@@ArikLivnat Nice whole tone melodies blended in with the modal stuff. And cool looking panels, too. As i'm thinking of moving my recording setup into a big room at home which has random stone walls ("pierre apperent" as it is called here in France) the room, even with a ceramic tiled floor and basically rectangular shape, sounds pretty good. Not sure, but it seems like the rough surfaces of the wall help break up a bit of the parallel room modes already, but several of these designs on stands behind where i will be monitoring/mixing from, would be perfect. And, the perfect project for my new router! Thanks! Will definitely building several of these!

Those types of diffusors are only a small bandwidth of high frequencies. they do not have the range that a Quadratic Diffusor does. The problems with Quadratic is you need distance between the diffusor and the listening position, and they are costly, especially when you consider that you're going to need at least 70% surface coverage to get a proper diffused sound field, so you're entire rear wall would almost have to be covered with Quadratic Diffusors. But those BAD panels you're making only diffuse higher frequencies. Quadratic Diffusors, the higher the Prime Sequence and the deeper the cabinet can go down into the mid range frequencies down to 200hz for a Prime 23, but there are expensive. There's a company that sells Build plans to make Quadratics and other treatment for low frequencies called Acoustic Fields, so if you're a DIYer, I'd check them out, they have the best low frequency absorption technology using Activated Carbon and their unique Diaphragmatic absorption cabinet design.

Made 4 of them, working great in our studio, musicians adore the result. It absorbs more low frequency, below 300Hz - but less high frequency - above 600Hz. We tried some of the other you mentioned, we didn’t like. Sorry good luck👍

@@ArikLivnat First off, you don't sound like you have a strategy for treating the room. You first have to figure out what the problem are and then pick the right treatment, and place it within the room to fix those problems. Just buying treatment and sticking it in the room is a time/money waster because you don't have any strategy. Quadratics work great, but you need to have the rest of the rooms' problems fixed first AND you need to have make sure you have the right Prime Sequence for your room. Not all rooms have enough distance and if you don't treat the other problems in the room, then Quadratic won't work. For room treatment, the biggest problems are low frequency Axial mode problems. Those are the biggest problem with most small rooms and they require a lot of space, and are costly as they tend to be at least 12 in deep cabinets that can also get as much as 16inch deep and you need to have a fair amount of them starting with the front of the room where the source (speakers) are located working your way to the back of the room. BAD panels are NOT going to fix low frequency problems that are in that 30hz to 50hz range. They are simply not the right type of treatment for that. BAD panels are also not wide range diffusors like a Quadratic. Yes, they might absorb down to maybe 100hz, but depending on the material and thickness, they can only do so much in terms of amount of absorption. As far as diffusion, they aren't going to diffuse a wide frequency range, they only diffuse a small range in the upper frequencies and that's all they really do in terms of diffusion. But the first thing first, what are you using the room for and what are the dimensions so you can figure out the low frequency problems first. I seems as though you are only treating reflections and no pressure based problems in the room. Also, to really treat a problem, you need at least 50% to 70% surface coverage.

Arik, thank you. AMAZING! I have a couple questions. First what ratio of these combination panels to two basic absorption panels would you use? Second I'm concerned about the safety of mineral wool and am considering densely packed bulk cotton instead. (Hopefully it will offer appropriate absorption.). Are you concerned at all with the safety of mineral wool?

It looks very good but it is more like an absorber, not a diffuser? Diffusers scatter the sound using a lot of different angles and shapes, but this only has one flat surface with an absorber behind it... If you really need a diffuser, this is not what you should build. Very good design and woodworking though!
@ArikLivnat
@ArikLivnat 4 года назад
Thanks for the feedback Harald! The truth is that it is not completely absorbing... It absorbs and resonates. I also built panels that are more absorbent and I will put a separate video about it. I recorded the saxophone at the end to hear the echo from the diffuser wood- It absorbs and diffuses gently at the same time. Anyway thanks for the diagnosis :)🎷🎷

What does it actually do to the sound ? Most comments say it doesn’t diffuse the sound, so I’m interested to your ear what it does ? @ArikLivnat 3 года назад
Hi Michael:) bottom line it sounds great! I was looking for an element that would absorb sound but not fully. You're right I'm a musician and after many hours of recording in studios, I found this panel best suited for my space, so I started to design my own. It's true what they wrote in the comments, it's not a full diffuser .. but it both absorbs and remains a gentle diffusion because of the slots in the plywood. I think sound is first and foremost a matter of taste. To me this panel does a great job and I built 4 of these. You can download my dimensions drawing in the link in the info.
