This has been a video on my to-do list for quite some time and I thought it would make a nice, short tutorial video. Using markers to underpaint is a fun, and easy way to make detailed pages seem less daunting to complete. Today we're going to work with Tombow ABT waterbased markers and FC Polychromos pencils in Kerby Rosanes' 'Colormorphia." Enjoy!

Finally a different use for my tombows other than calligraphy. Although tombows can damage paper esp typical coloring books pages, i have to try this out!

If it’s the cheaper paper, like Amazon paper then they can be a bit rough. In the more adult geared books with better paper, they work pretty well. Just don’t go over the same area too many times and make sure the marker is dry before you start with the pencils. 🤗❤️

I do have hand problems. Using a base cuts pencil time significantly. I find it also helps you plot out a picture before spending that pencil time. I use inktense pencil as a base. It has pros and cons like everything else but it has never bled through on any paper I've tried it on.. it's blendable so you can combine colors to create more.. and you can do pastels by using a very light coverage of pigment (this is actually easier with a slightly dull pencil). It also never dries out or wears out a nib. Cons are you have to be really careful how wet you get it with some papers, I find best results with water marker blender (I've never gotten alcohol to work for me) or waterbrushes blotted carefully. It takes practice to avoid streaks but using a very light layer of one color, or two colors combined evenly, in a single space usually results in an even layer. Be sure you constantly wipe extra pigment off the brush/marker as needed. Be sure to let it dry completely before you pencil over the top so the paper can harden.

I just found your channel with this particular video, now over a year old! I just watched this demonstration of using markers under colored pencils on Feb 22, 2023. I was particularly drawn to your clip as you used the Kerby Rosanes published coloring books and the paper that is used by that publisher, along with Tombow dual brush markers and Polychromos pencils on top. I would like to see you try other combinations trying Kuretake Zig Clean Color brush pens, perhaps with Holbein colored pencils? Or, Caran d'Ache Pablo colored pencils? I would also like to hear your thoughts (obviously based on experience) on other popular coloring books artists and the different paper qualities that are used when published. Have you tried using the Faber-Castell Pitt brush markers filled with India ink? They say there is NO shadowing on the back side of the page when using these pens. I am realizing that success seems to be related to paper quality, hands down! I am just re-starting my adult coloring joy after an almost 14 year break taking care of my dying husband, then my dying mom. Between the ages of about 7 to about 49 I was able to color at least 3 times a week for an hour or so, but it wasn't "cool" back then in 1960's to 1990's in any way to many people around my sphere of friends. I have stopped worrying about what other people think that I should do, or be cool enough, for, for..... enough. I will be happy watching your channel and see what you learn and share. Thank you!

You can use clear gesso from winsor and newton on the coloring pages, but even better: Transparent Watercolor Ground by Daniel Smith, and then you can use the alcohol markers, i've seen a video where they test it and it seems to dry smooth so it dies not damage the nibs.

Yes I would definitely like to see you do this on a larger project. It seems like such a useful technique but I’d like to see it put into practice a few more times. I’m still not totally clear on how you get your nice highlights this way. It seems like if the marker is a darker mid tone type color then it would overpower the highlights when you try to put them in with a pencil. Thanks so much for sharing this example. Have a great day.
@QueenofFlannelColors
@QueenofFlannelColors 2 года назад
I will definitely be planning a bigger project using this technique. Typically when I do this, my marker is my highlight color, so I try and keep that as my lightest color. Just like I would if I was using pencils. It just requires a lot less blending. The dragon was just an extra example showing how you CAN use lighter colors over certain darker colors, but it’s not going to give you stark highlights. Thanks so much for the watch ❤️

@@heathers_colorpalooza8789 Occasionally if I’m doing a lot of foliage or leaves though and I want a yellow undertone, I’ll use a mid green marker and yellow pencil over top. I like the way it looks versus doing a base layer with yellow marker. Just depends on the look you want.

I’ve never used acrylic as a base for alcohol markers so I’m not sure how it would react. You’d want to water it down so you can still see the lines of your page. Maybe test it out on scrap paper or a page you’re not fond of and see how it goes. Thanks for the watch. 😀
@waymire01
@waymire01 2 года назад
You can go lighter, but you need opaque pencils. . Prismacolor white is the absolute best white but test whatever pencils you have on black paper first to see the coverage. Oil based pencils are known for being transparent and therefore will not cover as well light over dark.
@QueenofFlannelColors
@QueenofFlannelColors 2 года назад
I think it really just comes down to the look you're going for. I generally don't do stark white highlights, so if I'm working with lighter pencils over a darker marker, it's typically just to add interest. I mainly do it with foliage if I'm using this technique. Otherwise, I'll just use a light colored marker for my base and then my midtone and shadows I build up with pencil.

What about bleed thru with alcohol markers ? Do those pages in that book hold up to any bleed thru ?
@QueenofFlannelColors
@QueenofFlannelColors 2 года назад
This book is double sided and alcohol markers will bleed through. If you wanted to use alcohol markers, you’d have to treat the page or photo copy it onto your own paper. Kerby does have some single sided books though and I’ve used this technique in those, with alcohol markers, as well as in my Mythographic books. Mythographic books are single sided, but you’d want to put a backer sheet between the page you’re working on and the page behind it. Even paper that is specifically designed for alcohol markers, you’re more than likely going to get some kind of ghosting. Hope this helps and thank you for the watch. ❤️
