This is a real problem in Istanbul and even in southeastern Europe. You should look for taxi companies that use taxi meters, it's cheaper and takes care of any confusion. By law, they are actually required to use the taxi meter and even give out receipts.

Damn this happened on the philippines too, a vlogger, half filipina, went back to the philippines, rode the taxi and the taxi driver wont open the meter, the difference was the guy in the philippines got yelled at by the higher up, like he was pissed beyond belief, and the higher up was so fed up that he really just said every report of taxis scamming people can be grounds for them losing their job AND their license...

As a Turk I am sorry for your bad experience. In Istanbul there are very limited numbers of taxi license plates. they worth more than half a million dollars. taxi license plate holders (they are basically cartels/mafia) dont let municipality to give more taxi license plates (because more taxi license plate means their taxi plates worth less.) If you are not going to a far place or you are not a foreigner they dont even take you in busy hours. There was Uber in Istanbul years ago and they lobbied against it and eventually make Uber banned too.

That is really common in Turkey especially im Istanbul. We went there once with my cousin from Ankara and they still demanded a hefty price and didn't wanted to start the Taximeter. Till she really got angry with him and threatend to just get out of the Taxi and use a bus or so. 😂😂 These taxidrivers really have the audacity to blame you, instead of there own damn selfs😂😂

Taxi drivers are one of the main problems of our country. It sounds like a joke, but it is not. They do not accept native passengers even if you are pregnant, wounded, elderly etc..(happened many times) they terrorise other cars; once they attacked a car that took a hitchhiking family that taxis didn't pick up from airport (they only accept tourists(you know why). And no one can do anything about to them, because they are acting like a big mafia and they have big connections in government. Because of these connections our government banned Uber

This is how careers start. She could actually start doing this in reality and it would probably get traction very quickly lol

We had the exact same experiences and multiple times when in Istanbul, the first time we went, we were just vulnerable tourists and didn’t want to be rude but the next time around, we were catching these bastards left and right. When you Uber there, you put your destination address and the available drivers will see it and then decide that ‘yeah I can do this trip’. So they 200% know wheeze you are going but still will text you ‘where are you going’ like ‘hey dumbass, you know where we are headed that’s why you are able to text us’ And then once we are in, the whole thing with traffic and blah blah, not following the fate as given by the Uber app or even their meter sometimes. On our last day, we met a genuine and kind driver. There was a lot of traffic and it took us 10 minutes longer, he still gave us the right rate according to Uber but in the end, we tipped him generously because of his kindness and sincerity after being fed up with scamish drivers one after another. So travelers, beware and smart.
