How I built my SOLAR Powered Workshop - Power Anywhere

Adding electricity to a shed or workshop anywhere has never been this easy! How I wired my shed for lights, tools & power completely off grid using simple solar components without trenching or monthly electric bills!
This is how I installed my basic system, electricity is dangerous & you always must ensure you have overload protection, suitable wire sizes & safety. My system works well for me but you must design and build a system that is safe and meets your local electric codes.

@SilverCymbal 3 года назад
If you are in an area of extreme cold you would want to take these types of units in a warmer space, Even Tesla Powerwalls require internal heaters to protect them from damage. If you are in a cabin you probably have some type of heating and can use them all year but if not bring them in which for me wont be a problem since I really won't be out there in the extreme temps.

That is a pretty awesome setup! very simple and minimalistic but does the jobs its needs to perfectly. My only reccomendation is to wire a ground rod into the input box because otherwise everything is just floating with the solar generator. A voltage potential is capable of building up in the wiring and if it isnt shunted to ground then you could touch an electrically grounded piece of metal and get a shock from it.
@DucomaVet
@DucomaVet 2 года назад
How does one do this?
@SuperBrainAK
@SuperBrainAK 2 года назад
@@DucomaVet To install a ground rod to the "input box". You add an Equipment Grounding Conductor in parallel to where the input lead is that you plug into the inverter. Then you run that wire to an 8 foot Ground Rod and bond it. This will ensure that whatever device you plug in will not cause any voltage to leak onto the ground wire. It will not protect against a short because most portable inverters do not have a ground to neutral bond however it will ensure that there will be no static build up or potential difference between the ground you are standing on and the metal surfaces bonded to the Equipment Grounding Conductor.

Only installing one light fixture. No. Always install at least two in the shed and attic. When you have one light source, you're always working with something that's in your own shadow. If you install a second light source it gets rid of nearly all dark spots in the shed. This was the first thing I did when I electrified my shed. Always, always, two light sources. Even if the second light isn't so bright, it makes a big difference.

@@scottslotterbeck3796 Yeah.. I ran a dedicated 10/2 line to my 120v SawStop table saw to get it to run right. My setup is not conventional.. My shop is off grid solar powered.. I have a 2700watt solar array feeding into three 48V, 100Ah lithium iron phosphate batteries which feed into a Growatt 8000T (8000watts/24K surge) inverter.. For such a tablesaw, I would not recommend any inverter with capability less than the 8000T. SawStop has a 240v conversion kit and I plan to convert my saw to 240 but for right now, it runs fine.. I did have a Magnum Power 4448 inverter- the saw ran for crap..

FYI, there are also kits which include 12v lights which run more efficiently if all you need is lighting, or can be connected to an inverter for tools and appliances. This concept has exploded with options over a few years ago, and prices are pretty reasonable. It’s probably cheaper to install your own solar than to pay an electrician to run a circuit to a shed.

When using a METAL electric box, you are REQUIRED to ground the box by adding a ground wire from the wire nut to the box and secure with a green ground screw. You can get away from that by using plastic boxes. I don't know of any specific requirements for temporary solar panels, but for permanent ones, there are strict requirements for grounding the panels.

No Biggy, but just an FYI, metal boxes are meant to be grounded. There is a raised ground screw on the back of the box run a ground wire from that to the rest of your grounds. Reason being if the Black hot leg ever wears through the insulation and hits the romex connector it will trip the circuit instead of making the metal box hot. Which might shock you if touched. Better safe then sorry. Like I said, just an FYI. Thanks for the info, great video. I am looking into getting a system.

I have a question and hopefully you see this to reply. So I am going to put solar on my shed for the same purpose as you have done in your shed, but I had planned this a year ago to run a panel, sine wave to a 12 volt battery (ies) and then to a convertor, and the purpose is just to keep a trickle charger on my garden machines. The Question is, with these solar generators, can you actively leave them on, and connected to solar for charging, while leaving items on, like the outside light lets say ? I just found your channel today and I am amazed by your knowledge and craftsmanship . I cant wait to take a peek at all your videos, very motivating.

Looking at something like this for a Shed in Minnesota (Similar climate to you I think maybe a bit colder at times sometimes as low as -20 or -30F but usually only for a day or two). My shed requires a constant supply of about 20-30 watts of power. How have products like the ecoflow been at surviving cold climate conditions over time? I can't really have this shut off, but if it takes more energy to keep itself warm I just need to factor that in. The shed can either have solar supply or intermittent 120v (nightly) power so it will get a charge for at least 7 hours every night no matter the climate. Thanks in advance for your (or anyone else's) thoughts & experience.

Hi there. I am a first-time visitor to your channel here, finding this video following a search for "solar equip a garage.". There is lots of good stuff in this video, In particular, you showed a product that I have never seen before and can't seem to find in my searches on the internet. If it isn't too much trouble or inconvenience to ask, what is the hinged screw-down portable solar panel connector shown at minute 5:02 in this video called? Or better yet, if you have an affiliate link you would be willing to share, that would be awesome as I am more than happy to have you earn a little from your recommendation. Thanks for all the helpful ideas.

Great video I actually just did this with my own shed . I put in a junction box and ran a light two outlets . Input an extension cord into the junction box and can plug it into my outdoor outlet when I need too .. I even put in that same light set up no joke ..

Fantastic video! Also if that shelf starts to sag from weight of batteries you can face it with 1x3 and it will strengthen significantly if you nail face off pretty good into plywood. Thanks for sharing!

Did you add a Ground to your well pump ?? These generators do not have a working ground. Personally i would have gone with DC powered LED lights. Would be more efficient to not go through an inverter.

Ok But better is that long green extension cord plugged into the neighbor's home. 😉 They never walk around the back of house filled with weeds.👍

This is a great solution too if your shed is up but you need to wait for the electrical portion. Perhaps you don't have the money right now to have it professionally wired, but need lighting and power. Reusing the romex when it does get wired should be fine since you've wired it for 110-120V. Good idea!

I was thinking of a similar setup to this, how long with it power that window AC? Does it kill the solar generator really quickly?

For a video on adding solar is was quite disappointing to see a bought-in product that does everything for you. I don't think the panels could output enough power to do more than a small amount of work in or around the shed, although I'm sure they are good at keeping the lights on.

This is really cool I'm looking at building a little off grid shed next summer to start learning. I'm curious though as to why you're using so much AC power on solar. I know inverters claim a 90+ percent efficiency but isn't that if you're drawing the maximum amount of power? Wouldn't drawing 60w for a bulb be closer to 80% if not less? I might be wrong I'm legitimately curious. I've been looking at DC appliances but it seems like a lot of work if inverters can actually keep their 90%+ efficiency. 80% or less though I'm probably going to run as much DC as possible.
@chrisanderson8553
@chrisanderson8553 3 года назад
that 90% efficiency rating already includes the inverter loss.
@krissmek289
@krissmek289 3 года назад
@@chrisanderson8553 I'm aware. But say you have a 100w battery and a 100w inverter and it uses 10w. A 1hr discharge would use 10w but if it was only pulling 50w that's 2 hours run time do 20w. I'd assume it uses less if it's not at its peak but still the longer it runs the longer it eats power.

I have power to the garage , but it's the heating I'm trying to figure out. I wonder if I can do that. Mind you winter's here hits -25celcious.
