Today I go in-depth about how I changed careers to become a Data Analyst. I definitely didn't start out my career thinking I would ever be a Data Analyst. In fact, I didn't really know what that was, but here I am a few years later with a completely different career and future. I hope this videos gives you some ideas on things you can do to change careers as well!

Yup, I have a degree in physics and a minor in applied math (graduated in July 2020) and I'm a courier delivery driver for UPS and I'm still trying to change my career either into data analytics or becoming a high school physics teacher. I'm finding it harder to get into analyst roles though, maybe that's just my perception though.

I was an army regular on their scholarship and serve for 14 years and always wanted to go commercial. The day I step out I literally send almost 1,000 Jon applications with like 2 interviews, and I have an MBA. And I didn’t get any of those jobs, man it was hard. Then I get out to reach out to anybody I know or even just met once, and got referred to a defence tech job as project manager, then ,9 months later, I met an ex army regular whom I only seen his face once and never spoken and went up to him and just chat. Two days later he called me up and I end up as a project manager for a software company. One things leads t9 another and I ended up working for a software MNC for many years. Point is, it’s going to get really hard, and at times you really want to give up. When that happen, read this message again and believe me, keep trying , keep reaching out, keep learning, and things will surely open up. Wish you well

Hey Alex, today I'm grateful that RU-vid showed me someone who has almost the same story as mine! I studied Theology 10 years ago and this degree did nothing to me. Back in 2017, I started an internship at a nonprofit organization. This internship helped me with getting hired by a larger organization working with the projects' team. After a few months, the organization was working on reorganizing the structure. And they assigned me a position of data collection. My work is basically on excel and the organization now works on establishing a new database. Just like your story, I think I need to start learning SQL to get prepared and provide more value to my position in the long term. Many thanks for sharing your inspirational story. I'm a new subscriber!

Hi Alex! Your story is so inspiring to me, as our journey has a lot of similarities. I graduated with an associates degree as a physical therapist assistant, but by the time I graduated I was so burnt out and unenthused with patient care that I knew I couldn't work in the field. Shortly after graduating, and somewhat randomly, I landed a job as a data collection specialist for a local hospital. Right now, I'm looking for a data analyst role and it would be SO COOL if it was with a healthcare analytics company! I truly hope I am following in your footsteps, haha. I have actually just completed my first semester of a computer science bachelor's degree because I really love the subject. While I don't know if I want to be a data analyst forever, I know I want to be one right now - but the journey is incredibly daunting. I appreciate you sharing your story, as I am at my complete wits end trying to find a job. I don't feel like I know enough to get my first job, and the job market seems increasingly competitive. This gave me some inspiration and hope that someone who doesn't really know a lot about being a data analyst in the grand scheme of things (aka, Me) CAN land an entry level role and go on to be successful. Thank you so much for sharing, and I can't wait to watch more of your videos. - Brandi

I am 50 and having worked in IT for over twenty years (system administration, networking and latterly systems management), I'm ready to slide into the cloud and look at analytics too. I'm focused on Google Cloud right now, so I have an eye on the Google Cloud Associate and this Professional Certificate in Analytics, hoping to apply some of that to wherever my career goes in the latter part of my two-legged life! Good luck everyone!!

Jalapeños! This video is really inspiring. By just listening one can tell that you are being super honest and open about it! Many of the thoughts you share are the same ones I've had/I'm having, since I'm personally kind of in the mid-point of your data analyst story :) I feel like lots of people had had the same challenges: trying to earn the first or second job knowing almost nothing of the field, or knowing just super-specific stuff but not really how to apply it or how it fits in a data analytics team. But for people out there: don't let this give you impostor syndrome! The truth is most of the data analysts I know now really did not have any formal education on the field before starting their first position (many had maybe just a degree in engineering or business administration, but no coding or data analytics knowledge). These positions are so demanded that I feel like most of them are covered by people that have been self-taught and come from other areas of expertise. About your specific story Alex, it sounds like you spent so much extra time at every job. It is motivating and inspiring, but for other people I just wanted to say that it is perfectly fine to do your normal amount of work and normal hours, and progression will come anyways if you are professional and work relatively well (and some luck is always great to have). In any normal company, part of your work time should be spent actually learning things from your daily work, so that you can be more productive for your team. I guess I would just like to tell people to take care when putting that extra effort, watch out for burnout, which is very tipical in the field. On my experience, it's better to take things slow but steady!

I'm working on my doctorate degree while also working in a pharmacy call center, teaching IT part-time, and trying to find a career to fall back on in case there are major cuts in academia in the next 2 years. I'm leaning in to data analysis, and have some experience with SQL, Health Informatics, and data presentation so this may be my next venture. I just found your channel and this video is something I really connected with. I am beginning my career change from Medical Biller to Data Analytics. I just completed a coursera class in SQL and a mini tutorial on Power BI, I have a 1 year daughter along with my girlfriend and her 7 year old daughter. I realize I need to find a career that has a future. While being a Medical Biller my boss would put me on excel projects since I was the most proficient at it. I became self taught on formulas and would take other excel formulas and see if I could understand and apply them my self. It felt natural and I grew to create tables and charts for her to present to our Owner. I applied for our Analyst position and found out really quickly I was out of my depths. The manager did like my attitude and gave me a list of courses to take. I appreciate this video as I know I have an understanding on what to do next. Sorry to the long replay and Thank you again.

Alex, just wanted to say thanks. I am in my mid 30's with a couple kids and wife to support. I started in Finance, did my CPA, did a bit of Financial Analysis, but then became a Finance Recruiter for the last 5 years. I am pivoting my career back into the Analysis side, and very scared. Your story was truly uplifting and put a smile on my face. I will take the next 3-6 month to take courses/certificates in SQL, Python, PowerBI/Tableau and build a portfolio along the way. I have a bit of SQL experience, and I agree that a good recruiter can truly help the transition. Thanks again....and Jalapenos!!!!!!!

Jalapeños for you Alex!!! While I was enrolled in a PhD in Biology I learnt a lot of R, Python, relational databases (ms access) and off course excel. I have to say I become obsessed with programming, the challenges were so much fun, I enjoyed a lot. However, I always thougth it was impossible to make a carreer in programming, data analyst because I assumed computer science people would always be chosen/employed over me, I mean, they have a whole university training in that! So I never persue that path... Difficult now to see it was possible... I wish there is still a way. Haven't done much in programming since 5 years... but still love it, that's why I ended up watching you here, last week have been looking for small programming task to warm up my brain again
