I've always bred egg scatterers over glass marbles, they are layered 3-4 marbles deep. Easier to remove than gravel with better circulation. Been doing it this way for almost fifty years.
This sounds great - from what read the adults aren't really fry eaters but the juveniles are - it would be interesting to see how you'd tackle that long-term.

I have had a group of 10 (female) cherry barbs for a little over a year and just got 5 males this weekend and in 24hours I saw them spawning together! I don’t expect to see any babies though because they are in a 75gallon community tank with cories, rummynose tetras, green neons and an opaline gourami. But it was a very exciting moment to see the eggs dropping especially so soon after adding the males. I only had the females before because that is all the store had left the day I got them and oddly enough when I went in the weekend to a different store, they only had males so I took it as a sign I should get them lol😅
Can't wait till he makes a natural breeding without any artificial operations and any non natural feeding like to give saltwater shrimps in freshwater aquarium.

Sir can you share your water parameters & temperature for breeding them? How long it took to condition them & did you separate them when conditioning? Can you share process of how often you fed the parents daily during conditioning time? At what time did the spawning behavior/ breeding occur? I understand you said it was by accident but at what age you recommend starting to feed bbs? How many time daily you fed bbs & when did you start doing water changes? Thank you for sharing. about 78F and soft water but I don't think either are important for this species. Actually if I had to guess I would expect they prefer their water cooler and harder. I conditioned them for probably a month and didn't separate males and females. Probably fed them twice a day, not unusual amounts of food either. They will spawn any time of day, as soon as they get the chance really. If you put them together in the morning they will breed in the morning, if you put them together in the evening, they will breed in the evening. Roughly 2 weeks when they started eating brine shrimp but age isn't a consistent enough measure to recommend when to switch to a new food, it would be a size estimate and I usually judge that by looking for their heads and mouths to be large enough in my opinion to eat something larger. I often just try it and find out. I fed the fry twice a day as far apart in the day as I could manage and had to do water changes every other day when they were in the small tank. Now I do twice a week in a 20 gallon.
I’d like to update and say I’ve successfully spawned my cherry barbs after watching your video and have fry everywhere I’m on day three but there not free swimming yet I hope tomorrow I can feed them for the first time

@@Rews-fish-shed without having bred odessa barbs myself, I want to say yes. I bet it would. I doubt that any elements are so different that a similar approach wouldn't work.
Hey not sure if you will see this, however I have my cherry barb’s in a breeder tank with spawn mops and plenty of hiding spots. They are also eating frozen brine shrimp and other frozen / live food. They are constantly doing there mating dance but they are not releasing any eggs not sure if you/ and or anyone can help.
Your videos are so informational, love it. I was sad I couldn't find any videos on danios or diamond tetras because those are what I own, but hopefully it shouldn't be too hard. I just got my first danio eggs so I'm excited to see what is gonna happen.
I have managed to have skirt tetra babies for a week. I placed a young mystery snails in tank and they quickly cleaned the bottom of tank of fungused eggs and leftover foods from when parent tetras were in spawning. I initially lost many eggs as a female escaped from breeding basket into where eggs had dropped through. Or I think that's why I only have about a dozen fry. . .Predation of eggs
For a different species I did. At high speed so it didn't take me that long. In general it can take a lot of time and work to actually catch fish doing the thing you want to record.

They are so cute omg I’ve tried to breed my white cloud and my cherrys moving them into other tanks for weeks then moving them back to main but no success. Thinking of trying it again tho it’s been a year or two and my cherry barbs and white clouds are still in that tank waiting for the project just been working alot 😢
I'm not sure I would recommend an alternative.. I actually came away from this with a pretty positive opinion of spawning over gravel. The problem in my case was the huge number of eggs in such a small space. It got nasty. I think any sane person would be doing this in a larger tank and it wouldn't be such an issue.
Hmm I'm not sure why but my white clouds are breeding but my cherry barbs are not, to be more precise they are breeding but not making fertile eggs. I placed a tray with gravel under dense java fern foliage and still nothing, Its a community tank btw with the breeding white clouds as I don't have space for a second tank.
Finally coming around to breed cherry barbs, thanks to my uncle providing a trio. Did you condition both males and females in the same tank/area, or were they separated prior to their breeding? I assume they were together since you'd leave them be to spawn whenever they feel like it.
Hey what’s up man. Old video, so I hope you can help with direction. So I just got into fish keeping a few weeks ago. I wanted to pick one fish I love a stock my tank. Albino Cherry Barbs RU-vid videos blew my mind and I fell in love with them. My 15 gallon Flex tank cycled on Day 16 and I put in 2 males and 3 females. 5 days later and one of the females went on a mating frenzy today. I was not prepared for this one bit. I immediately went and picked up a floating plastic imagatarian breeding tank. But I might have been too late. And bought some dried cyclops powder food. (Her belly is smaller now) I think im ready for them breeding now. However she bred all day and I don’t know how long they will breed for? My two other females look like juveniles so I’m sure their time will come. The eggs are all over the place and I don’t have another tank to separate fish and eggs. I know they eat them. Any tips? I am super happy and thrilled my fish are breeding in this brand new tank!
Personally I would not worry too much about their breeding or about trying to raise a large number of fry. If you're new to keeping fish I would just sit back and watch the magic happen and be ready to deal with one of the 40 things that will almost certainly go sideways as you experience how a tank and its inhabitants mature over time. If you have plants or other hiding places, you will most likely have a few survivors that grow up along with the adults and you can slowly grow a school of fish. Or you can dive headfirst, get more tanks, and raise up a bunch of fry and learn all about that angle. That's what I did. Just have fun and don't burn yourself out.
@@MakeMoreFish Thanks for the reply. My tank is a mating frenzy everyday. Another very young female released pheromones the entire tank goes crazy. I managed to put them in a breeder tank with a breeding mop. I got some eggs in the box. pick up fry powder food and live brine shrimp machine coming in a few days. It would be great for some fry to survive, but all my fish are constantly hunting the ground for eggs. I feed them well, and they still work the bottom of the tank. My tank remains clean which is good. I'll probably get a few more tanks. I have people who will buy them. cheers

I don't think they're picky at all about water parameters. If I had to guess I would say they probably don't enjoy low pH but I've never tested that myself. I think they're a perfect introduction to egg scatterers. Good luck!
Why do they move there mouths so much? I keep thinking mine are suffocating even though they aren't at the surface. It's super stressful cause they are in a filterless tank. I added a small filter to add water movement, but they acted the same all day, so I removed it. Tanks been up and running for 1 year but the cherry barbs are a new addition 1 week ago.

Okay so that’s why I’m able to keep my population down to a reasonable amount because they eat their babies cool. That works for me. Survival of the fittest. One question tho have you noticed that you only see females or is that because the males won’t eat the females ?
I don't know about optimal. I think they are pretty tolerant of a wide temperature range. Mine were at 77-78 and bred prolifically though I suspect they are probably most comfortable a few degrees cooler.
