I disagree that's it's "all about WHO you know." It used to be that way but no longer. I'm a second year apprentice. I served tables before being accepted into IBEW LU 48. I did the research, put a plan together, took it step by step and did everything I could to get accepted. I didn't know anyone in the industry. You have to make yourself a viable candidate and develop a competitive portfolio. There are specific things IBEW looks for in an applicant, find out what those things are and do it.

Well done. Your work ethic is being rewarded. I had a similar experience during my apprenticeship at 48. When I was in tenth term, my employer was already paying me jw wage since I was taking service calls and doing paperwork. They gave me foreman wage as soon as I got my license. It was a little nerve wrecking though because they threw sizable job at me to run immediately. It was sink or swim. Fortunately our training center had some good foreman training. Congrats.

I now make almost three times of what I made before as a foreman… Also, I was running jobs before getting licensed as a 4 year apprentice because I was ambitious and motivated to be successful. I love your vids. Im a solar tech thats been on my own for some time as a sub for larger companies. Getting licensed was always important to me. I learned a trick in the Marines that pays off throughout life. If you want paperwork filled out by someone else, youre better off just filling it out yourself and have them sign it. Its way easier to just sign than fill out all the paperwork. As a result im aitting for my NC unlimited license next month having never done any of the lower level licenses. I got all my hours signed off for unlimited/masters so thats what I'm taking. I'm super thankful i was able to take this path because at 41 with 7 years in the business, i didnt want to go be an "apprentice". Great videos, keep up the good work

It gave me a positive look for the future and he was a cool guy that I look up to, aswell as probaly getting paid more than my teachers lol.

Congrats, don’t forget about the IBEW and understanding the chain of command is their so the contractors don’t over work apprentices into Journeyman work. Just cause an apprentice can work by himself it doesn’t mean your journeyman ready. After you turn out a journeyman is still under training for another 5 years. JJ is what the old timers would call it. A foreman is still a Journeyman all it means is your the Leadman and should have material, tools and a plan for the task to get done. Awesome video, love your attitude and hopefully you keep moving around and get some more experience and remember as a foreman to respect your crew, the bylaws your guys can make you or break you, and stay humble and listen to your crew cause I’m sure they all have experience and seen it done many ways.

Becoming a foreman is nice goal to achieve. As a former IBEW JW of 15 years, I’ve seen a lot of people take on the position when they were not ready. Just don’t let yourself get caught up being foreman and continue mastering your craft. I know every local and company is different. I was never a foreman but got paid as one running service, then left to start my own company and that has a been a rush! Good luck on your journey and stay safe!

Do you know if unions or companies in the states honor hours practiced in Puerto Rico? If I were to move as a licensed electrician here do I have to start all over again as a helper/apprentice . I already have 2000 provable hours including 1000 of school.
@andrewk7745
@andrewk7745 Год назад
If I’m reading it right you have 1000 hour of on the job experience. This is only 6 months full time and is not much experience. My apprenticeship program with the IBEW required 8000 hours on the job and 5 years of schooling to become a journeyman. If you were to get into the IBEW they would start you off as a 1st year apprentice. That’s not bad considering the benefits and starting pay that will increase every year. If you go nonunion from what I’ve seen they like to see 3-5 years minimum experience to receive their full wage. Nonunion doesn’t really have a standard to what a journeyman is. If the company calls you a journeyman you’re a journeyman. If you work in a state that requires a license you must obtain one from that state. So, you license from Puerto Rico is worthless.

If you are in the Illinois. it is almost impossible to get in the IBEW union. Try Carpentry.

Keep trying. Do anything to make yourself stand out. I quit my job and went to community college for 2 semesters and received a certificate in electrical/electronic maintenance. Then worked for a contractor in hvac, somewhat related. Then worked as a building engineer at a mall. I got in on the 3rd try. I didn’t know anyone in the IBEW and I’m in Illinois, lol.

@@andrewk7745 Good evening Andrew. just let me mentioned that when I applied it was in the early 90's. It is great that you did not give up. I am in cook county and back then joining a union it was all political , especially in cook county. If you are not in cook county it was a little easier, but I wanted to join 134 nothing else. For the past several years it has changed quite a bit opportunities are broader and requirements are less.

@@MB-ir8xf I got in in ‘97. I’m sure it was also a bit political, but I kept trying building up my resume and persisting with tenacity. Never give up!

I would do calisthenics paired with running so that all of your muscle groups build strength and endurance as opposed to only losing weight/ lifting weights.🙏🏼✅

@@tyd3407 Thanks for the advice! I'm been trying to focus on multiple muscle groups and light cardio. What's calisthenics?
@tyd3407
@tyd3407 Год назад
@@thebeanz7838 "Calisthenics is a form of strength training consisting of a variety of movements that exercise large muscle groups, such as standing, grasping, pushing, etc. These exercises are often performed rhythmically and with minimal equipment, as bodyweight exercises." - As per wikipedia. But in short- I personally run anywhere from 1- 3 miles when i workout, and right after, i go into a routine of pull-ups, hanging chin-ups, push ups, monkey bars, bear crawls (on all fours), jump rope (jump rope has been crucial for my overall body tone and mobility- you might even try a weighted jump rope), and anything else that you would like to do that incorporates your body weight as the main resistance in your workout. I can't stress jump rope and pull ups enough. Your grip strength and abdominal strength will increase tremendously. Blessings!

Brush up your algebra, basic electric theory, and get some experience anywhere that will offer it to you🙏🏼 Also try to decide whether you want to do commercial/ residential/ or industrial electric work. But that can also change over time depending on your interest level/ experience with each.

Not too uncommon. We regularly have apprentices running work in their last year of apprenticeship. Technically, they cannot be a foreman, but they are functioning in that capacity. The moment they get their JW and license, they get the foreman tag.

If you are moving between the backend and the front end logistics of various projects than that means you are taking on Superintendent duties. That means you don't touch the tools anymore. There is only so much a guy can handle. The Foreman's job is to run the crew, keep them supplied, and coordinate with the other trades regarding the build out. That is it. Their job is to be focused on the the build out and making sure their crew are focused on what they do. Anything else leads to stress and stress leads to loss of focus and eventual burn out. It is not the Foreman's job to deal with the front end or the back end logistics of the job, that is the Superintendents job. It is not the Superintendents job to be focused on the details of the build out, that is the Foreman's job. Remember that and don't be taken advantage of. These guys are going to turn you gray, mark my words 😁 I know. I've seen it and felt it. Don't be grateful that your uppers are doing their job, expect them to do it. A lot of these older guys are on power trips. The white hard hat move was a power trip. He should have asked you if you want to take on a foreman position. Remember that your boss is not paying you out of his pocket. You are payed from the contract. Stress will take your health and personal life into a bad place. Good luck brother.
