At the beginning of this hero’s journey, Drew experiences betrayal and abandonment due to the negligence of his “friends.” He takes to desperate measures and creates a scenario in which he fakes his own torn ligaments and broken bone structure. By doing this, Drew hopes that his friends will come to his aid and mitigate his attention deprived misery. However, this plan falls short of expectation when he’s met with the reactions of his friends, calling him a, “fucking idiot.” The climax peaks when the perpetrators in the car physically harass him. However, Drew is able to find peace and serenity within himself once he figures out he’s his own best friend, freeing his spirit on the beach. Overall, I hope to see this nominated for an Academy Award, Best Picture 2022. Truly touching, a story of overcoming failure and acceptance that all generations can come to love.

The raw and honest disclosure at the opening of this video juxtaposes the melodramatic and outspoken Phillips that is often portrayed through his online persona. As the thesis progresses, we finally see the satirical, performative, and emotive Drew Phillips as he speaks, "Lying is fun as fuck... I love lying," (Phillips 2:11). As he wraps up his leg, the atmosphere is reminiscent of a Gypsy-Rose-Munchausen archetype. Furthermore, the somber yet playful mood is explicitly portrayed through the bright and infantile colors of the casts as well as the pink "baby crutches". Phillips build the tension of his cinematic universe, creating a hostile and begrudgingly toxic environment for all of his caretakers. As the plot progresses, Enya Umanzor enters and foils Phillips' attention-seeking behavior, she robustly intervenes and makes it known that she is the alpha. Umanzor speaks, "You look like a fucking idiot," (Phillips 12:10). Phillips' psychological agenda is fortified as an unnamed security guard applauds Phillips for his bravery and strength, reinforcing his Munchausen syndrome. Drew Phillips continues as he gaslights all of his friends as they drive to the shoreline. The reality of the situation is comprehended as Phillips cannot seem to get the surgical casts off by himself. Resolve is finally reached when he must come to terms with his embarrassing act as he schedules an appointment with a medical professional to remove the casts. Yet the film ends as we see Phillips happily dancing on the beach in his casts, clarifying to the audience that he did in fact receive exactly what he had hoped for, attentiveness and recognition.

I love how symbolic the protagonist getting his cast cut off is like showing how he comes to terms with his loneliness at the end of the film.

I don't know if there even is a disease or mental disorder that would accurately categorize this patient symptoms. Such an interesting specimen. The way individuals are treated by society can cause them to act out in ways that are not expected or socially acceptable. Here we can clearly see the subject, Drew, was shunned by his peers and treated inhumanely by those around him. The lack of attention given to him changed his way of thinking and became the catalyst for such extreme behavior. Although we as an audience may view his actions - such as putting on multiple casts and hiding the reasons why - as unhealthy and “evil” or “narcissistic”, it is important to understand where Drew was coming from. We have no idea how we would act when placed under such circumstances. Thus, we all must realize that Drew’s behavior was his way of coping with being shunned and ignored by his friends. It is common knowledge that without human interaction, an individual can go insane. With this in mind, is it any surprise that Drew felt the need to act in such a manner? At the end of the day, we must all use this as a chance to reflect and think back to times we may have acted in a similar manner to any of the persons in this video. Have we ever ignored any of our friends, be that intentionally or unintentionally? Or have we ever been in Drew’s position, so lonely that we feel only a spectacle can satisfy our craving for attention?

Drew's aching desire for human affection amidst a crowd of friends is a testament to the internalized suffering that he is finally starting to work through. The casts are used as a metaphor for the inner work/personal growth that he does to realize and bring to light these emotions, in a very spectacular way. Despite his many cries for help and pained demeanor, he is haunted and ridiculed by his evil friends as per usual. The man at the hospital is a symbol of courage to Drew. To have someone truly believe in him and stand up to him is what he's been searching for all along. However, his toxic clique does not perceive him that way, and rather the interaction adds fuel to their fire. ("He lied to that nice ass guy." -Enya, 14:53) Meanwhile, despite the abuse and verbal assault that occurs in the car and beach scenes, Drew is gaining enough power and inner strength to recognize that the horrifying acts of his entourage are not a reflection of himself, but rather their own inner demons. We see this in his delayed cries of pain when Enya, Josh and Josiah perform the assault. Drew is finally understanding that he does not need to be hurt by them any longer; he has broken out of the cycle. As Drew is coming to terms with these changes, we are presented with him being unable to remove the casts. As previously mentioned, the casts are a symbol for the personal growth that was needed in order for Drew to confront his demons. By allowing the viewer as much time as possible to grapple with this ideology, it begs the question of, what casts do we need in our lives? What wounds must we break free from? This visceral, honest and raw depiction of pain, relationships, love and loss, is a narrative that many of us are familiar with. The strongest take away from the film is that by being the first to look within, actively seek help from the people who are hurting him and become self aware, we know that drew is the superior of the group. The only thing we can hope is that Enya, Josiah and Josh will eventually follow in his footsteps and take control of their own lives.

the story was an emotional roller coaster. one is opened up to the protagonist, drew, as a catalyst. he’s drawn as slightly manipulative. but once the viewer peels back this initial layer, viewers are able to feel the emotional depth and eventual sympathy for drew. a story of rawness; and ultimately isolation. to feel alone in a group of people, to feel ostracized from your own. raw, effortlessly complex.

Drew thank you for this masterpiece. I was so astonished to see the idea of "broken bones" and the fact that is his "truth". Now if we delve deeper into the storyline viewers are able to see the mistreatment Drew faces from his peers. The casts show the fact that inside of him, something is deeply broken and faced a large trauma. The mistreatment from others is a physical representation of what Drew has felt his whole life. Abused, hurt and neglected. All he wants is love and compassion, but he finds this a challenge to receive as he is misunderstood and unique. The fact that the casts are bright fun colours, shows that drew wants to break out of the dark and start a new life afresh positively. I love you Drew keep up the good work.
