Hi, would it be possible for you to recommend some UK dog food. I’m currently thinking about butternut box but I’m not sure and is quite expensive. Also need treat ideas for uk. I get my new puppy in two weeks and I’ve been watching all your videos. I don’t want to feed him processed foods. We have a shop called “pets at home” I think the majority of people shop there in the uk
We absolutely LOVE Cuddly! They’ve done soooo much for the rescue I foster for, Cuddle Babies Rescue in Malvern, Arkansas! They go above and beyond for our babies!
Try the Jasper silicone finger brush. I use toothbrushes sometimes too but for some of my dogs it is much easier for them and for me to use that finger brush that is soft but has a ton of bristles all over it. It’s great
I started brushing my dog's teeth from the very beginning, when he was a puppy, and have been doing it daily. He's 2 years old now, but last week he started growling at me when I was brushing his teeth, so now I'm afraid of getting into his mouth. He's never liked it, but has put up with it, only allowing me to do it for about 20 or 30 seconds at a time, until now that he's decided no more. I've tried a few times again, but his demeanor tells me he's getting ready to snap, so I quit before even getting any significant accomplishment. I've had dogs before that allowed me to brush their teeth without issue, but I'm worried that if I can't get this guy's teeth brushed, he'll have teeth and health issues, and yet I don't want to lose a finger trying.
I teach human nutrition - the overall idea is to eat whole, natural foods and try to eliminate highly processed foods. Kibble is highly processed foods for dogs. So when my vet tells me that kibble is "balanced" and raw is not makes me question them. Love the homemade toothpaste idea!
Raw is balanced. But let's be honest, some pet owners don't know what a balanced raw meat diet looks like. You'll be surprised at how many people thinks giving dog raw beef and egg is a completely balanced diet for dogs.
@@kaitlinski493 yeah everything seems good but a little pricey for me. I could give my dog bones but unfortunately he eats them too quily and after eating them he just throws up. Sometimes I give him cow skin bones
At this "Time" I don't know Anyone, that Could Afford to Feed their Pets a Raw Natural Diet. We Can't Afford to Buy Our Selves Food to Eat. It's Sickening...how The Prices on Everything is Sky high !
Excellent video. I started brushing my dogs teeth a few months ago when I started her on a homemade diet. I found your diy recipe you did a while ago and you're right she loves it. She got a free toothbrush from her vet. Tfs, Kay & Brooklyn 🐶
I brushed my dogs teeth last night. I used coconut oil, organic unrefined as described and baking soda. After, my pup seemed agitated and she also had the runs.
Baking soda is too abrasive and can ruin enamel, bully chews marrow bones and antlers all can crack teeth. Google it found this out $2000 later when it happened. Over time the weakening of the teeth will lead to the full crack. I read that these chews are the same hardness of their teeth which is too hard. You should be able to see a finger nail imprint on anything they chew like a kong
This is 💯 right. I used to give my late cat those Dental crunchies (greenies) thinking they actually helped clean the teeth in reality they probably worsened it. If you think about it, animals like cats and wolf that live outside don't have dental disease because they eat raw meat and bones. Not over-processed dry food that sticks to their teeth
She never actually show how to brush the dog teeth, all she does is advertising all these products almost to the end of the video, I tried to fast forward, but she is still talking about the products. I clicked on the next video that actually teach how to brush the dog teeth properly 😴
My diy toothpaste is coconut oil based too, but 2 of my dogs have seizures triggered by salt, so i cant use baking soda. I use diatomaceous earth for abrasive instead. And i add a little sesame seed oil to help losen plaque, and a few drops of spear mint oil. They hate getting their teeth brushed, but they LOVE the toothpaste!
Don't use diatomaceous earth that should not be ingested or get into the lungs, too many advertisements are incorrect and create misuse of products to sell them.
Thanks for the amazing info! I’m late to the game! 🙈 Barely going to start trying to brush my one-year-old lab’s teeth! I think he’s gonna love the coconut oil + baking soda paste…he already loves the taste of coconut oil from when I give him a little taste when I’m opening it for me.
I have an elder dog who is the love of my life. I've had him since he was 6 months old...he is now 16! He is a Chihuahua Minpin mix. Throughout the years I've had to have a few tooth extraction. He's never been great at letting me brush his mouth, and now that he's old and mixing lots of teeth, I can't give him the hard chews. He's in need of a tooth extraction again. I can't find an insurance company that will take him on, and the cost of the extraction is something I can't afford right now. Do you have any resources that could help me find him a vet that will work with me on the price? I live in northern California.
Yes loving this video my pup always gets compliments on his teeth so proud lol quick edit: if anyone gets any Antlers for there dogs make sure u watch them cause my dog slipt his under the oven he was so sad lol also my marshals sells so many raw treats it’s amazing they have pig ears, cow ears, beef teachca (sorry for spelling), chicken feet, fish skins and much more it’s amazing glad to see more stores selling them!
One big problem - my little rescue dog is very "protective" of his mouth. So trying to brush doesn't really work. I put doggie toothpaste on a "finger" brush & let him lick it off. Even the vet has to wait for him to be anesthetized for a dental exam before they can check his teeth. It must be working because he is 2.5 yo and had his 1st dental exam last week and just had some plaque & a little tartar on his canines - no extractions! Just a clean & polish - the vet said it was the best dental exam she's had this year.
Great video! I have been brushing my dogs teeth with this same recipe for years! They love the taste and come and sit in my bathroom waiting for their teeth to be brushed every night before bed. Quick question on the chews. Are there specific ones that you referenced in your video that would be safe for puppies? We have an 11 week old puppy. She is a large mixed breed dog weighing at 22lbs now.
Do you have a video showing how to train a puppy to take to tooth brushing? I can't find one and my 6 month old just keeps wanting to bite the toothbrush. He loves the toothpaste, but will bite the brush even without it...lol
Rachel, I see you are recommending using baking soda for toothpaste, I've read that Dr. Judy Morgan doesn't recommend baking soda for dogs. Have you revised your opinion on this?
Okay I get it that bad bacteria affects oral health. So a probiotic added. But the round soup bones my dog chews involves his back teeth and front. He gets bully sticks too. Why is this not sufficient?
Vitamin C can help with teething pain. I usually have lab pups and will just do like 1/4 teaspoon in their food. I buy the powder form. Also called asorbic acid.
80 percent of all dogs, regardless if they brushed or not, will develop dental disease. It is more important to bring your dog to a vet dentist to clean annually.
I am going to try this natural toothpaste recipe! I just wanted to make sure whether it is harmful to use baking soda or not if I am planning to brush my dog's teeth 2x/day everyday?
Bully sticks and raw bones will lead to chipped teeth and serious cracks. I learned the hard way $2000 later. I had no idea these chews are too hard unfortunately there aren't any safe chews except Kong rubber toys. Very disappointing. I use lick Matt's to occupy them.. licking is very calming for dogs and mentally stimulating
My dog cracked her teeth on raw bones. It was a very expensive lesson and very painful for her. It was recommended to give my dog collagen chews because as they chew it, it becomes soft and pliable and doesn't break off into small chunks at all. The ones that I buy are 100% collagen.
So glad I found your channel, I’ve learned so much and so has my husband, we are getting a puppy this weekend! Our puppy is currently eating Purina puppy chow, how do you recommend transitioning to a fresh food diet, is it a slow transition? I am not a fan of processed anything myself and don’t want to cause digestive upset if we up and switch right away. She will be 8 weeks when we bring her home.
What we did is just mixed the raw with the kibble together for a few days and then just gave him raw and he was fine. The worst your pup will get is diarrhea (if the transition is too fast or he's not used to raw) and while it's of course not too fun for them, they won't be seriously hurt or anything. :)
As a dental hygienist, I really want to brush my puppies teeth. I am going to use the coconut oil and baking soda, also contrary to what most people think baking soda is a low abrasive in toothpaste which is a good thing!
Hi. My dog is raw fed. Raw meaty bones used to work for us. However, recently, even if I am still giving him bones regularly, tar started to build up. My mistake was not introducing him to brushing. Can you recommend something for me? Thank you
Great video and wonderful tips! I can’t wait to use them. I do have concerns about the sheep horn. I’ve been told that antler horns are just too hard for dogs, and it can fracture or split their teeth. Is the sheep horn “softer”? I don’t want to hurt her teeth trying to do the right thing. Also, my vet said bones are a usually a no go because they splinter and can hurt their insides. Thoughts? Thanks so much for your help!
Great video! Could you share how you got your dogs used to their mouth being handled and working up to brushing their teeth? I have a 25 week old puppy so would love to work on this! Thank you! ☺️
Put something flavorful they like on a small piece of cloth let them chew on your finger to get used to it then go from there. Baking soda for digs can really mess up their stomach ok to use EV coconut oil
You can put a couple of drops of peppermint oil in the toothpaste mix. It's anti bacterial. You should be brushing cross ways not up and down. Focus on the gum line. Don't press too hard. Soft bristle human tooth brush is fine.
I feed my cats and dog N&D from Farmina. Which is at least 90% protein. Can you please give me your opinion. Isn't baking soda and parsley bad for dogs and cats? I hope you answer me soon. GOD bless you all.🙏😊💖🥰 P.S.; I put apple cider vinegar with the mother in the water for all my fur babies. It's very good for their gut health, their bladder,kidneys,.... And it makes them drink more, specially for the cats.
Hi Rachel! Tried the toothpaste today for my new puppy. She didn’t like the toothpaste flavor, but loved the toothbrush. Do you have any other recommendations for homemade toothpaste? Thanks!
I am picking up my Goldendoodle puppy tomorrow. I have been watching you on RU-vid for a few years now. I plan to brush her teeth every day. Do I wait for her permanent teeth come in or start right away so that she is getting used to brushing?
That’s an excellent question. Did you start the raw dog food ? I have 3 dogs I don’t even know where to start cuz it gets so confusing at times on what’s best for the dogs …
My dog suffers from warts and sabacious cysts and the vet wants to amputate his tail I have tried everything known to me and gone through hours of info nothing is working do you have any advice please from a desperate mummy x
I started out only brushing my puppy's teeth only when I remember to. When Rachel said that their heart and over all health partly depend on oral health I started brushing his teeth EVERY DAY. If you have trouble brushing your puppy's teeth, try making them get some sleep after dinner for about 2 hours so they will be calm. This is what worked for me.
We have dog all my life. We feed them the same food we eat ( not the process food is used today) and they were happy and healthy. People has been brainwashed over the years to believe the only food they can eat is the dry food in a package.
Hi Rachel! Love your videos. I've learned so much. How can I start with video #1 through today's. I'm hopping all over the place. I watch whatever RU-vid sends me in my feeds. Thanks!
I have always been afraid of raw bones because my dog is strong and will break the bone. How do you keep your dogs from swalling small sharp bone pieces?
Don't listen to her, marrow bones antlers and bully sticks will lead to small chips/ cracks in teeth and then fill splits. My dog after a few years I realized had chips and one day the tooth split down the middle to the root. $2000 ...all vets Will tell you they are too hard
What to do with a dog that does not let you go near his mouth? I do take him to his year vet clean up, but I do want to do something weekly, to limit anesthetic cleaning. He is a small dog too! Thank you!
Why are so many vets so strongly opposed to raw diets. I asked my vet for my golden retriever puppy. And she basically said it’s a fad diet like “keto” for dogs. With good branding. But doesn’t have everything dogs need.
It's so not a fad. But think about it, all doctors&vets make money on recommending products - some are paid to do it (either in actual money or free products to give away or some have even gotten free vacations to "promote" products). I say beware of any professional that is totally against people making natural supplies for their family!
Rachel, you just discouraged people from adopting a dog, because not everyone can afford these products that what we should be doing for our pets. I own two small dogs I fed them premium freeze dried raw food, and was spending a lot of money, because it’s not cheap my two dogs got itchy skin mushy poop, so I went back to a kibble 4 pound bag that cost $27.00 dogs love it and their poop is hard and perfectly formed. Perhaps to make it healthier I can add broccoli and some medium rare ground turkey meat which they love.
Great information thanks, I've got 3 rescue sight hounds, I've been giving them fruit and vegetables and also milk kefir second ferment with fruit, they love it, I've also been giving them Lions Mane and Turkey Tail extracts, WOW, I take them myself and I've noticed an amazing change in them, I wouldn't dare give them tap water it's highly toxic here in Ireland.
@@AA-ho5mg I clean their teeth with a toothbrush and coconut oil mixed with baking soda and a little oregano oil mixed in, I also have a dental scraper I would use sometimes and remove any plaque that's hanging about near the gums, their breath doesn't smell.
I use Manuka honey 🍯 twice a day. My dog loves his teeth brush because I started doing it the moment he was given to me. My Dutch Shepherd teeth are pearly whites.
This is a great video but all I can see is dollar signs. I'm disabled and a service dog handler and host of housing aside (rent, utilities, food) aside i already spend more on my dog than I do on myself. Being on a fixed income I'm 34 years old and still wearing some of the same clothes I wore on highschool trying to just sew or hide the holes or once someting gets too ragged Ill take for example two shirts and combine parts or cut a long sleeve shirt off of the elbow or cuff has holes in it and turn it into a tee or cut one shirt into patches to cover holes in other clothes adding extra patches even where there aren't holes to try to make it look line it was made to look that way but when it comes to my dog I don't go cheap. Even others comment on how much I will pay for a bag of dog food. I use dogfood advisor and researched ingredients myself and not all pre made dog food or kibble is bad. Sure it may not help the teeth but more and more are being created with healthy ingredients for dogs. They even sell raw or dehydrated options. I cannot afford raw but like to use dehydrated or kibble with dehydrated mixed in and raw diets made at home can also be very risky as most don't provide all of or enough of certain key ingredients. Some places make vitamin fortified powders or liquids to add to these home prepared raw diets to help. Ensure your dog gets everyting it needs but you also have to he careful with what meat you use for example non organic meets typically have added hormones and sometimes color enhancers or chemicals to stabelize freshness. You also have to be very careful with freshness and sometimes just because a meat looks fresh doesn't mean it is. We don't always see how out meat is stored in a market, what kind of trick it was delivred in to ensure it was set to the proper temperature, how long the store pet the box sit before opening it up and putting it in a cooler, some or these ones that buy locally, how long was the animal diseases before it was gutted and cleaned, the health of the animal before it was killed etc so diseases though they can be minimized with proper handling and processing from all ends of the chain between the person who kills the animal to you putting it in the bowl can memize it, the best way to menimize the risk is by heating meat to an appropriate temperature. Sure when you cook meant it can cook away some of the nutrients but it's not a significant change. As humans the same applies. If we eat fresh produce it maintains the most nutrients but a lot of there we will cook line corn, green beans, carrots, apples etc and it still has a vary good nutritional value. Many make it sound like cooking their dogs food totally destroys it but a lot of raw food supporters would rather increase the risk of disease than cook the food and risk giving up tiny fraction of the nutrients. I personally fear raw meet diets for dogs, especially chicken and pork. Before I was disabled I worked for a vet as a tech and saw too many people bring their dogs in who were very ill stating their dog eats the best of the best because they feed them a raw food diet. When we would see a sick dog and the owner said their dog was on a raw diet the first thing we always did was get a vitamin and mineral panel. Depending on the symptoms. If the dog were say throwing up or had diarrhea we wound get a stool sample and blood work to check for bacteria and surprisingly worms as you'd be surprised how many times insects will lay larva on meat especially meat bought from a butchers counter where they keep a lot of their meet without shrink wrap or anything in glass cases and you can choose which cut you want. It's behind glass but insects can still get in with the door being slid open and shut. It can also happen fairly easily when people take their meet put of the plastic wrap, paper or container and place it on a plate, uncovered in the fridge or on the counter to thaw so we wound see dogs that got various types of worms from eating raw meat. More common than worms or even bacteria was nutritional deficiencies. People would bring their dogs in a lot, usually during their check up and mentions thing like their dog having skin issues or hair galling out or looking dull. First we thought allergies but once the owner woukd say their dog doesn't seem itchy we usually asked what they feed the dog and if it's a home made raw diet was when we went to bloodwork for vitamin and mineral panels. Skin symptoms weren't the only symptoms it depends on what's deficient nit other common things owners would bring to our attention were things like "they sleep a lot more than they used to and don't seek to have much energy as they used to" we would hear this in dogs thst were only like 2, 3, 4 years old where age obviously isn't a factor yet. Bleeding guns was another common one where owners wound brush their teeth and they would bleed it they would find blood on chews they gave their dog or toys but there seemed to be no dental related issue causing the bleeding. Many we would also notice had their younger dogs seemed to be having joint issues. One new client brought their 2 year old dog in with a broken leg in a cast and said the dog already broke that dog once and broke the other leg less than a year ago and said they told their last vet this last time they casted it they started making a bunch if rude comments and making it sound like they were accusing her or abusing her dog, asking if she or someone in the family may be kicking it or intentionally hurting it and the tech rolled her eyes when she said no. She said she asked her vet to do blood work last time the dog broke its leg but it was all normal. She brought it too is and all they did was a CBC and heartworm test. She showed us a print out and it was technically normal but several markers were borderline. As a tech I felt like because she was asking for tests and a reason why this was happening she wasn't abusing her dog or suspecting someone else of doing so. The vet listened to the dogs heart and found he had an abnormal heart rhythm that concerned him ordered several panels to rest this dog's vitamins and minerals and an ultrasound of the heart. He also explained that we see nutrition deficies all the time in dogs whos owners feed them a raw diet shd how their not all their cracked up to be and he would always recommend a healthy kibble or a pre made raw food diet produced by a reputable company who has nutritionists and scientists on board who can formulate a diet with the proper balance of nutrients to ensure a dog gets everyting it needs. He expects the blood test will give them the answers thru need and will be a fairly simple fix so the dog won't keep breaking bones but also said if this tests comes back fine it could still be possible the dog may have someting more severe going on line ostiogenisis imperfecta but he highly doubts thid is the case so not to dwell on that too much. Low and behold we got the tests back and this poor fur babies bones were taking the biggest hit from the diet it was on. He was severely deficient in Vitamin D and his Phosphorous levels were the worst I've ever seen. His calcium was also slightly below normal, vitamin A, B12, vitamin E, Iron, Zinc, and a few others were also low. We suggested she put her dog on a healthy kibble diet and suggested several good ones and had to give the dog several vitamins and minerals via injectable and oral tablets/liquids and had to send the owner home with some others to use at home then had her bring him back in 2 months for the cast and a month to re-do the blood and cardiac ultrasound and it came back great and the vet didn't hear an arrhythmia anymore. The owner said after all the money she'd spent on her dog in the last two years and everyting her dog has been through with her thinking she was feeding her dog this great diet she will never feed a dog a raw diet again. I'm not saying all raw diets are bad. They can be done right and give a dog everything it needs but it's definetly a science and there's really no way of getting a dog everything it needs in a raw diet without at least also giving vitamins or using a balanced vitamin and mineral fortified powder that you can sprinkle into the food. Raw diets also increase the risk of foodborn illness. If your soneone who only feeds raw food every now and then you may not have an issue but you can't always tell just by looking at meat if it's got any kind if bacteria or parasite so if you feed a raw diet every day the risk is higher that eventually one of those cuts of meets will make your dog sick. A lot of people beliece dogs stomachs or immune systems are built to prevent bacteria on meat from making them sick but this isn't true. Dogs bodies have evolved over the years through domestication. Also wild dogs like wolves typically kill their pray and eat it right then and there instead letting someone else kill it, gut it, skin it, process it, shop or to a different place where it is stored in a new location until someone buys it and stored until its used which could be a process that occurred over weeks in temperstired that typically range in some degree. Anyhow I still think this is a good video however other than the raw food portion I also found these tips to be extreamly costly for many dog owners, especially if their their working a lower pay job. Have a lot of family members to support work the pay they earn or are in a fixed income so not practical for many people, especially at this time when inflation is effecting every aspect of our lives
The vet is kinda right maybe it is to rough but greenies isn’t the solution maybe try some small antlers there much smoother so it may be easier for your dog
It's usually in every grocery store because it's used in baking. Hope you can get someone in the store to show you. It's also less than $1 per box. ; )
