are only the ~3rd tribe to settle in the basin since the time of rome, after the Huns there were the Obers and only then magyars.
You are wrong. None of the origin theories of the Hungarians are proven. They are all theories. And based on biological examinations the biological Finno ugric relations are completelly ruled out however the research points in the Hunnic dieection.
Hi! The Huns didn't name theirselfs Magyar, atleast we don't know about that. The "Magyar" name came from one of our leader tribes, the "Megyer". The people on western Europe started to call us Hun.. something, because the greeks confused us with the Huns. But it could also came from the "Onogur" name (a Turkic people), because we were supposedly part of the Onogur tribal allience.
No, we were not under the rule of Attila, because we weren't even in the Carpathian basin in the 5th century, atleast as we know now. And yes, we took Transylvania away from the Dacian, it was the way migration worked in the medieval age. they weren't really live in Transylvania tho..
What I love about Hungarians and Poles their love for their country and the pride of their own culture and they are not politically correct at all lol. Can not miss with Hungarians or Poles.
@Overweight Russian Grandma You can live in anoother country and still being proud of your country, people tend to move to places to find better places to live, it doesn't have nothing to do with pride.
@@TylerSolvestri no one mentioned Africans here... Race doesn't have to do with legality anyways, Polish and Hungarians don't like other ethnicities from outside Europe period... They don't like (legal) immigrants from different cultures especially Muslim.... Don't come at me with illegality Bullshit If they don't like immigrants they shouldn't be immigrants in other other countries And welp I haven't seen terrorist attack by an Iraqi and yet I see people discriminate against them so shut ur pie hole
@@awaf12 1. Africans and the Arabs can be mentioned in this since they are part of the immigration problem in Europe. 2. You can be proud of your home country and not being living in it, for being proud you don't have to live there. 3. There's nothing wrong about stopping Muslim immigration, Islam is an expansionist religion and expansionism cuas conflicts, in addition that in such a horde of immigration are entering terrorists and criminals, Poland and Hungary are not responsible for the crisis in such countries and have the right to make strict decisions on to immigration because they are sovereign countries, that you do not like and you are a globalist is not of your interest, being a humanist is an option, and protecting your borders is logical and more so if the quality of life in that society is irregular, if Islam in general is so good and peaceful then why Poland and Hungary haven't had terrorist attacks and explosions in order to kill people in the last decade? 4. They are emigrating legally through an internationalist pact, they are not breaking any rule, the fact that many emigrate is a problem of such individuals, not of the administration of such a country that is itself guilty of the bad economy. 5. Immigration has many negatives spectrums, the ones that I want to emphasize are criminally, bad behavior and even terrorism, If we compare the bad things about Muslim/African immigration and Polish and Hungarian immigration we can see that ones have a lot of more problems and negatives sides than others, Polish and Hungarians travel throughout Europe for a cheaper and better University, that's why the most of their immigrants are young people, young people with ambitious plans integrated pretty good in competitive societies, while the others just came to seek a better life living in a ghetto and do some unprofessional job to life of it, we can aggregated the cultural and educational factor, Hungarians and Africans for example, have different education systems, the Hungarian is better eventhough they are poor in European standards, that education and values make them a better kind of immigrant, in Africa and Arab countries the ones who immigrate aren't the most brilliant minds but the most vague people, most of them want to life on welfare and don't do shit to surpass themselves. What did you said about Iran?, huh, that's an stupid excuse, almost no one mention Iranians, they tend to do a reference to all Arab Muslim countries, because there are terrorist in all of their countries, people criticize Iranian government for being evil and totalitarian, by the way; ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mMerTsjJqjc.html
@@awaf12 Oh look at these xenofobic Poles! They opened borders for thousands Vietnamese, Iraqis, Syrians and two milion Ukrainians. Their govt funded settlements for refugees in Lebanon! How dare they? Racist xenophobes! We don't hate on immigrants, It's not about ethnicity, it's about education. Either you are useful, or fuck off.
As a Hungarian myself I can confirm that this made me hungary! Especially after the picture of the Gulyás, and Lángos! Also your pronounciation is not that bad! The "Gy" in Hungarian counts as one letter and is pronounced kinda like the "D" in "Duke (Dj-oo-k)" and "Dune (Dj-oo-n)" in British English.
In Polish it is "Węgry" which comes from same latin root "Ungri" as in English and other Germanic countries (similar in Czech, "Uhry", or Russian "Wiengr"), although unoficially "Madziary", coming from original name, may also be used. EDIT: Note, as others have pointed out, that English name does not come from "Huns", but from Latin name for Magyars (Ungri, Ungeri), which probably was adopted from Turkic languages (Ongur, etc.)
@Name Explain You got this one badly wrong. Atilla the Hun was a leader of the Huns and the Huns did give their name to the land that English speakers still call Hungary (Land of the Huns), but that was around 400 AD. The Magyar were a completely different people that migrated to the same land around 800 AD. They still call themselves Magyar to this day, and they call their land Magyarország (Land of the Magyar). Their earliest known leader of significance was Árpád. They are not the Huns of history. They are not connected to Atilla. In the English speaking world, unfortunately, we kept the old name for that land and we then began to call the Magyar Hungarians (People of the Land of the Huns) even though the Magyar had conquered that land and the Huns had ceased to exist. The various peoples that have occupied the Pannonian Basin include the Celts, Dacians, Romans, Gepids, Lombards, Ostrogoths, Huns, West Slavs, Avars and Magyar.
Huns and Magyars are (most probably) very different ethnic groups, if you even call the former an ethnic group, and not a confederacy of tribes with different origins. Huns were in Europe centuries before Magyars.
@fassenkugel Jesus. You took some pills aren't you? Why the heck we want to become the creators of the universe? Why do we want ancient connections to long forgotten people? Just leave that job for the Romanians. They are the best in creating the world.
How fast Iran How grassy is Greenland How much ice in Iceland How hungry is hungary How turkeys eaten in Turkey How chill is chile How fine is finland How many engineers in England How hollow is Holland How similar the nether in minecraft with Netherland How many poles in Poland How yummy is Cook Island How sleepy is Wake Island How secure is Marshal Island Do salmon live in Solomon Island How does British Virgin Islands stayed without a mate
What about Easter Island? Or the Sandwich Islands? Or the Canary Islands? Which btw is named for dogs. Bc sailors could hear the seals barking as they sailed nearby. And thought that the isles were filled with canines. And don't forget Bikini Atoll. (which got bombed)
Now I'm thinking about all the other words related to not just food, but eating. Words like "Lunch", "Dinner", and "Breakfast". Funnily enough, "Breakfast" is a verb, not a noun. You can totally say "Would you like to breakfast with me tomorrow morning?" and that's 100% grammatically correct. Germanic languages have a different perspective on things like hunger btw. You don't say you "are hungry" in Germany, you say you "have hunger". "I have hunger" or "Ich habe Hunger". I really like German's more-sensible meal names, "Mittagessen" translates directly to "midday meal", "mit=mid", and "tag=day", like "Guten Tag". And haven't you ever had your essentials?
German here. We actually have both forms: Ich bin hungrig = I am hungry Ich habe hunger = I have hunger I am sure it's the same in english where you often (as a german) think they would not understand that or perceive it as unnatural language if i say XY this or that way.
Actually I can tell You a lot of about farming stuff. Well, we farm what we can, and what out terrain is able to. Wich is: pepper/spicy pepper (mostly in Szeged), grapes(in Tokaj), wheat, tomato, peach, apples(another common thing) But we can't farm any fruits like mangos, bananas oranges etc.
:( What happened, you usually try to be very accurate in everything you say, and yet you completely got things wrong here with the "hun" connection... Was this video rushed? Why is this not up to par on your quality?
During the two World Wars, “Hun” was British slang for “German.” I don’t know why, maybe as a way of implying they were as cruel as Atilla. Hungarians are not related to Germans, but the English are, and the Royal Family even more so. George I (Hanover) didn’t even speak English; George III tried to rule like a German king and lost a few million subjects in 1783, then later went insane; George IV left the throne to Victoria, who married Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha (and kept him in the can, but that’s her secret); in 1914 the family name was changed to Windsor to make it less German. But the Huns weren’t German, and neither are the Magyars (Hungarians). Their language isn’t even in the Indo-European family.
Marian Sanguenza The original Huns were nomads. The Magyars were probably nomads before they settled in Hungary, but they weren’t really Huns. And the German Imperial soldiers weren’t really Huns, nor nomads; the British called them Huns as a slang term during WWI. The common ancestors of many most English and German people were nomads during Roman and early post-Roman times.
Langos are amazing. I mean, not healthy or low in calories or anything, but they're AMAZING. They did make it to places like Dresden in Germany where they're a staple of street food/Christmas markets. If you can go and experience proper langos... Do it!!!
I am hungarian and I can indeed confirm that we are hungry. At least I am. I am also fat... Edit: The uprising was in '56 not '52. Nonetheless great video!

In the Baltic States, it is known as Vengrija (Lithuanian), Ungarija (Latvian) and Ungari (Estonian). It's language comes from the same family as Estonian, Finnish and Sami being of Finno Ugric origin but it is completely different to either of those.
If I had a forint everytime someone asked me if I'm hungry after I told them I'm from hungary... ...I would be broke af, because: a) 300Ft is worth roughly about $1 b) I don't talk to anyone. Yey! :D
In the 18th and 19th centuries Austria and Hungary were part of the same country called the Austria-Hungarian Empire. How they became an empire goes a little something like this: Austria got Hungary and ate Turkey. They conquered lands from the Ottomans who were Turks thus ate Turkey because they were Hungary.
I'm hungry for some of that Hungarian food. I buy Hungarian sausages and Romanian chocolate bars and other Eastern European foods and I'm English. That dessert and the goulash looked nice.
Last month, I looked at Hungary on the map. I was amazed at the polythene tunnels everywhere (greenhouses). Now, they grow more stuff, real food not cash crops and they have extended the growing season. Under Orban, Monsanto and friends were kicked out. Amazing!
Honestly I'm just kind of sad seeing how history went on between these nations. I have a couple of Romanian coworkers and all of them are amazing, hard working people. We should really stop hating each other for things that happened so way in the past that we weren't even born back then yet. And still, people don't stop arguing about this. Transylvania is a beautiful place and yes, it would be great to have it as part of Hungary but we don't, the same way we don't own so many other territories we used to. But that's past. 90% of the people who can't accept it are radical thinking nationalists. Thank god I keep hearing it less and less over the past decades. Maybe one day it ceases to be a sensitive subject. Hopefully in my lifetime.

This was very Geography Now. As far as language goes, I find it interesting that the word "goulash" has made its way into English. I wonder what other Hungarian words have crossed over.
Well after three years, Name Explain has finally done it. Congratulations on becoming a meme channel. Next up, "Are the Russians Really Rushing?", "Are There Whales in Whales", "Is Greece Greasy?", and "Are There Turkeys in Turkey?"
I heard that Maygar might translates into "Mountain Falk " It would kind of make sense since the Hungarians are Uralic like the Finns and Estonians that pretty much came from the same area but have are related groups of people but are different in language, certain cultural aspects, and traditions. Hungarian is the English translation for "decadent of the Huns" but it's not 100% accurate. Just like how some people think Slavic means "Slave" but it is from Old Novgorod meaning "People of the Water" or "People of the River"
Hungary might be one of the poorer countries in Europe, but at least they're not importing massive numbers of people from the third world so in the future when Hungary has its food and housing for poor people under control the poor in "culturally enriched" countries like Germany and Sweden will have to go without at the expense of Africans and Middle Easterners.
@Overweight Russian Grandma Why do you think Hungarians need a visa to visit the USA not even a hungarian but are u aware that they are included in the visa waiver program ? loool
@Overweight Russian Grandma We don't hate them, BUT it is better to be careful. Every country has its own mistake, what if it's ours? Can be. But if we are let it go, bigger troubles could happen. I'm not proud of that either. I know, this is sucks. If we enclude them, we are bad, if we let them in then there would be more crime. We are afraid that we may have terrorist attacks if we let them in..
My father’s family is Hungarian. His parents used to buy paprika in 5kg packs. Allegedly we are direct descendants of Atilla the Hun. No proof or anything, just a family legend.
Hungarian here. Hungarians and Magyars are completely different tribes/ethnic groups. Huns fought in the Carpathian basin, got bored of it, and went back to Asia. Magyars met the Huns, there was a high five and a switcheroo. Everyone in Europe thought that the Huns came back, but apparently it was the Magyars. Nice story, but still we are mistaken 😅
As a bunch of people have pointed out, Magyars are not Huns. But that confusion/evolution (and similar ones with the other exonym/endonyms) would be a great topic! For example, in French, Germany is Allemagne like the Alemanni tribe who lived in the region before the Franks so it's not that weird to call Hungary after the Huns even when the Magyar people settled there 500 years later (also, both groups were great with horses & arrows, so you can see how someone in the 10th century or the 21st may imagine they are related)
This felt like a really lazy attempt. You got almost everything incorrectly. But still, thank you for even taking the time to make a video about us. It means a lot. Even if it is not right.
ÉhesOrszág , we are very hungry all the time not joking we have a lot of regional foods or how you call them , dishes specific to Hungarians, very hungry Hungarians , now you reminded me that i am hungry again
Do a name explain of Arabian countries. BTW on your ancient Egyptian video you pronounced Egypt in Arabic as Misr when its much more closely pronounced as Masr (with a strong R).
I'm Hungarian. I can agree this video is rushed and not saying important things everytime. Only thing i agree that you say that there are hunger in the poor areas in Hungary. They are the gypsies who came from India and saying they are Hungarian.
2:09 "However, the small farms were soon collectivized" yaaay! "Despite the forced collectivization, the large farms developed well and the living standard of the peasantry grew significantly." You don't say?! Mh, seems I still have to love Socialism
Very true. It might even be said that the large farms developed well and the living standard of the peasantry grew significantly because of collectivization, not despite it. There is ofcourse the moral side of forcing collectivization. Seeing as you are a libertarian, what are your thoughts about that?
@@PGraveDigger1 my name is just a meme lol. I have a boner either for the chinese model of farm collectivization (see chinese communes), or for the east german model (basically just building cooperatives)

@Name Explain I understand that you have difficulty with pronunciations but, after enjoying a lot of your content with a linguistic ear, I cannot accept that this is not fixable with minimal effort. Consider that you can successfully sound out the word "magyar" (0:56). In another word that begins with the same six letters, like "magyarorsazg," why should some letters become silent (0:22) and why should the letter L get introduced in the middle of the word (0:26)?
Ngl I definitely thought that the thumbnail said "does Hungary have to give up it's name" for a good 6 hours (I was at work when I saw the notification)
There is differneces, but until the late XIX. century, all the academic people thought that the magyars are the descendants of the huns, and therefore every latin-based language started to use the word "hungarian" not the word magyars. Even the hungarians themselves thought that they are the grandchildren of huns. That is why hungarians spread across through the latin languages. Nowadays, outside of the academic world, many hungarian people think that huns are fact the direct relatives of the hungarian people (and we have a lot of evidences about it), but there are tons of evidence that we are not direct descendants.
Yes, Name Explain only mentioned one very simple one-sided and outdated theory. Many Hungarians proclaim themselves to be descendent from the Huns, but little is actually known about the Huns. I can't make a good statement here because I'm not a professional in the field, it is however not hard to find huge amounts of critique against the theory by simply looking it up online.
