I was literally JUST getting down on myself for feeling like I didn’t have enough contrast and just “coloring in” my sketch. I actually thought of those exact words last weekend when I was doing a really colorful sketch and despite its color I just thought it looked flat. I would love for you to go even deeper on these pens and see you use them and talk through when you choose which one.

Thank you for sharing this, I certainly struggle with getting my darks dark enough. While it's wet it looks great, but then once it's dried back the contrast is weakened. This looks like a great way of bringing the contrast back 😊

Yes that’s a good point - watercolour dries lighter generally. They are definitely nice and easy to use to get some controlled contrast for sure…and you can layer them up too 😊

Thank you, Taria! As a newbie I’m wondering how to know where to use the warm shades of gray vs. where to use the cool shades? I look forward to your videos every Sunday. Again, thanks!

Hi Jill - great question!! I tend to think about what colour I’m using the grey shade over… if it’s a warm yellow, orange or red I’ll use warm greys and if it’s over colder greens, blues etc I’ll use cold greys… hope that helps? Thanks so much for watching!!

I love this! I just bought the soft brush nib set because the set you have was out of stock. I hope I like them and I'm able to create these kind of shadows and depth. I also really enjoy your sketching process and am trying to get loser with my sketches and not get so caught up in realism (which I can't say I really succeed at anyway! Haha). I like the purposeful whimsy of loose sketches versus the feeling.... "Hmmm this looks off and like a mistake"

Hi Taria. Love your videos. This video gives me the push I need to use more mixed media. When I start with watercolor I tend to use watercolor for all the details and shading as well. They might be not subtle enough or indeed end up muddying my picture. I don’t have these Faber Castell pens. But I will make a note to myself to use my colored pencils with my watercolors instead.
@tarias_sketchy_adventures
@tarias_sketchy_adventures 2 года назад
You are so welcome! Yes using colour pencils with your watercolours would work great too - I think it's fun to use a mixture of supplies. I don't always use the pens for shading but I really love the effect it gives :)

@@tarias_sketchy_adventures Bah! I made a mistake :3 !! it's called '' SQUIRE's CASTLE'' ; It's a castle somewhere in the US (Ohio) that I found on the internet. BUT! Squirrel's Castle could be a potential castle name, I think its pretty neat. SOOoo... for sketching them lot, I wonder what your approach would be? I mean with respect to brick detail, would you sketch it? or would you deal with that with paint or probably do both here and there maybe? ( in case it were a close up of a part of a castle ; like how you have your sketches of the front of houses and all that) ..... SOOOOO I would love to learn from your videos and once again LOVE your work! :) cheers!!
@tarias_sketchy_adventures
@tarias_sketchy_adventures 2 года назад
@@nathandmello5065 ahhh i googled and saw Squire's Castle and wondered if it was a typo! I have sketched a few castles, and I have approached it differently depending on the scene. I tend to prefer to NOT sketch every brick. You can indicate the bricks with watercolour or sometimes I just draw a few bricks in a few key places and then the eye fills in the rest. I think this would be a cool video idea so leave it with me - I'm not sure how soon I can do it but its on my list. But look out for a video soon regarding a prison tower...it may help a little....I shall emphasise the bit where I draw in some of the bricks which you should help with your question a little - but the castle is on the list!!
@nathandmello5065
@nathandmello5065 2 года назад
@@tarias_sketchy_adventures Thanks for the tip! Can't wait for the castle video! :D there aren't too many videos on them and the pictures seem very direct - paint on outlines- Althought, from your sketch styles and previous paintings I think you'd have a swell toutorial... SOOO many things to draw! castles are my current favourit at this time! soo many colours so many types! :) Cheers!!

I just found out your channel and I am addicted. Thank you so much for all your tips! Just a question: while I dont get the markers from Faber Castell can I use copic markers instead? Are they a reasonable raplacement for this specific goal of shading? Thank you
@tarias_sketchy_adventures
@tarias_sketchy_adventures 2 года назад
Hi Marita - you can use copics - but they are alcohol markers (whereas the Faber Castells are india ink) so they probably will bleed through your page - so you just need to watch out for that - but otherwise they should be ok as an alternative...
