Yes, Yes, and YESSS!!! Tees, Texas Wedges, and those wedges are so important for me…. Great stuff Mark! It’s tips like these that have made my golf much more enjoyable over the years!

This is gold. I am very strong 90yds and in and 8-10d increments. I putt when available off the green and I’m a mid single digit HC. This video is one of the best I’ve seen. I think he should do a video on wedge distances.

As someone who is great with their wedges and putter off the green I agree with your statements. It varies depending on the shot but I do both. Nothing feels better than sinking a putt from 35ft off the green though.

What I find amusing is that I was at Al Hacienda the course your filming at last month. Your putt off the green hole, amusingly I actually putted OFF the green (into the Hazard!) as opposed to putting FROM off the green 😂 Also worth noting it was blowing a hoolie and horizontal rain! 🌧️ 😊

Great advice at the end of the “putting off the green” portion. Do what you do best. I never putt off the green, not because I’m trying to be a hero or think I’m a tour player. I have never been comfortable standing over a ball that I have to putt through fringe. I have tried to use putter off the green for a season because it’s logical. But for some reason, I’m so much more comfortable chipping and the results bore that out. So thank you for not saying “every amateur regardless of handicap or skill should putt it instead of chip it 100% of the time”. As always, balanced, well thought out advice from Mr. Crossfield 👍🏽

Exactly! I was blessed to have a mother who worked for PING for 19 years so my first irons were Eye2+ and I now have my dads old G10 irons but I still have my Eye2+ SW. My set was 3,5,7,9, SW so I learned how to play each club with a wide amount of shot distances which I feel most people miss out on when learning which will reflect in your chipping. I've never had an issue chipping, honestly before I hurt my shoulder when I was young I hit every club dead straight and my mom was amazed, I never really cared and stopped playing in my late teens. I'm 34 now started back up a couple years ago and am thankful I can still chip. My drive slices like no tomorrow, also played baseball so I feel like that negatively affected my swing. But for some reason when chipping I just look where I want the ball to go and it ends up pretty close. I think a lot of golfers are focusing on where they want the ball to end up on the green rather than where it should land on the green. Sorry for the ramble.

Same, I do it because I'm fucking abysmal with a putter off the fringe. Not because I think I'm good lol

for me, aside from if the grass is too long, the threshold for when I need to chip rather than putt is, am I going to need so much of a backswing with the putter that I’m likely to fat it.

I'll putt from the rough from about 3 feet and in. Anything more has me reaching for a wedge or iron. I simply don't trust my putter speed. Might start practicing this more to build some familiarity

@@timdench2583 Hi Tim, yes I have tried the hybrid actually. I find I have better distance control with the chipper. I use a Ping ChipR (37 degree loft), and just subbed out the nine iron for it. Full swing distance was near as makes no difference identical between the two. Thanks for the reply!

Doesn’t the chipper come into play for those 3 wedge shots. Time and a place for all 14 clubs. I have a mate that has 2 putters. One is driving putter. It’s the go to club from 100m and in as well as tricky lies in and around trees.

I will always putt rather than chip if I can (and I like to think I'm not too shabby at chipping) - I was always told to get the ball rolling on the ground as soon as you can. To me chipping brings in too many other variables: hitting it in the air, hitting it just the right distance in the air, and you'll put backspin on the ball so it might actually check and stop! Nicklaus (?) I think, used to say your worst putt will be the same as your best chip - so putt it if you can! I realise from watching this that I do have a wedge system, I look at my Sky Caddie for the distance and pick the wedge I know is that distance and just hit it.

Excellent points made Mark! I tend to be biased toward chipping unless conditions very clean, tight lie, and no obstacles, then out comes the Texas wedge.

solid video; but w/r/t the texas wedge, in some places there are rarely those sorts of mowed-down roughs like you have in the UK around the greens.

As for the putter off the green, it works great when you have a clean dry lie off the green. Like you get off om links courses. If its wet, or there is a fringe around the green it's much harder to judge.

@@MarkCrossfield I played Royal Liverpool some time ago. The green surrounds were almost as smooth as the greens. It was much easier to use a putter. The green contours made it imperative to land the ball in the right place if you chipped it. If you used a putter it was easier. The only time I used a wedge was if a bunker was in the way. I learned this from our pro. Now I use a putter whenever I can.

I can never judge the pace on putts from off the green. I could leave it short of the green or blow it past the hole. A chip is at least in the neighborhood. Probably need to practiced with the putter, but our greens are surrounded with rough. There will be possible putts from the front of the green possibly, but never around the other sides, so chipping is far more common.
@lawbinson
@lawbinson 3 месяца назад
Agree, if you are good at wedges there’s so much unpredictability when putting from far off the green that it’s really difficult. So, it’s more of a tip for those who aren’t good with wedges to minimize misses.

I feel like this was a waste of time. "Hit your best shot that you have control over"? I'm a decent golfer and played with many good golfers, if you aren't using a tee on a drive ... you are choosing an unnecessarily complicated shot. You don't have to tee it up 6", but to bring the ground into play is almost unforgivable. And, the putter is the #1 tool of most amateurs near a green. At some point, learn to chip ... because most people aren't playing $300/round courses with glass=like cuts 20 yards off of the green. The surface transitions alone make putting hazardous. But, yeah, if you can't lift the ball ... you don't have much choice (Hint, putt with your 7-iron, off of the green it will surprise you).
