How I converted a 1995 Dodge Caravan into a Camper Van

This summer I purchased a 1995 Dodge Caravan and converted it into a camper van. In this video I provide a pictoral representation of how I did it. Here are some important notes:
- My total cost of getting into "VanLife" (or "MiniVanLife" in my case) was $4050: $1800 for the van, $1500 for general maintenance, and $750 for the actual build.
- I took the most inexpensive and minimalist route to get into MiniVanLife. My van is by no means a good representation of some of the impressive vans you'll see in #VanLife and on the VanDwellers Reddit sub.
- Living in a minivan is not for everyone, and even I am splitting some time between living in my minivan and staying in cheap hotels when I need a more stable environment for a couple days.
- If you plan to buy a van and convert it into a camper van, I recommend you check numerous examples and figure out your best practices. I recommend nobody build a van exactly as I did, because my van build might only be suitable for my needs and there are things I did that were inefficient or less than optimal.

I'm actually flying out to Tucson, AZ to pick up my 2006 Caravan (cargo). Paid under $1,500 and has 67,452 miles on it. Gonna build a camper out of her! I'll have her home (2-3 days of driving and vacationing) this week and start the (inexpensive) build. Love this video!

You could've made the build significantly lighter. For only one person, you dont need stabilizers between the bed legs (not having them also allows for storage bins to slide in & out). I cut holes out of my bed platform, for weight-relief & ventilation. The wood floor and carpeting is also unessesary. My van just has a thin rubber mat over the corrugated metal...the bed legs work fine on it and i hardly notice walking on it. I've seen people hinge a fold-down table to the van wall, so you may be able to drop some weight there (i just use one of my surfboards spanned between the front seat and stacked bins as my table). Here's a good hack: use an old laundry detergent jug (kind w/ built-in spigot) as your dish washing, hand washing & tooth brushing water source (no need to buy a $15+ water dispenser jug).

I have a similar van. My mom drives it right now. It needs work. The sliding door won't open and close correctly. My dad got it closed so we won't open it again. The front doors won't close correctly either, but we have to use them. The back door/ lift wont stay open. We prop it open with a poor stick. Its horrible. (And slightly funny.) It also needs struts extremely bad. After hitting a bump in the road it is like a rollercoaster wave or something. I kinda love the old van. This video makes me wish I could build it to use for vanlife.
@ZachGood
@ZachGood 5 лет назад
haha most of the problems you've described are ones I've had as well. The sliding door was so finicky - sometimes it'd open, sometimes it wouldn't. There were mornings when I had to mess around with it for 5 minutes before it'd open up. Also, the back lift door refuses to open all the way. But those things only gave my van character.

My 1993 Van had the option of the two rear seats of both laying down flat, it's called " Con-Verta-bed . ". Made into a twin bed. I was just gifted this van. I'm looking for those seats. To be honest I was going to act sort of like a troll and slam your effort because your skill level and mine are not the same. If you are comfortable (as much as that is possible) living in soccer mom van then job well done, and....what the hell difference does my comment make anyway. People will lie to you or patronize you and say “good job” like your mom or first grade teacher. They admire your effort and idea, and not necessarily compliment you on your skills as a craftsman. If the sum and total of your life’s effort are rolled up and placed on 4 wheels and your vision is a life full of adventure then go for it. You are aware of your budget and will be okay. I am not going to say “Good Job” on your skills converting your minivan, but rather tell you “ Outstanding Job” in your decision to achieve a dream and do it within your means. I did it every June/July on a motorcycle towing a small trailer and am I am 70 years old. This year I am taking a Dodge Crane Caravan. While my transportation has changed, the dream has not. Live life..... it wasn’t meant to be wasted in some awful cubical making money for someone else.

Padding is not just for deadening sound, you need insulation is you are going to be sleeping in your van, condensation is a major problem.During cold nights, your breath will condensate on cold metal and you will end up with major mold issues eventually with no insulation or ventilation. Otherwise, good job.

Ah man, that's the worst. Buying old vans is such a gamble because there are so many potential trouble spots. Rough and ready but it does the job. I'm sorting out my finances so I can start the build next year. Then camp part time whilst I save some cash to travel in it full time. Figured I may as well go at my own pace and build it out whilst I'm saving. I love camping but I'm getting a bit old for a tent.lol.

🏆. Wonderfully well-planned and carried out transformation, Zach! Lots of creative ideas put into practice. And the results are both practical and very “ finished looking.” I can’t think of anything you failed to research or plan.carefully-and your fore-thought is obvious all the way along. Wishing you good weather, safe, pleasant travels and many Happy Trails in your fine little turtle shell camper! 👍

I hit the gas tank and didn’t find out until after I sold it. Oops! To keep your bed from molding you need air holes at least, otherwise you will have air it out a lot. If gets hot your Velcro will melt and drip. Reflectix will keep you warmer and cooler for your windows.

You did a good job for someone with no carpentry experience! . I might suggest using screws another time instead of so many expensive L brackets, tho'. Also, with no insulation between the hardboard on the walls or roof, you are going to suffocate in the summer and freeze in the winter, but you will find that out for yourself. Wherever you are, you can make some changes. And just so that you know, they will allow you to work in the parking lot of Lowes or Home Depot to make any adjustments. Good luck with everything. Enjoy the van life and keep us posted!

I'm so glad I saw this. My 1998 Windstar is perfect for converting a mini van to an RV, but I hadn't figured out how to do the floor. I'm laying down simulated hardwood in the back, but wasn't sure what to attach it to. My cabinet work is on the left only where there's no sliding door and I just use a memory foam block on the floor at bed time. I added a Rockpals 500w power supply, 1.25 cu. ft. freezerless fridge, and a 12 volt ceiling vent fan from Amazon. You'll want the vent fan.

@ZachGood
@ZachGood 11 месяцев назад
I’m not sure if the dealership is still active. It was called South Rail Auto Sales in North Charleston. A bit of a hole in the wall. I would strongly recommend against living in a van in SC between May and October. The heat and humidity would be dangerous. The months outside that should be okay though. For reference, the hottest night I spent in my van was 75-80 degrees and it was rough. Nights in the 40s-low 70s were really nice though. This is one of the reasons why so many homeless people go to California - it’s easy to live outside when the temperature is always between 50-70.

Probably the one I made - if I remember correct, it was something like 72-73 inches in length (so basically 6 feet). As for width, I'd guess there was about 84 inches, or 7 feet. Two people could easily sleep in the back - it's just a matter of how things were set up.

I love your idea, I want a van just for camping on vacation or just over night in a camp ground. One thing left out is a frig. can you help here on this subject. Once a year I go for a week on vacation or it could be good on a road trip also, it would save on getting ice for a cooler. If it would not make sense then I would understand if it was said, i also just thought of a house battery set up also. I want to use it for just a short get away to break the everyday life of just going to work and coming home.
@ZachGood
@ZachGood 4 года назад
I'd research and search for some RU-vid videos. Using a cooler is such a pain because the ice needs to keep being replaced and the temperatures in the different layers of ice can vary so much. On the other hand, a fridge option can be difficult when living off the grid. You should be able to find some fridge ideas and DIY tutorials here on RU-vid.

Great ideas 👍. I was wondering what do u do for A/C or heat with the solar power, while the car is off. I saw in another video, a flat n foldable solar panel n they put it on the roof of the car with duck tape; than connected to the car or electrical socked in the car.
@ZachGood
@ZachGood 2 года назад
I looked into those things but the work needed for them was well above my paygrade and not worth the investment considering my minimalistic approach. A solar setup might've been worth more than my entire van haha
