Part I - Desktop Finish
I bought this 98" counter top from Ikea "As-is" section. To turn this huge wood into a proper desktop:
1. Cut into two pieces: 72.5" + 25.5"
2. Sand down prefinished hard wax
3. Apply Danish oil to darken the wood
4. Apply 5 coats with wipe-on poly
Coming up next
Use this desktop and Autonomous SmartDesk DIY Kit to build my own standing desk.

I think you made it better for sure but the amount of coats you put was not that necessary. Two max.

Yeah, maybe you are right, but the desk works so far so good.

what kind of danish oil did you use? Do you think the Liberon Superior Danish Oil has the same look?

Thanks for sharing! May I know what is the point of sanding? Isn't sanding the poly layer you applied? I've got the same counter top, do I need to pour Danish oil too? Wouldn't it darken its color? Sorry got my ignorance 😁
@yuhengli1979
@yuhengli1979 2 года назад
Apply danish oil only if you want a darker finish. Sanding between layers could improve the bond, and also provide a finished smooth look in the end

Thank you for posting the video! I'm very new to this and was wondering why you used 80 + 220. I've read some people used 800 +1000. Any suggestions?
@yuhengli1979
@yuhengli1979 Год назад
I am glad you enjoy this video, I used 80 for getting a flat surface, and 220 to further polish the desktop to an acceptable level of finish. It totally depend on how smooth you would like. but IMO, 800 is too fine in term of shaping the surface. and 1000 is too glossy,

Hi, after the first passage of wipe-on poly why do you have to sand before every passage ? I thought that the wipe-on poly create a protection since the first application... Last question do you add mineral spirit to poly?

I want to cut my Karlby too cause it’s too long. How do you apply the edge banding after you cut it cause the karlby will show it’s inner wood after u cut it

I used this edge banding: Edge Supply Walnut 2" X 50' Roll... www.amazon.com/dp/B07YYMKHMC?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

Hello I’m planning on buying the Saljan laminate countertop 98 inch and I’m wondering if there would be anyway I could stain it to look similar to the color of the karlby. I just like the dark walnut look but I can’t afford the karlby. Do you think it would be doable? Any tips, anything to be aware of, any color recommendations?
@yuhengli1979
@yuhengli1979 2 года назад
Hey, as long as Salian has wood veneers, you could try to sand down the laminate and apply danish oil in dark walnut color. Just make sure that the laminate is completely sanded down before stain it

Curious, was the main motivation to just get a different finish, or does the walnut color look darker than the original? Also, did you apply the same treatment to the edge banding as the main top (sand+oil/poly)?
@yuhengli1979
@yuhengli1979 3 года назад
good question, yes the danish oil gave a darker look, and the poly finish is more durable then original wax. Also i took this as a simple DIY task and kill some time during the lock down😬
@yuhengli1979
@yuhengli1979 3 года назад
Same treatment to the banding
@yuhengli1979
@yuhengli1979 3 года назад
I think another motivation is the veneer feels cheap, poly would not help enhance the feel, but could somehow cover that🤣

Great. Thanks for the quick reply. We got the long version Karlby and now I need to trim it down to fit a new space. Going to give all of this a shot.

@yuhengli1979

I cannot say very rough, but the original finish is just wax. I sand it down and applied ploy to make is smoother
