I compost my own poop. It's called humanure and I'd have thought it to be weird myself just a few years ago. Now I think it makes a lot of sense. For more information on how to, why, and safety as well as a link to a free version of The Humanure Handbook go to www.robingreenfield.org/humanure

technically the largest water consumption is from the agricultural industries specifically meat. and we all know how unsustainable these industries are. but seriously think about all the people that use good drinking water to flush poop and pee down the drain, and they wonder why we are in a drought...

It's called de-globalisation, whereby we stop mindlessly consuming things we don't need, giving money to rich elites who underpay workers far away, and pressuring a government to go to war to fight for oil to produce our luxuries... Globalisation is definitely not the way forward, it not only hurts humanity, but our planet too. de-globalisation simy consists in doing as you said: -taking a step back -coexisting with nature, not fighting or manipulating it -buying less -importing less -not buying throw away products -buying locally so that we can support local businesses and live in a a wealthy environment. one way to do this is to keep your nutrients for you, and to make 100% FREE FOOD out of it. bye

I've done it for some years now. It's really easy, and no smell, all after i read the same book. I pee in a gallon container, that goes on the compost pile. I've got a paper shredder and everything that is paper or cardboard gets shredded and is used for poo cover. Then when the container is full, on the pile it goes, then just shove a layer of leaves on top. All organic stuff from the kitchen goes on the pile as well. I don't tell anyone, but I haven't flushed for years. 😁

Ha! 😄 Me neither, haven't mentioned it-- people can be narrow-minded and judgemental. But hey-- when the water and sewer system hits a snag, we'll "be the only ones on our block" to not panic.

@@2Hearts3Yes, best not mention it or some busybody might go out of their way. But when you think about it, before the "flush toilet" where did manure go? Back on the land, where it belongs, the rivers and the sea are not where you want it.

I got to say that's not only humanure for me Since I started doing it, my physical, mental and spiritual health inproved a lot. I recovered from a very hard and difficult to cure disease. Because of this, I could start doing in my life and invent many new things that I could not before due to poor health and poor general condition. Beacause of this, I was able to start working a lot physically and intellectually. I also feel better spritually- happier and freer to do good and generally as me and I can also give this happiness to others. The very sad thing is that people do not want to see that the changes that have taken place are the results of working towards humanure.

Thank you! This is the first composting toilet video I've seen that actually explains the realities of composting human waste! Every van, RV, and skoolie that has one makes a video about how great their toilet is for the environment; but most don't realize it's not done composting when it comes out of the toilet. The result is humanure where it doesn't belong, since few nomads have a composting pile. Thanks again for explaining!

Thank you for this great, concise, and informative video. Glad to see that you're using leaves and dirt, using materials readily available. Many videos I've seen insist that straw is the only good cover. Not so! You're proving that leaves work. Great news for me, as I have tons of leaves here, and straw is hard to find here. Also, just from my experience here, dirt and leaves work well as cover in the toilet, too. Pine pellets are good, but again, sometimes not available. I think one key to success with this very worthwhile endeavour is to find the solution that works best for your particular circumstances. One expert says straw must be wet; another says straw must be dry. So-- "try, try, again," and find the solutions that work best for you. Thank you for this video. 🏆🙂👍

i'd love to start "humanuring" but I'm only 15 and my parents would be disgusted... I live in France, and there are still many "natural" toilets but it would be very hard to do in my home. I understand very well the various reasons we would do this, and it's obvious that within 100 years we will need to make "humanure" or we will run out of top soil across the globe. These videos are very inspiring but unfortunately it's not as simple to do when you live with your parents. I do grow some of my own vegetables and fruit though (like 99% of French people!) , but I feel like I'm not doing enough to help the world. keep up the videos, bye.

Hi Rob, Love the on point video to explain the basics. I want to use this system in Papua New Guinea. The village has 3000 residents and our concerns are the water table is only 3-5 metres down. We would look at a community style compost area with multiple bins and gardens. Should we line the ground with plastic and the walls or just use 4" of palm branches and leaves on the base. There's a timber mill next door and we have unlimited saw dust.

When I say that God with His grace can heal through nature and act through infinite number of things, even believers in God often knock on the head and telk me that I am mentally ill or something. And I've just been in bad condition but it keeps getting all the way better. Certainly there are many graces of God in action for matters which are missing in the world and about which people think that they are not working but work wonderfully. I hope that it will gradually change and people will be able to take advantage of the good that is contained in this matter and also be able to discover many other wonders so far hidden for humanity or old and forgotten or considered not working but works great. Cordial greetings and blessing for You everyone ❤

@Robin.Greenfield
@Robin.Greenfield 6 лет назад
You avoid ground water contamination by putting the compost pile in an area that wont flood. That would mean higher ground and not low dips. Any form of human poop control can cause ground water contamination, including septic and municipal systems. Composting human poop is extremely safe as long as it's done right. When you say you use hot composting in this process Rob, how long do you continue that process for? I know that with the Berkeley method, very good compost can be produced in as little as 18 days. Would this be acceptable with humanure or is it too short? Finally, is it simply the temperature that is the critical factor, if the pile reaches a sufficiently high temperature (say around 60C) would you then consider it safe enough?

@@mycabinlife1291 Yep, I have read similar ideas myself, hence looking for clarification. It does seem odd though that everyone is utterly unconcerned about pig, horse, cow, chicken and basically any other manure than human yet are very, very cautious about the latter. Is the stuff we produce really that different or is it just the normal reaction when we think in terms of human produced manure?
@mycabinlife1291
@mycabinlife1291 11 месяцев назад
@@georgemcnally4473 well if you think of what your basic farm animal eats it is much cleaner eating. We eat so much processed foods preservatives chemicals then you have medications on top of that for some people. I'm sure it's more than just the ick Factor because when you look at places that have had catastrophes I don't remember which country it was right now I'm drawing a blank that had major earthquakes and they had no sewer systems and people were dying from a think it was called cholera. I think it affected like 25% of the population if I'm remembering correctly. Thankfully today we have the internet and we can look some of the stuff up ahead of time. How do we compost in winter when it s 5C below 0 and mostly raining or snowing? Just mix it all up as is and the same way we would in summer? Any other risks?
@garyrock2356
@garyrock2356 2 года назад
The compost pile will stay hot even in winter, but put a plastic cover on it to keep in the heat, so long as you keep adding and don't let it dry out it will keep going.

How would you do this is a winter climate?
@Robin.Greenfield
@Robin.Greenfield 6 лет назад
You'd have to do things differently, as I am set up for a warmer climate. There are plenty of examples out there of people living very simply and largely off the land. Look up Mark Boyle who did this in the UK. I'd recommend his book "The Moneyless Man" and "The Moneyless Manifesto" if you are looking for tips. robgreenfield.tv/markboyle/

Is it possible to do this indoors? I'd love to learn more about this!

The Unicorn, have you learned how to not pay any taxes? I've learned how, and I can teach you if you're interested.

I do my own taxes, but thank you anyway, turdy troll.

Firstly, what do you mean by "do your own taxes"? In my view any kind of "tax" should not exist. Seconly, why are you calling me a "turdy troll"? Do you think there's something trollish about informing anyone of a way to stop letting the government commit the robbery they're always committing?

do you need a special permit for this? And what if you take medications, is that going to be harmful to the process?
@sourcecreator2222
@sourcecreator2222 4 года назад
Composting done at home does not require any permits. Only commercial/municipal composting would require permitting at some point I believe.

Many yrs ago we had a latrine an that smells so stick because I know why no things were added to kill the snell
@crpth1

Please, please, please DO NOT COMPARE a "latrine" to this. Although the function is the same (receive Human poo). That mistake as probably been the worst misconception that still to this day makes people, just like you. Erroneously evaluate the system! ;-) Cheers

I like to use a spray bottle and my hands/fingers. Just like as if I was in a shower. Then wash hands with biodegradeable soap afterwards. There are some plants/shrubs that produce soft, comfortable big leaves that are convenient for use as toilet paper. Google "Toilet paper plants" to find a list of plants that could grow in your backyard!

Once that high pile of poop compost piles up what do you do with it? Will you reuse it for your toilet or take it somewhere to be discarded?

Hi, I'm homeless right now and poop in a bucket. I've always wondered, what is the best way to deal with the waste product? 1) Bury it in a patch of dirt? 2) Throw it in the green bin? 3) Open the sewer hole with a metal rod and dump it down there? I do not have the space capacity for a compost box, what do I do?

Do you also pee in the toilet or does that ruin the compost?
@raphaelv8062
@raphaelv8062 8 лет назад
i read somewhere that urine was bad for human compost, because it can seep through, and infiltrate into water pockets. if you were carrying a virus, that water pocket would be contaminated for all the people who would drink it.. So i'm not sure what you must do with urine...
@Robin.Greenfield
@Robin.Greenfield 8 лет назад
+Gabby Pomales Yes you can pee in a compost toilet no problem. Some people do and some people don't depending on how you want to manage the system.

Do you fertilize food with this compost?
@sourcecreator2222
@sourcecreator2222 4 года назад
After a period of one year, thermophilically composted humanure is considered virtually completely free of all pathogens, even roundworm eggs ("Ascaria," which are the hardest pathogens to kill, and can only be killed quickly through thermophilic heat composting, such as seen in the video). After that point, It is completely safe, sanitary soil fertilizer and can be handled and added to food crops just like any compost.

Fruitymuncher u say we can use this because its safe does that mean human manure can be used on edible crops like root crops and above ground crops as well so a veggie garden ?
